I give anyone some massive credit for growing a business like this. HOWEVER, these people were "insiders". Started by an early ebay executive, doubleclick founder, and a louis vutton executive.

Still an impressive feat...but I'm just more impressed by some dude in his basement with no contacts, who just starts a business that does $5M/year.

In the real world, most people are not that 1 and it's not a decision. Go do some research on these people, they were obviously very talented, Harvard educated, and lucky. Maybe if they were educated by WSO's they would have made 240,523,023.43 in 38 days though? Who knows?

We are missing the point here, and I repeat this time and time again with my coaching clients...

THESE GUYS HAD AN IDEA THAT WAS DIFFERENT

Yep ,they did something different or 'disruptive'

Were they the first to do it, heck no. I've consulted for a company that has been doing it since 2005, however they took it to a totally new level by making is luxury and thus much higher priced. That is what made them different.

That is why selling the $20 ebook that can be found elsewhere is not going to cut it. Ask any of the richer Internet Marketers, they have all had a higher priced product - 'The luxury good'.

Notice also, she says in the video they did not get many calls. They did not have to waste time handling customer service, they got on with expanding as the customers took care of themselves (we of course all outsurce to the same effect)

Im working with two guys now that have something so different to bring to the IM market... that is what will set you apart and make you real money...

Thanks. Interesting post. For context, the site is: gilt.com. They have an awesome traffic rank too. So $107M doesn't surprise me.

Good stuff. I'm a subscriber of Inc. magazine and they run a lot of articles like that. For example, PopCap games is said to be on track to do $100M this year. : )

Sorry dude, with all due respect i dont agree. At all.

Yes its great to bE different, to be unique, in fact my business model is very freekin unique also, but you dont have to be, and i certainly dont think these chicks where either. they used classic marketing 'tell a friend and you get 25 bucks off' i think the key i got, was that they actually took action and got excited when they first got sales hence the momentum.

The big key for me was when they said they got shown on 'the view' PR people

Being different is great, but the wheel does not need to be re-invented, just grown

another big difference is: they can offer $25 discount until they got viral. many companies can not go that far because of less money back them in the first place.

No... in the real world there are a bunch of well educated
people who possess varying degrees of talent and luck who will
never enjoy any significant level of success at anything.

In the real world the people who enjoy the kind of success
these women created are those who decide to do so.

They decide to acquire the skills necessary to succeed at
whatever level they desire then they apply those skills on a
consistent daily basis. They decide to persist until they achieve
whatever goals they set for themselves.

People succeed, or don't, based on the decisions they make
and the degree of desire and persistence they apply.

Luck has very little to do with success... in the real world.

Sorry, but I'll have to respectfully disagree with that one.

If it were true, then every hard working, well educated, smart person would be in the news having their runaway success story published.

There's a reason you don't see many of these stories on a regular basis... because they're not something that just happens because someone wanted it to happen and worked hard at it.

To a degree, a great plan and hard work will bring rewards and results, sure. But I have to say, only to a point.

Just because you work hard and set smart goals, doesn't mean you'll achieve them.

I think this thread and stories like it are an inspiration, but not necessarily a representation of typical results.

If they were typical results of working hard, being smart and having a great marketing strategy, I can assure you more people would be in their shoes too.

Which ultimately means, if you can't guarantee typical/certain results, then another element has to come into play.

            That element is luck.

Ask any business owner, they're going to tell you, luck is part of business.

You missed the part about acquiring the right skills.

Working hard at strategies that produce mediocre results
will only result in mediocrity. The old saw that practice makes
perfect is incorrect... only perfect practice makes perfect.
Practicing the wrong skills will not get you to the promised land
no matter how hard you work.

I am a business owner... and a successful one at that. Luck had
nothing to do with any of it. I know many others like me... not a single
one of them believes in luck. Those who put it off to luck are doing
nothing more than creating an excuse for mediocre results in advance.

You are free to disagree until the end of time... personally, I'll
just keep doing the things that produce the type of results I want
while others work hard at the wrong things and hope for luck to
              change their fate.

They CAN be, if you do it right.

Unfortunately, because of the low overhead/nearly inexistent barriers to entry, there is ALOT of competition out there. What do you REALLY need to be successful besides a somewhat professional looking graphic, and an eJunkie account? With WSO's you don't even need your own website nowadays...

The part that can make you ALOT of money with eBooks is to develop a course or system around many of them.....price it right...and market it right....

On top of that, you have to literally work hard at developing profound social proof to give the product legs to stand on. You could write the Bible, but noone will read it if you don't have others review and submit testimonials about it.

Actually, promoting $20 e-books is a terrific place to start....
IF it is the beginning of your lead collection blueprint
IF is is the first part of your marketing funnel
IF you are starting out and you want to build a reputation, credibility, and trust, and
IF it is an e-book that contains a lot of pertinent, quality information and is not some rehashed dreck

There are probably some more good caveats, but you get the idea. Well.....my idea, at any rate.

No, that's why you create and sell your own $20 ebooks... Writing short reports is fast and easy. No filler, just pure useful information.

If you do it right it can produce a huge business and the great thing is there's no overhead and the cost of entry is extremely low.

$100,000,000 is a huge amount of money but considering you do not have any risk even $100,000 a year is a great income. Which means you only have to sell 13 copies per day.

I'm sure just about anyone, given the right advice, can find 13 people per day to buy their reports for $20 bucks, somewhere in the world.

And of course you setup your backend $297 course to sell to those who just purchased your reports.

The $25 was a credit against your future purchase ... which is your bonus for referring a friend.

They made a profit on your purchase ... because they were selling items that were more expensive.

Yes their viral aspect was a marketing plan ... that worked very well.

We can learn from it, by scaling it down for the offers that we wish to make.

They went from 0-business in November, 2009 ... generate over $100 million in 2010.

What a huge success ... you only need to do 1/4 of 1%, to do over $250,000 a year in business.

The lesson is ... find something that you like in Internet marketing ... and take action

Hogwash. You're right, not everyone can replicate them for one reason or another, but it's not because these two fell into it.....they didn't fall into anything.

No, actually i think you are wrong.

I think what you are reffering to is some sort of mystical power that only helps certain individuals, this is bull.

No one is any more special then another we are all blessed with the very same thing: Freedom over our own thoughts.

Thats the only thing almost every single human being on Earth is given at birth which every other human being also has.

I think your belief is limited and with that kind of thinking you wont be getting anywhere fast.

No one person is luckier then any other. In fact if you told most successful people they where lucky, they would probably politely tell you to walk off a cliff. I know i certainly i would.

So do yourself a favour and BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

Unfortunately this is true. Luck plays into everything we do, I guess the way I look at is that its better to have tried and failed, then to not have tried and be left wondering.

Who cares how "talented" and educated they are.

    They took action.

90% of the people here don't. They talk about it a lot but when push comes to shove buying another wso because the title said they'd get rich without trying was the easiest route to take. Once it's accepted that making money online or offline takes a ton of work and patience, people start seeing results.

      Lucky my ass.

These two women worked day and night on their business. Did you hear how they set up a launch? That takes a lot of work.

Write it off as luck all you want, but all it is, is an excuse you are making for yourself as to why they are successful and you are not (as).

They took action, they had a game plan, a unique idea, and they went after it. Luck, while im sure there was some of that, had little to do with their success.

    It is luck.

You can take all the action in the world, and sometimes, YOU JUST WONT WIN.

    Life is not a movie.

Stories like this are the exception, not the rule nor a deviation from the norm. These things almost never happen. Most of the time the good guy loses, or has a small moderate amount of success. It takes things really going in your favor to become that wealthy (9 figures plus).

Who here really envisions $100,000,000 years? I don't. Keep it in perspective and understand that if you can just do a small fraction of what these ladies did, you'll be extremely well off!

Would you turn your back on 1% of their success ($1,000,000/year)?

Amen to that, John! The key of this exercise is to stretch the psychological limitations that we've placed on ourselves, it doesn't mean we have to duplicate exactly what these ladies did to be a success.

This is really all about pushing us past the arbitrary limits and restraints we place on ourselves, and this is why we want to be in the company of greatness and not mediocrity.

Motivation is the key in IM. Most of newbies try to copy a person who earns much with IM. They only see the profit and way of doing IM. But they don't think about the effort of that expert.
We don't need to earn millions of dollars. First make a little amount and SCALE it

  • Greetings Blpg8491,

Thank you for your post, and I agree with you.

The goal is to start making profits, and then scale them up to create an income that allows the person to be able to make a decision, if they should continue with their day job?

One of the things, that very commonly slows us down ... is that we tried to many things all at once and then nothing really gets completed.

It is my opinion this is where we are trying to do.

    1 ... Imagine

    2 ... Believe

    3 ... Achieve

By concentrating on only one way to do Internet marketing ... and take action.

Your success is not guaranteed ... but it is very likely that you will find it.

I am reminded of an old story that is told in our family ................

If you cannot see your destination, always travel as far as you possibly can ... then you may see the answer to seeing your goal ... or find the actual
    destination itself.

To all the haters - actually putting in the time to make something "viral" by nature is golden. And while it won't work all the time, when it does, the bank'll be yellin may day, cause every days a payday. (+1 to anyone who can name the rapper lol)

I've studied tons of very successful sites that have "social" aspects, and if the site allows people to interact in a way that takes off (the very design is what makes or breaks this), these sites go from 100 visitors to thousands after thousands within months.

    I doubt that's "luck"

I feel confident that deep pockets and a huge network of The Connected had just as much to do with their success as being smart, motivation, taking action, positive thinking, yadda yadda yadda.

You can have a shipload of the latter but just a little of the former will take you farther.

But as the end of the year approaches, there certainly does seem to be a lot of PR buzz around this company, including a new $15 million in financing and a warehouse in Louisville and an expansion to Tokyo.

Which looks to me like a frantic, last-ditch effort at shoring up a weak bottom line. And by Gilt Groupe standards, "weak" still looks pretty damn strong to most small business owners, but percentagewise?

Gilt Groupe has done the rough equivalent of running a $20 Warrior Classified and selling a single copy of a $47 product.

    Just a bit of perspective.

This is very far removed from typical internet marketing as we know it, as this venture has been heavily financed (Caliban points this out in his research above), and with a fairly large company like this that sells physical products, the revenue figures are far higher than the actual net profit!

With the overhead and the much lower profit margins associated with physical products, you can be sure that the actual net earnings will be much lower, and with this company still pretty much in the start-up phase, you can also be certain that the salaries/earnings of the two founders aren't anything worth bragging about. In many cases, the founders of start-ups pay themselves very little as they want all liquid money reinvested in the business during this critical phase!

It requires lots of hard work and massive investor funds to take a venture like this public, and even then you don't know if it's going to be a success or not. The gross revenue figures quoted in this report mean nothing, because what matters at the end of the day is net earnings!

Adding to CDarlock's comments, those two pretty ladies are really just a front for the company. The puppet master and major shareholder is the founder of Doubleclick. Those two pretty blondes are really just employees of a large corporate entity and are just being used for good PR for a high end fashion firm.

I do not believe the founder of DoubleClick has provided much more than funding and connections to the company. The idea and its execution, as far as I can tell, have still come almost entirely from the two young women that serve as the company's public face.

I think those two women lack the real-world experience necessary to see that their revenue projections are not based in reality. As a project manager, my impression is that their burn rate is higher than projected, but they're unwilling to admit it... so they keep staving off investors and acquiring new ones by promising massive growth and huge returns that are simply never going to materialise.

Case in point, they made just over $20 million in 2008, just over $100 million in 2009, and they're projecting over $500 million in 2010. They drew a straight line instead of a curve. They should have projected (i.e. I would have projected) $250 million in 2010.

Watch for their year-end results. I'm confident they'll be closer to my projection than their own, and I know next to nothing about the operational details of Gilt Groupe. But I know big business, and I know mass markets, and I know growth patterns.
