Thanks for the tip, I will give it a go on sites I have which haven't reached the top spot (yet!)

Even if this produces a 5-10% increase in traffic, in theory it should produce 5-10% extra income from my sites where it is applicable.

Thanks, I have McAfee SiteAdvisor installed and I'm very suspicious of sites that don't show this green mark. I rather don't click on them because you never know what junk will enter my pc.

Also, your website title and description is of huge importance as well. It should grab your prospects attention.

This is a great tip – and there are other similar things like this as well!

WOT, for example, is a Firefox add-on I use to judge the trustworthiness of a site – see here for an example: http://www.makeuseof.com/images/wot-google-search.png . Green circles mean the community has rated you as trustworthy, and it makes me a lot more likely to visit a site – I would never visit a site with a red circle – so if you get a couple of friends to add the WOT add-on and rate your site as safe and trustworthy, you can get even more searchers to trust you!

McAfee does a similar rating. You can check if your website is rated safe here:

McAfee SiteAdvisor Software

If you get the green you do not have to do anything. That is the way it will show up for the McAfee surfers. If your website is flagged as red you can apply to dispute it.

McAfee useres have the choice to turn on/off the ratings advisor for their surfing.

It may take a while to get rated - this is what the Norton site says:

"If your site is currently untested by Norton Safe Web a gray icon appears on the site report page. To submit your site for rating:

Sign in to your Norton Safe Web account.
On the Site Dispute page, click "Rate my site" next to the site name. Note that the initial evaluation process takes about two weeks to complete."
