Why is the number of AdSense impressions one hundredth of the number of visitors?

Anyone know why the number of visitors to a site, as reported by AWStats, is consistantly between 50 and 100 times the number of AdSense impressions on the same pages as reported by AdSense?

These sites are WordPress with a fast-loading theme (BlueSense) . . . even on my slow connection in a 3rd world country, the whole page loads at once. Even on a simple html site I constructed myself, AWStats still reports about 8 times as many visits as AdSense does.

Is Google cheating me, or is there some other explanation?

I know AdSense lies in the other direction, because 6 websites for which the domain expired months ago, and for which I removed all the files, and for which the domains don't show up on Google, still show exactly one AdSense impression per day, every day. How can there be an AdSense impression on a site which doesn't exist?

Any ideas as to what's going on?

    How long is your average time on site and bounce rate? Impressions could be low if your time on site is low, but I'm not sure how long they count as an impression :-/

      Ah, OK, spidered by GoogleBot 5636 times, and other bots thousands of times this month. BUT, AWStats says specifically that the spider hits are NOT included in any other stats, so I guess it's not that.

    Time on a page . . . 85% less than 30 seconds, 5% 30 sec to 2 min.

    The number of visits is at least twice the number of unique visitors.

    Not sure how to find out the bounce rate . . . I don't see any stats for that on AWStats.

    As waddle said, it could be bots - it could also be traffic exchanges (if you are using them). Many traffic exchanges or purchased traffic will not be real people using real browsers. It will show as a "hit", but may not necessarily show as a pageview. Also, many people who use traffic exchanges also use ad blockers which could contribute to the low ad impressions.

    No, I don't use any traffic exchanges or purchased traffic, at all.

    If 90% of your traffic is staying for less than 2 minutes I'd start seriously evaluating either your site or your traffic method. No offense intended, but that's a really high rate (bounce rate is just the number of visitors that leave quickly; how quickly is up to you)

      If I knew how to change that I would! I've got a variety of sites, including auto-blog article sites, article sites with unique articles, sites with unique, expert in-depth reviews, high-quality content sites (which I've spent hundreds of hours on, and get extremely good comments), and they all get about the same percentage of visitors who leave in less than 30 seconds.
