What should I use to build a niche social network?

I've got a huge email list in a certain niche and now I'm thinking about creating a social network they can use for free. I know there a lot of programs out there one can use, but I was curious if any of you have good recommendations?

I need one that I can highly customize, and also, display ads on.

Any suggestions?

We have created over 100 niche social networks, and tested every solution out there. Your best bet is using Ning.com. Choose the $19 a month version. That will give you 5000 invites a month. Be sure to customize the body and subject line of the invite through the language editor. If you go with the default invitation, then most will go to the spam folder.

Interesting, and as I'm in the process of building Ning site #2 (this time not for work) I was considering doing mass-email invite to the relevant sector. Can you ellaborate on this and report back on your findings to date please? Curious to hear about this. Also, did you report this to NingHQ?

I was just looking into Ning.com last week for a client of ours, I wasn't sure how they stacked up against some of the other options out there, thanks for the info!

Buddypress is very good and has developers that writes plugins mostly for free. I developed a community with buddypress myself. check out the features My Soccer Pals (buddypress is completely free, you can pm me if you need help with buddypress)

Social engine is also good (if you are willing to spend a bit), it looks a lot like facebook check out Fellow Story - Connection that Matters - Friends can be Connected from any Social network by joining Fellow Story

Ning is fine if you want something out of the box but NOT if you want to highly customize. For my projects I find that nothng really beats Joomla in extensibility. Buddypress will probably be good but really limited now. I've developing my own brew out of Joomla and its come along nicely.

Linking to my site might look promotional so drop me a PM if you are interested in seeing it. I now have it integrated with icontact, a forum, a pretty comprehensive Social network plug in and more to come.

    Question about Ning.

Can you host Ning on your own server or does it have to be like, mysocialnetwork.ning.com?

    Just wonderin.

Ning is not on your server but you can get it to mask to your domain name.

I prefer something less technical so my vote is for Ning. Adding up your domain to get rid of the dot ning subdomain is just a simple click away.
