How'd You Make Your First $100 Online?

I'll start it out. Mine came from affiliate marketing. I drove traffic to an affiliate page through Craigslist, Safelist, forums, and free traffic exchanges. Not sure which ones got the most converts out of it. But that's how I went about doing mine.

what's your story?

Affiliate Marketing did it for me too. I set up a site promoting a product that helped people drive traffic to their sites. Boy did it feel good to see those little bars grow in the daily sales snapshot in CB. Fun times.

I my first digital dollars back in 2006 with site flipping.

I took a keyword targeted .com domain name, put a nice design from oswd.org around it and grabbed 100 articles from eZineArticles.com and slapped Adsense on there.

After that I wrote 10 unique bum marketing style articles and submitted them to eZineArticles.com myself and then after a month I was getting decent traffic from the articles and I had made $12.43 in Adsense on the site, so I listed the site for sale on another popular webmaster forum and made $200 on it.

Now remember, this was way before site flipping was a household term in the IM community and starter sites where fetching a lot more. Also it was a lot easier to rank for decent keywords back then. Nowadays this way of making money would still work, but you've got to do a lot more to get decent traffic to a new site.

Before you ask, I learned how to do all of that from an eBook I had purchased from the same forum. Up until that point I was on the info product buying hamster wheel with all the other newbies. I know I had at least 10 GB of eBooks and PLR stuff, and about $20,000 of guru courses in my closet paid for with credit card companies money.

I just sat down one day and said, "Ok, the next product I buy, I'm just going to do what it says until I make money, and if I don't make money after 90 days I'll quit this whole internet thing."

Lo and behold, taking action on the information was the key...

Taking action on good information ended up paying off for me and I never gave up, even in the face of all my friends and family telling me that I was being scammed and internet marketing was all a big lie.

I think the reason behind that first success was that I was committed to one business model for long enough to see results. Most people would have jumped to another method before the 30 days were over, but I was dead-set on following what the ebook author told me to do, and it worked.

Now I'm doing great and working from home full time, but it all started with that first $200 Paypal cash. I remember that excitement like it was yesterday

I was just about to say I made my first $100 online from web-hosting in 2003, but then I remembered that wasn't the case: it was actually before then, many years ago - probably around 2001 - from Amazon Associates, with a few referred sales of the DarkBASIC game programming "language".

I guess I've been an affiliate for longer than I thought!

My first $100 online actually came from selling local advertisements for an entertainment site I started showcasing video's and pictures of community events. I remember making that first sale and was shocked I had pulled it off.

When I started more seriously in IM my first $100 came from affiliate marketing. My outlook on how to run an online business completely changed once I discovered I could market a product and not have to deal with shipping, customer service, or RETURNS!

My first $100 came a few years ago after being fed up because I had spent a TON of money on make money programs and didn't find anything I thought I could handle.

I ended up creating a free Blogger blog, made a few posts promoting a program that was actually pretty good, and then put up a few YouTube videos with a link back to my blog. Yep, even with my ugly mug, people went to the blog and I made a few sales over time. It wasn't fast by any means, because I made a lot of mistakes ... but it worked and I was hooked.

I also made a DVD showing how to make some craft stuff and sold them through another blogger blog using youtube to promote. It worked pretty decent, but not super great.

I then moved on to Ebay to help start paying off the debt I stupidly put myself into. It was ok, but started to suck ... I basically only made money when I spent lots of hours buying and selling. (Trading hours for dollars)

I've since moved on to other things to really help get out of debt sooner. I now have a few sites I'm building up with authority and doing well with more passive sales from several affiliate networks.

But it all started with Clickbank products promoted with videos and a simple blog I set up focused on that one product. Keep it simple!

What do you mean by this?

That the products you promote are available to buy exclusively through Amazon, and nowhere else?

How do you go about ensuring this (or rather, how do you go about locating those products), because surely most products on Amazon are sold elsewhere too, what with Amazon being only one of many online retailers?

making money for me online started out the wrong way. an associate taught me how to do incentive marketing with CPA offers on non-incentive offers. at first i didn't know it was bad, but once i did i kept going anyway. the money was addictive. eventually about 5 months later one of the networks caught on and then i quit.

after that i tried a variety of legit ways to drive traffic to my cpa offers, and clickbank offers. made a few hundred bucks but nothing to write home about.

this year i started looking into different ways to make money selling services. i started making real money selling facebook fans, but with all the facebook issues and various BS that came with it, i got out of it. i made some really good money there for about a month selling my business plan and facebook suppliers, but eventually i got out of the game all together.

this year i also started studying seo. i've learned quite a bit in that time but i can honestly say i'm still no expert, but i know enough to rank the sites i take on pretty well. it's been harder to sell seo services for me than facebook fans, but i've found once the client signs on and sees results they are loyal, and tend to tell their friends. so while i'm not growing at a rate i might like to, i am growing.

i'm now hooked. the software i use for seo i have learned through extensive study and testing how to use the RIGHT way to help a site's ranks. i must say i am a software junky. some of the time i spend is researching software i don't have, and testing software i had to have. overall i'm in a good place, and leaps and bounds ahead of where i started, cheating cpa networks. by the way, i wouldn't reccomend doing any black hat with cpa networks. i personally got threatened with legal action and ended up paying back a network over 2k dollars from my stupidity.

    happy holidays

Bought 12 computer books at "Ocean State Job Lot" (a local store in Rhode Island ) for $7.00 each and sold them on eBay for $29-$39 each. Went back and bought about 300 more from 5 different stores and made about 5 grand profit within a few weeks.

From that I became an eBay seller (Close to $900k sold) and helped thousands of other people make money on eBay.

Even started a site to help people sell more on eBay called AuctionTNT

From small beginnings large trees grow :-)

Just from adsense. However, recently branched out to do some affiliate marketing on a product a friend build and I've made a few sales but adsense was it. Now I'm building 5 other niche websites for adsense and referral revenue on one. I haven't nailed how to sell other products yet but may give it a try. I like the adsense so far.

Wow, you just had to make this thread.

It had to have been 1999-2000 that I made my first $100 via an adult affiliate program. I can still remember excitedly checking my "stats" to see over $100 in one day. I was like all excited, haha.

I believe I used a program called Net Objects Fusion.. No, wait, it was Metal something? I can't remember. Edit, I found it. Hot Metal Pro 6.0!

Hosting back then was a bitch, and so was domain buying. I was completely clueless. I think I stuck a page up on a free host and got some targeted traffic too it.

I WISH SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TOLD ME TO BUY DOMAINS! Need to find the next big thing.

The good ol Bum marketing method.

Clickbank was my first affiliate network I got started off with, big surprise there. And I mostly used article marketing for my traffic and backlinks. EzineArticles and UsFreeAds to be more specific.

I created a simple landing page for the my CB offer, which was in the "run your car on water" niche, then wrote my articles with links going to my LP.

My landing page converted insanely well, even though it looked like a 13 year old could make it. I had made several thousand that summer just from that simple landing page, even though I was brand new to internet marketing.

I just had gotten lucky by choosing the right affiliate offer to promote and at the right time. This was during the period when gas prices were sky high.

What I learned, the design and your presentation isn't nearly as important as your offer and getting the right traffic.

Just promote an offer that solves a problem to a targeted audience and the sales will surely follow.

    good luck!

Mine came from creating an original product, and then marketing free tips related to those products on YouTube, and eventually building an authority site on that subject. People would see the free tips on youtube, and be encouraged to leave youtube to view a specific page on the site to see even more site-exclusive tips on that exact topic. Advertising for the product would be found somewhere on the page, but wasn't the purpose of the page.

For me ebay...I was inspired by my wife's sister, who knew nothing about marketing or all the internet marketing lingo and communities. Her 1st month she did over $1,000 selling used baseball bats and kitchen items.

I was kind of upset because here I am, the expert marketer, reading all these "make money online" materials, making peanuts and she wasn't even a newbie (she was probably pre-newbie..lol), making over 1K her 1st month on ebay!

So, I went "back into the lab" and started marketing different products on ebay, until I had $250 plus days and even netting over $1,200 in 1 day from ebay!

      I showed her ;/

Oh boy! Back in 05... Was a bricks and mortar shop, and my associates in other states wondered about my success. After getting enough "how are you selling so much, so fast" questions, I finally signed up for a free teleseminar service, ran a teleseminar, and for 3 hours straight answered about 100 of these people's questions!

After the teleseminar was over, I was hammered with emails from people who missed the training. "I'll pay you money for the recording!" Thus an idea was born... Hey! I can charge money for this!

One massively ugly website later, I was raking in sales from those who wanted the replay.

My first money online was actually from spammy little blogs in the "adult entertainment" niche, but most of my money has come from frelance WordPress development.

Did you ever notice that “author” is the root of the word “authority“?

I remember those good old days, lol! Actually, I feel this is a blessing in disguise, because in order to use Adwords effectively and profitably now, you really need to send your visitors to a squeeze page, and we all know how profitable long-term listbuilding can be (if done right!)

From selling my own ebooks. Only last year I started selling also articles (full rights), but I cannot find enough time to do both.

If I only wanted to make money online I would only sell articles because this is easier than maintaining and promoting a business. However, my intention was not to ‘make money’, but to finally publish my books and help the public with this knowledge.

This is why the way I started working online was totally wrong. I had no idea about internet marketing, I spent a lot of money building my sites; I made many mistakes. In the beginning it seemed as if I was working online basically in order to spend money.

    Now I've learned my lessons.

I advise all newbies to study very, very well internet marketing before building their own business. Making your first $100 is not such a big deal. What is really important is to keep making money in a regular basis.

Now that I know how everything works online I understand how naïve I was for believing that I would easily sell my ebooks only because they are valuable. The competition we face online is more than disappointing. I even wonder how I could start selling my ebooks (a few of them) from the beginning without any organization…
