google's new reading level feature - you really need to take notice of this

site:warriorforum.com - Google Search

This is a link to with the reading feature enabled on google. For the warrior forums it's break down is:-
74% basic
24% intermediate
1% advanced

Why should you take notice of this? Well it's because this is proof that google are able to work out how good the quality of your content is.

Think about it, automated text spinning is something Google can't really combat, unless they are able to work out how languages work, and this shows you they have - been able to classify English writing as basic intermediate of advanced, they are showing you they know how to, and marking pages on it.

To me (IMO...) this is google telling us that content must be good if you want decent results in the rankings.

What do you guys think?

The Flesch-Kincaid Reading grade level has been around since 1975. It is integrated into copies of Microsoft Word too. This is not ground-breaking technology. It's a very simple equation and it would be hard to imagine it having any serious effect on anything.

It's a simple formula based on number of words compared to number of sentences and the number of syllables compared to the number of words.

The Readablilty or Reading Ease formula is almost a direct inverse.

So you can use lots of long sentences and big 'high dollar' words and get marked as "advanced" or write simply and get more readers.

This reminds me of the scene in Blazing Saddles where Taggart tells Hedley Lamarr ".... you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore. "

It's an interesting piece of technology and well worth noting. Considering the fact that Google has a way to filter content based on date, site type (blog) and whether something is considered news - it makes sense that they would continue adding criteria.

Google is all about organizing information. If they can determine a way to separate the wheat from the chaff they will do so; we should pay attention to what they're doing.

They are trying to bring targeted results to their users - isn't that the game we're all playing here?

Anyway, I'm happy with my site so far - currently there is a higher % of intermediate articles than basic, but I still haven't gotten into advanced stuff apparently

just going off google's history, they never seem to leave a "feature" alone that they push into the mainstream, they keep improving it.

While at the moment it just might be something simple, i can see them improving on it and improving it. If this is what they have just released as a stable public feature, i'm quite sure they have more advanced versions already in the "lab".

Also you have to remember that google is a search engine, they are continuously working on improving their results. To google i'm quite sure that webmasters linkturfing (made up word of the day) via creating dozens of pages across the web using spun content is a problem they would want fixed.

When i go about things as a webmaster, i always think WWGD (what would google do).

This seems to me a step in a new direction for quality results. This just might be the basis of a "caffine" or "may day" update in a year.

Just raising these points as food for though more then anything. Ultimately quality content (both on your sites and external marketing effort) will product desired results.

.. it never ceases to baffle me how arrogant some of us tend to get, (or try to portray ourselves as -- why? iono!), when it comes to a behemoth like Google... who, (for the newbies not yet grasping what I'm saying), is a multi-billion dollar publicly traded conglomerate who's shareholders have enough clout to "continue" to easily recruit some of the most advanced minds (through their alumni network) from schools such as M.I.T....

...all I know is, "I" would never attempt to "out-smart" them OR minimize any change they push out and I've been told I'm kinda shmot... but, hey... maybe I'm not as shmot as some

Most folks out there do not have the brains of Einstein. With more and more people going online, Basic and Intermediate probably is the most suitable option to appeal to the greater number of people.
