.com + .net + .org domain names?

Do you find its worth it to buy the .com/.net/.org version of your domain name or not really? Seems like it would be a good idea, but it also could be very unnecessary

I purchase the .com & .net when I am able too .. I leave .org alone as it is meant for non-profit orgs...

Several products I have produced and put up as WSO I have got the .com and .net - If you want to protect your product name it is important..

It's all relative to how big you're going with that particular site. If you're going to invest a lot of time and money into developing, promoting and branding your site, by all means, register all the popular extensions. But if you're setting up a quick adsense website or other 'disposable' site, no need.

I agree with Gene. if you are going to make that site a long-term business for you, then I suggest that you buy all the extensions.

I only buy all if the domain is really good or it has the potential to give more traffic.

I like to stick with .com and leave the rest alone. I do try to buy multiple versions of my .com, I look for common misspellings, '-' and using slang.

Here is an example of multiple .com's I have all selling the same product and each ending in a .com. TrafficDominateTricks, TrafficDominaTrix and I recently purchased TrafficDominaTricks.

If it's a business name, or the name of a potentially important and long term website, I'll buy the .com as the top priority and will usually buy the .net and .co.uk (as I live in the UK). I have on rare occasions also purchased the .biz too, if I feel it appropriate.

      Regards,
      Jeff.

It depend on what domain I purchased. If the domain name content good keywords in it and also for branding, I will register other domain extensions beside .com.

LOL! Seeing these domain names makes me picture a crossing guard in leather with a whip...

If it's a directory, I only buy .com or .net. If it's a site with good budget, I buy all three (and sometimes country specific TLDs). I prefer to use .com as the main site though.

While on the topic, I'm actually about to buy some domains right now.

I found some really specific, keyword rich domains for an upcoming project but I'm not sure about which ones to grab.

    Which is better ..

    I hyphenated .com ex. internet-marketing-tips.com
(if trying to get indexed under the term "internet marketing tips"

    OR ..

    internetmarketingtips.net
    internetmarketingtips.tv

I'm obviously new to IM so that's just an example.
It's actually going to be a video site so perhaps the .tv extension would be best? ..

    I'm not really sure ..

    Thanks in advance

I have a great domain (My opinion) , I purchased only .NET because the .COM is already taken
    I don't like .ORG.

When I am going to put serious work into a site, I go for all the extensions you mentioned, including .info.

I purchase .com's because .com is king. Even elder people that are just introduced to the internet are familiar with the name .com.

If you are going for the branding, then you should go ahead and buy the .nets and .biz.

What if you cant get the .com (because its likes 1,500pounds at the moment!) but are making a site that will potentially grow big?

Do you just go with the .net until you can afford to get the .com or come up with a different name? (I am stuck at finding a better name for my product!).

Thanks - hope you dont mind me jumping on this question

I would still go with a .com, even if you have to add an extra word to it. When you get to a point where you can afford the name you want, buy it and redirect the old domain to it. A .NET will always leak a significant amount of traffic to the .com version.

Try going to http://www.domaintools.com and click on the "suggestions" tab. That should help you come up with a decent domain.

Com is best, but Net is not too much of a bad deal. Think of Virgin.net

If you must have the .com and it is already taken then you will need to think of a variation of the name and buy the .com for that. If you try to buy the .com once you have a successful business built around it, (and the seller knows you have such a business) then if it's for sale at £1,500 now, expect to pay one hundred times that price.

          Just my thoughts.

          Regards,
          Jeff Henshaw.

Ok, thanks for the advice - I will try to add a word for the moment..and definitely get the one I desperately want when I have reached that amount of money - I am very confident in my product!

Not disputing that at all Gene. I however, always type virgin.net. Probably because one of my primary email addresses is @virgin.net so I'm probably pre-conditioned!
