How Do You Make Sure You Are Not Ripped Off When You Ask For Testimonials?

Hi there,
I am in the process of seeking testimonials for my just completed ebook in a relationship niche. Is there anyway I can make sure that my people is protected when I give the book to people asking for testimonials?

What I mean is anything that I can do to prevent folks from claiming it their own or publishing it before I release the product.

If you can't trust that they will not take advantage, perhaps you shouldn't be asking those people for testimonials.

Also, this thinking is common in entrepreneurship. My instructor, who is very experienced, always told us that it was more important for us to get our product/idea out in front of people and not worry about theft. Worry can kill a product!

I never ask for testimonials prior to launch. I just wait for the real ones to happen, but if you're worried about your product prior to launch, there's just as much to worry about after launch.

This is my solution to ebook piracy.

Ebook Security - Protect Your Ebooks from Piracy

I'm using it and will never go back to just pdfs.

Interesting! Does it convert the PDF into a .exe-file, Suzanne?

I have not had a lot of aggravated customers, and I have a notice near the ebook sale button that it is a protected file and if they don't like that, don't buy it. It probably aggravates the hell out of pirates, though. I see no reason to continue to use pdfs with piracy so widespread and with piracy evolving the way it has to the pirates creating "membership" sites that features everybody's WSOs at a fraction of the price that you're selling them and with better position in the serps for your product name due to Black Hat SEO. It doesn't have to be tolerated.

Yes ... it's an exe file. You download the program and it converts your ebook to exe in just seconds. You can also revoke the license for anyone who requests a refund and the ebook will no longer open. I love it.

          Ah, thank you.

That may make discussion of it here difficult/contentious, though. Members of this forum collectively seem to have a great dislike of .exe files (though at the same time, some other members have sold tens of thousands of them without any problems!). I remain interested. Thanks, Suzanne.

Yeah, I've seen the discussions, and I've seen everybody and his uncle's WSOs being offered for free or dirt cheap by people who are not the owners. I personally don't care if a buyer does not want an exe file. I've given them notice that's what they'll be getting and they don't have to buy it if they don't like that.

I was doing research on a product that was sold on the WF and I saw that course being offered just about everywhere on the Net that it could be offered for free. I looked at download stats of just one site ... over 2,000 free downloads. That was just one site. Multiply that by every site that had acquired it, and the number is huge.

The reason they have a problem with .exe files is that downloading them from unknown sources gives a major risk of viruses. It happens very often, although Suzanne's solution look like a good thing, and with a notice near the notice button I think it probably would be fine. Like she said, the only people it should aggravate are the pirates!

I have a copy of ebook pro but haven't used it. It also sets up as an .exe file for PC's and a zip file for mac users. Not sure if it unzips and becomes an .exe file though.

This is a good point. Product theft is a real threat before AND after you launch a product. I would be reluctant to ask for testimonials upfront too and just wait for the real ones after purchase by offering a bonus or so for anyone who buys the book and wants to offer a testimonial once it has benefited them in some real way.

I would have to agree with tandren544. Ask for reviews/testimonials from trusted members of the forums you visit. Those with high post counts, lots of "thanks" and plenty of iTrader (or whatever the forum happens to use to rank their member's trustworthyness).

Offer review copies to trusted members in the WSO forum.

This. Find people on here with over 100 posts and ask them to review your product. They won't be able to give "testimonials" per se, unless it's something they can actually use, but they will be able to give you positive feedback. I think you'll be surprised at how nice and supportive people are on here.

The strength of this forum is that a good reputation is worth money. That means people who regularly do business on here tend to be very trustworthy, and very eager to help people succeed.

Looks interesting but it's $30 per month?? That would add up pretty fast and there are better alternatives for a one off price.

That's a very small percentage of my ebook/WSO sales. Well worth it. I bought a one-off product and it was horrible. The first 3 sales were nothing but problems. I dumped it fast and got a refund and went with this and have not regretted it. It is so simple. Oh and the one off product ... it didn't even really prevent piracy at all. The page said I would receive my protected file after I submitted it to them within 3 hrs. It took 7 hrs. Every time I want to revise it, I would have to send it to them again. Once I got the file, I realized that it would have to be delivered via a static download page. Anyone who found the page, could download it and anyone who downloaded it could license it for one computer. So even if they didn't actually buy it, they could license it, tell others what the download page is and there it goes ... pirated.

This solution only delivers a license to purchasers of the ebook and it can be revoked in a second from your desktop if necessary. It doesn't matter how many people download it because if they haven't licensed it after purchase, it won't open.
