Be careful who you outsource your follow-up calls to...

Over the last two days, I have had numerous calls from a telemarketing firm in Las Vegas. No voicemails - just the same number showing up over and over on caller ID. I was out of the office at a conference the last two days, so didn't know I was getting these calls until I got back and saw them on caller ID.

A quick "G" search showed the company, what they did and some of the names they worked for, so I figured it was related to an IM product that I had purchased at some point.

Usually, calling and asking to be taken off the call list is not a problem, but this time the response was unbelievable.

The first person that answered the phone (after the third call - and the vm box was full, so you could not leave a msg), they answered with the generic 'corporate' office (always a good sign) and when I asked to be put on their do not call list, she just laughed and said that since I had bought something from them, they could call me as much as they wanted, and said she did not have to do anything about it. I told her to put a supervisor on the line - and she hung up.

I called back and on the third try(again), a guy answered. When I told him I wanted to be put on their do not call list because they had called me 12 times today alone - he said that was unusual as they usually tried to call at least 14 times.

Now, I have a pretty darned good sense of humor - but this guy was not trying to be funny - the tone was nasty and sarcastic, and again repeated that they could call as often as they wanted because I had bought something at some time from one of their clients.

This time, I hung up.

On their website, there is a list of marketers that use this company - I will not name the company here or give out their phone number - because this is a truly nasty group of people.

BUT - if you are a marketer that is using a service like this - no matter where they are located - you might want to call in and try to get placed on their DNC list and see how it is handled. If it was handled like this situation was tonight - you need to get another telemarketing company pronto.

I can promise you that I will NEVER buy anything from anyone listed on their site again.

This is EXACTLY the kind of stuff that the FTC lives for - and it definitely is NOT going to make me a lifelong customer.

Calling until you reach me is one thing - refusing to STOP call, that is another issue all together. And, even if you have the legal right to do so - as a sales tactic - it SUCKS!

So then why don't you report them to their states Attorney General and the FTC? That will get the ball rolling in shutting them down. Also if you get called from them again, save the phone number and try to record the call if possible. Doing this can make all the difference in the world. You might also want to talk to an attorney, they might be able to get the calls to stop.

Just because you buy something from someone doesn't give them the right to call you after you have told them to stop. It is actually illegal for them to continue on if you tell them to stop. I would take the steps I mentioned earlier.

    Melody,

You should give out their phone number to all of us.
We'll show them a lesson they'll never forget.

We should all FLASH MOB CALL this company & blow up their phone lines!!
Do it every day for 7 days, and then see who they feel like calling 14 times per day.

24 hours of phone calls & no sales for 7 days should shut them up & get them to wise up!

Though that's tempting, why lower ourselves to their level? That is unprofessional and just helps continue to give stuff like that a bad name. It eventually comes around to bite people in the butt who do that.

Contact an attorney and the FTC and Attorney General. Keep records of all that's going on.

Believe me - that is very tempting but would put Allan in legal jeopardy as well as everyone involved just for conspiring to do something like that.

By asking their posted clients to call and see what happens when a customer wants to opt out of their list is going to lose them some major accounts.

I've been in business for more than 30 years - and in a very, very regulated industry - I will take the proper steps, the proper way - and very effectively.

Scrofford: Don't worry - I have no intention of dropping this ball!

tecHead: nu-uh! am not!! LOL - wish I was - it was one of those situations where you sat staring at the phone and trying to decide if that really just happened or it was the burrito you had for lunch causing hallucinations again....the whole thing was just way too weird - even for this biz.

And this company has several well-known names listed on their site - some of whom are WF members......

I am actually a partner in a payment processing company, and we handle everything in-house, so I can't give you any recommendations on who to use, but I will send you a pm.

Yeah, I agree. Although it's not the proper way, it would be nice to put them in their place. Whereas, the fact that they stated, "you bought from us, therefore we can keep calling you" -- means they don't know anything about the DNC list & the law that applies.

Yes, I definitely agree though, contact the FTC & DNC registry & report them.

OR -- you can use a Free computer phone which provides you a virtual phone number & just set your computer to re-dial over & over again calling them & do it yourself.
It's not getting everyone else involved, but does put the matter in your own hands. lol

There's also another thing that's been happening I've noticed. Some marketers are either selling or renting their email lists to other marketers who seem not to have a professional email subscription service (ie: aweber, icontact). This is actually becoming a problem as well.

yeah - I agree - handling this the right way is really no fun ;D as I can think of lots of things I would rather do - especially since I have an unlimited LD calling plan but.....

And yes, you are VERY correct about the selling of lists lately - and not just in the im biz: last year, a well known TV program on the Home & Garden channel was giving a home that my mom REALLY wanted. You had to enter online, so I created email addresses for my mom and dad - neither of whom have a computer or EVER used email.

This contest was the ONLY place these emails were ever used - and you would not believe the types of emails I have receive to those two addresses! And this is well known national company! It started with 'legitimate' offers that you would expect (the kind you get in your credit card statement) and now it's down to the 'hey cutie, I saw u profile last night - you want hook up? I blonde russian cutie looking for hot guy like you'.....

So - the bottom line is your contact info is up for grabs - regardless of the legalities they are supposed to be following!

    Melody,

I'm sorry for the uncomfortable situation you were in.

The call center may be a slimeball nexus...

However - if you truly DID purchase something from Marketer X, perhaps you should tell them of your experience?

I know it's not your obligation to do so, but sometimes that kind of feedback never gets back to the business that hired the outsourcer (call center in this case) and it's critical to have this kind of feedback - please consider closing that loop.

    Have a great day!

I have no idea who they were calling for - and since they never left a msg and basically would not speak to me - I still don't know. But if they call back - and I am sure they will - I will definitely find out who it was and let them know.

But on their site - they list some big names as 'partners' in the company - some of whom are members here.
