Is there any downside to publishing the same article to a directory & on your blog at the same time

I'm kind of new so I really don't understand SEO well. Can there be some kind of penalty when you write an article and then publish it both to an article directory and your blog? Thanks in advance for the help.

You'll definitely get different opinions on this, but that's exactly what I do i.e. publish to Blog & eZinearticles at the same time. However, because it talkes eza a few days to approve my articles, that means in practice, the post ends up on my blog 1st - which is exactly what I want.
