OTO Placement - Before Sale Or After?

OK, those experienced with OTOs, where is the optimal placement? Is it before the sale or after a successfully completed sale?

You'd place it after the sale.

Having it before the sale would interrupt the sales process and you risk losing sales. If you show it after the sale you have nothing to lose.

To present it to non-buyers you could also add the offer as exit-popup.

I'll usually use a oto with a lowered price of the same product on my list about 2 weeks after they've visited the site. This serves to snag those that backed out of a sale because of price, or didn't have the money at the time.

If you insert an OTO before the sale process is complete, it's called an upsell - would you like fries with that? - but that can also be effective if it's relevant to the initial order. First time I saw it explained was a few years back, Yanik mentioned that it increased his total orders by something like 40% or so.

Does anybody have specific figures on how much an OTO boosts sales?

I tested an OTO after payment, before the download page
and the results were fantastic. 65% conversion.

I like this info... it makes sense, you already have a tested buyer, so they are much more likely to pay you again... after the initial sale...

I have been proven this personally, time after time, when I release a new version of my software, the original buyers are the ones who will purchase your new versions first.

I'm thinking about shifting my OTO after the registration process. So far have had low OTO's with it at the beginning.

Yes, I would think that the OTO before the checkout would inhibit sales. I guess the "after glow" right after purchase is the optimal spot. Any more opinions?

Does anyone know of any plugins that make it possible to do a true "OTO" offer?

Just from reading the replies, I have figured out what an "OTO" is, but can you tell me what it stands for?

    One Time Offer

And they would "normally" kick in after a sale.

There are options available for viewing OTO's before your sales pitch too.
