Joe, thanks for sharing this great post. I love how Timothy details the exact level of specificity needed so that you don't end up emailing your VA back and forth multiple times (which probably ends up taking more time than if you had done this yourself without the help of your VA!)

      You're right Paul.

Timothy has a way of making me change my thinking. And that is usually a good thing.

      I've just started a re-read of his 4-Hour-Workweek. A good way to start 2011.

      Have a good holiday.

I'm going to re-read his book too, after all we're in IM for the freedom and opportunities that it can provide, right? We do not want to spend all our time doing mundane tasks that can be easily outsourced, and I think that he's an absolute master of efficiency when it comes to doing this.

Thanks for the holiday wishes, I hope you have a great one too.

The problem is that e-mailing your VA ultra-detailed instructions to make a doctor's appointment (the example Tim uses in his post, in case you haven't read it) takes a LOT longer than just picking up the phone and making the appointment yourself. A lot of this stuff falls into the category of outsourcing for the sake of outsourcing.

      Russ that's a fair point.

Where this has come in handy for me is when I'm up late/early and can leave an e-mail knowing it will be taken care of.

I have had to resist "outsourcing for the sake of outsourcing" on occasion though.

Very good point, Joe. This type of task assignment can be especially useful for busy people who'd rather be more focused on high-level activities than mundane stuff that can be easily managed by their VAs. Sometimes interrupting your day on multiple occasions to work on these little tasks can be very distracting, and take away a lot from your overall productivity.
