Creating my own search engine- does it make sense and how?

Hello warriors,
An idea just popped into my head and here am I rushing to get it to the whole world and see if it feasible.
How sensible do you think the idea of having my own search engine is? Heck! Google started in a day and it made alot of sense. Cant I make one and see if it can also make sense and besides maybe I can learn one or two things in the learning room...........

Okay....seriously, do you guys think the idea of making or creating a search engine is feasible and HOW?

How can I make a search engine that will make sense and be innovative enough. What will I need? In terms of knowledge, scripts, software or infrastructure? Thanks so much as you give your helpful advise....

Unless it is going to be a search engine specialized for example in some niche, I would say stop wasting your time and money

Thanks for your response but have you forgotten that facebook met myspace on ground before facebook became the world's largest social networking site? Just a little question for you to answer. No offense though:-)

I didn't mean to come across as negative, but from my point of view, an SE is rather about a top-notch algorithm than about a creative idea or anything else. The Google algorithm has been being developed by huge teams of experts for years now

I now understand your point of view. Realistically speaking, I also do not think I will create the next google by tomorrow morning. I was just thinking what it takes a run a cutting edge search engine and probably see if it success and one day.....become useful for its users and of course rewarding for me in terms of experience and otherwise. Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it.

majestic12.co.uk has done it.. check out their model. i have no affiliation with them aside from a username created at the site, I think, and I tried running their program once or twice, but no longer do.

there is plenty of open source search engine software out there. google it.

If you are serious on competing on the SE market with Google, Yahoo and Bing, I would seriously reconsider.

If however you have a new angle or aproach you might consider it. There are probably still many business or personal areas where there is lack in good search technology.

Ideas that pop to my head: Online dating search engine, employment search engine, real estate search engine, public toilet search engine, el-car loading station search engine...

Thanks for those ideas. If I may ask? What innovation do you think can be made in this areas and please do you think people actually need niche search engines? I seriously dont know.

I never like to kill anyone’s dream or tell anyone that something is impossible so what I’ll say is this: Do you have advanced programming skills? Do you have the skill to market it and promote it? What feature will it offer over the others out there?

If you think you can do it that give it a try… but find out what you can do better, or what you can offer that’s different.

Thanks so much for that encouragement. Its worth a million. Many people take the special office of running you out of your goals and telling you all the things that cant work. I dont know NADA about programming other than setting up a Wordpress blog but I have ideas of promotions running around my head and really driving me nut! My biggest option is using social media marketing.

Does that make sense? Thanks in advance.

I would personally like a follower search engine.

In other words, if I like Seth Godin, I would add him to my personal search engine, and have access to all his work when I searched for stuff.

Since I follow a few internet marketers, that would be an internet marketing search engine with advice from people I trust (or at least gave me a free ebook). I also like rap, so if I follow 50 cent, and he has some advice on social media that matches my query, that would be interresting to me as well. If you follow him on Twitter you know he does it pretty well.

And all my personal friends on facebook, twitter and linkedin would have their saying as well.

Thanks...do you now mean to say that I can have-
      'internet marketers search engine'
      'celebrity search engine'
footballers search engine' and like that? Did I get your message?

What I said, is that my personal search engine will be custom by the people I follow.

Everyone who follow me, will have access to my twitter, facebook, squidooo, youtube, linkedin, blog, flickr, warriorforum etc. I should probably myself add the pages I would want to be available. People could then click the "follow me" button on my blog, or search me up.

Ok so first of all I want to say that there is nothing wrong with your plan and it is totally possible for you to create your own search engine and heck even beat google. Who knew about google 15 years ago?

That said, here are some question I want to ask you:
    1. How will you handle all of the workload?
    2. What are you going to do different than google?
    3. How much capital do you have?

    Let's start with #1:

You are talking some heavy programming work right here so what are your plans for that. Do you know enough programming yourself? How about outsourcing to a "team" of 20-30 programmers. That would make your life easier but it will take some money.

    Decide for yourself.

    Ok so now #2:

What will be your USP (Unique Selling Proposition). Why should people quit google and search using your website. Just keep in mind the WIIFM (What's in it for me) factor in mind and come up with a USP.

See bing's USP is high quality search results than google. So figure your's out and then move on.

    Finally #3:

Competing with google will take loads of money. Now if you have money to start with, great. If not, it will be really hard. If I were you I would figure out how will I get the money that I need for TV commercials and stuff. Here are some ways I would get the money I need:

    Get sponsors
    Get donations
    etc.

Other thing you will have to worry about is getting people to your site. Now I just covered TV commercials in the paragraph above. Here are some of the ways I would get traffic:

    Advertisements (Both online and off)
    Viral Videos
Piggy Back on other's traffic (you know when you download a software and by default it sets your browser to ask.com or something else?)
    etc.

Now this is not all but remember competing with google will take loads of work but stay motivated and keep at it and you will be successful.

Now I want to end by saying:

If you always think about limitations, you get to keep them. ~Les Brown
So don't limit yourself and if you seriously are considering competing against google, by all means go for it.

    Hope it helps

Thanks everyone for dropping by. I really appreciate your time and nice gestures.
At this point, I must say that I am not competing with google cos realistically, I cant do that for now.

But then I can still create a search engine that will make sense to the users right? If thats my plan like it is,

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST APPROACH TO IT?
    Thanks
