How do you prefer to install wordpress on your site?

I just upload it through FTP, but my preference is to not install it at all.

I think install through cpanel & fantastico is a simple as it gets. I don't know why anyone would want to do it another way.

I use fantastico, don't see the point of making things harder for myself though some swear by uploading it themselves.

There are other more complicated ways of doing it, but why go the complicated route when you can use Fantastico and do it the simple way. I always use Fantastico!

You should do whatever is easier for you. I upload through ftp, and edit my own config file. Ive always been a more hands on type of guy. I also do some minor programming so this way is just easier for me.

I install wordpress through fantastico and have never had any problems with that. This is IM world, you will hear different people say different things at different occasions, some maybe true while others untrue.
Just stay focused or you'll loose it all.

I have a folder on my computer that has all the plugin and theme files in the wp-content folder. I find it much easier to upload that and install.

And multisite is my new favorite friend.

I like to use Fantastico myself, actually that is the only way i was taught how to install it and it seems really easy.

I learned how to install it so it is safer from potential hackers. I learned from a course by Leslie B (Bogaerts) on this forum.

  it was Cute FTP and it was fairly simple.

What is a "custom WP edition"? (just curious)

I always install WP manually: create DB, edit wp-cofing, upload files via FTP. But I am a control freak - I never give over the control of my sites to scripts.

And, as somebody mentioned above, to be able to use the fantastic MultiSite feature in WP 3.x.x. you need to use FTP, so better start learning about it

I use the proprietary site builder my webhost provides me. Easily done.

However, installing WordPress with FTP, MySQL and what-not is not that hard, I've done this lots of times in the past.

I have my own servers and so have shell access. I keep a folder on the server w/the latest version of WP, all my favorite plugins and themes.

I wrote a script that copies everything to any new site I'm building. I can add a domain to my server, add the database and have a new site up w/all the plugins activated in a matter of 2-3 minutes.

It's all the content that takes time

Going against the grain, I use this installer created by a friend:
Expert WordPress - Create A Blog

That is a referral link as you can see on his page.

The REASON that I use the installer is that when
you do the "standard" install, your installation uses
a lot of default setting. Since those settings are
"defaults" if you don't go in and change them... and
most people don't, the the world knows a lot of
setting that make it easier to get into your blogs
backend.

That installer also installs a number of pre-configured
plug-ins, which are also already activated, but changed
from many of the default setting.

I have a ton of blogs as parts of mini-nets, etc. and
needed the installer just to speed things up for my
team.

it all depends on what I want to do with the domain, but if I'm just going to use it for a blog, I'll install it on the root domain. However, if I want to collect leads, I would install it on a sub-folder. That way I can use the root domain as an index.html squeeze page or message board.

Fantastico through cPanel is super simple.
I use dreamhost sometimes, and they have their own WP installation as well, which is very simple!

But since I transfer sites a lot I also do FTP installation from time to time.

My preferred method is Dreamhost's though.

fantastico is much less effort than manual, it's also avoiding any mistakes, in some occasion i used to spent 1 hour for one install, than some minutes in fantastico.

I almost always use Fantastico, I know there are other ways to do it but it's what I'm used to.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Wordpress CMS however, I think it is overrated

  I used to install via Fantastico until I discovered the
  security risks of that method.
  
  I now only install manually by myself using FTP because
  I control every step of the process and eliminate all of
  the avoidable security risks.
  
  Sure, the manual installation takes a few minutes longer
  but the result is a more secure site and greater peace
  of mind.

To me, installing wp with fantastico is having more security risks, eventhough it is simple.

The problem is, when you install wordpress with fantastico, it is automatically giving wrdp1_ (can't remember exactly) table prefix. It means all wordpress blogs that are on the net having these same table prefix for their database.

The best is to install wp blog manually, and you can choose the more complicated table prefix.

I prefer doing it with Filezilla through ftp. It's super fast and I can easily configure the wp-congfig.php file to something other than localhost.
