Article Writers...Get Out Of Your Rut

A common complaint I hear from article writers using article writing to market
their own products or products as an affiliate is that they run out of things
to write about. They simply can't think anymore.

One way to get out of your rut (because that's what you're in) is to write
about something else...even if it's not for money.

Lately, I've written articles on:

The Giants
Cats
Harry Potter

And who knows what else. Not even a resource box at the end. Just content
for content's sake.

I have found that it's allowed me to think clearer on my money articles.

Plus, it's great practice to get out of your comfort zone to see if you can
actually write something that you don't normally write about and get it
accepted by a top article directory.

Try it. If you're having trouble writing in your niche, you have nothing to
lose.

It just might recharge those article writing batteries of yours and get you
back on the path to content for dollars.

I get out of the rut by picking a topic out of the sky, and then going and spending a few hours or a few days reading about it.

Reading about how the other half lives, often gives me the inspiration I need to find new value in my own topic niche.

Some of the best articles I have written were inspired by some of the most off-the-wall topics. If I shared the details with you, you would have to ask how one inspired the other, but trust me, it happens.

Steve, I haven't taken it to the level of submitting to directories, but I do have a few blogs stashed around the net for just this purpose...

Bill, I'm in your camp on this one. Truth be told, I probably read more of my wife's "woman's magazines" than she does.

I am sorry. I have tried that, but it doesn't work for me as well...

But give me How Stuff Works or a thesis on economics, and I am off to the races...

I think he just means article writers that don't know what to write about on a subject they've written about before or not written about before. Sort of like writers block.

I also think he's just trying to help people on this occasion, although I know he likes to shoot and hang people from time to time.

In this thread I think he's being very helpful.

Bill, I heard that dead horses run faster than living ones. Is it true?

I also heard that there's a way one can combine dead horses via permutation to form a living horse. Is this also true?

Awesome advice Steve. I do the same thing, except I usually write to my 'venting' blogs, and some non-IM forums.

Another thing I do, is go to a niche forum, (where I don't go to make money of course) and start stirring the pot on whatever topic I find that's controversial.

What a great idea! I have days and sometimes weeks that I just can't compose fast enough. The ideas and material just pour out. Then I also have days that I don't even want to think about my niches or anything to do with writing. I don't think I get writer's block but it could be called writer's bad attitude. I will definitely give your idea a try.

I would still put a resource box linking to one of my sites. Even if the article is completely unrelated to the site content you can benefit from the backlink, plus you never know if any high PR websites out there might pick up your article and give you even more links. Just thought I'd point that out in case any newbies read this.

But as far as dealing with writer's block, that's some great advice, thanks!

Actually thats not such great advice. One; Why would I click your resource box if I got there and it had nothing to do with the article?

Why would a high PR site pick an article and put it on their site if the resource box link had nothing to do with their site? Or if the resource box link was relevant, why put an irrelevant article on their site?

I'm not being rude sir but if a newbie is reading this I'd like to add that there's a ton more to article writing than just getting backlinks. There's also a bunch of easier ways just to get backlinks than writing articles.

Like I say, apologies, I know you mean well, I just wouldn't do that myself.

Haha no apology necessary. Your argument makes sense, but I'm just coming from experience...I've actually had more than a couple decent PR sites give me some good backlinks because they liked my ezine article and posted it on their site, even though my resource box linked to something completely different than what the article talked about.

In my resource boxes I just say something to the effect of "I enjoy creating websites blah blah blah, here's one of them......". For the life of me I can hardly write a paragraph for some niches I'm in, but on other subjects I can just whip out tons of articles, and they all give me great backlinks.

Anyway, I'm getting way off topic. Sorry Steve, I'll shut up now lol.

I'm writing for several years, so the writer's block is not unfamiliar to me. In the course of times I've applied a few things to cure that 'illness'.

One of the solution may be that you just leave your rut and write about something different (as Steve proposes). My subsidiary topics are varied:

          - my memories of childhood, excursions, family events, travels, etc.

          - girls I've had dates with (I don't show them to my wife)

          - the miaowing cat of my neighbor, and how this affects my dogs

          - people I met on the local market

          - view from my window (in rain, shunshine, snowfall, etc.)

          - and so on.

Another cure is when I'm full, I switch my computer out. Taking a pencil and a notebook and I'm writing something. Sometimes I'm drawing a picture, little doodles can help get the juices flowing. Another time I'm talking to a neighbor, also because ideas can be immersed. My habit is to going to go to the local library, it can always be a helping method.

If these solutions aren't effective because you are exhausted, then a good sleep may be the rescue. When nothing helps then you can take a day or a weekend off with your family, or read as much as possible, or visit a movie. Don’t even think about writing. After this relaxation you’ll find yourself full of ideas.

All the best, and Merry Christmas to you ALL!

            Smart man

I take top niches and add a slant to them so they fit the main themes I need, for example, in the following, fill in the blank with your keywords or theme, and adjust as needed:

Make Money Working from Home with ________

            Health Today + __________

            __________ + Budget Tips

            Blogging & _________

            _________ + Christmas / New Year's (or other holiday / season)

_________ + (major headliner from top news site)

_________ + Sports (choose one: baseball, hockey, etc)

            Recycling / The Green Movement & ___________

            Technology Today & __________

            Computers and __________

            Popular Software for ___________

Smart Phones / Cell Phone Apps and ____________

            ...and so on...

This is why people should have blogs. Focusing too much on one thing makes the mind recoil. Writing about a variety of things keeps the mind on its toes.

I find that you can often get out of a rut,
And get back to being, of writing, King Tut,
By setting aside each and every if, and or but,
On word processor app, to avoid a paper cut.

You just let the words flow freely, say what?
Let 'em all hang out like a guy with a hefty gut.
Hide away yourself in your wheatgrass hut,
To keep the distractions of the world out shut.

If you get hungry, maybe nibble on a nut,
But please share it if you've a hungry mutt.
Now is not the time for ball and club to putt.
Nor is it time to practice your artful woodcut.

You think this all nonsense? You're a word bigot.
Go down to the barber and get yourself a crewcut.
This is a way to get creative juices flowing like a zealot,
Who runs amuck with ideas aplenty, before his haircut.

Oh, my. Flamingo legs do look so flimsy. I'm never going to look at one the same way.

This is why I have a Constant Content account. I write these random articles, get them accepted, and they sit there waiting for someone searching for an obscure niche article to find mine and only mine... :p I've sold a bunch this way. An extra $20 or $50 or $100 out of the blue is never a bad thing...

    True story.

In my blog I always write about IM, SEO. BUT a couple weeks ago wrote a post ranting about Christmas presents.

Post got top 10 for Christmas gifts search in Google Portugal, and site got hammered by uncommon traffic last weeks.

The gold is not always where we search for it...

    Great post Steven!

I noticed this when I started doing simple rewrites on Fiverr for play money (video games, etc).

I have written about retirement homes, beekeeping, real estate, and a billion other subjects.

It's cool b/c when I go write about IM I'm totally ready...it's amazing how freaking awesome this works...even with one non-normal article.

    Great idea to share!

    Cheers,

    Brad

That rather depends. Are you representing yourself as someone who only ever talks about weight loss, or as a human being with multiple varied interests?

I get a lot of criticism from people who complain that I drink too much, swear too much, am inappropriately sexual, and should not discuss my unpopular political and religious beliefs in public.

But that's me. Do you want to buy stuff from some fictional cardboard person with a fake name and a photo pulled from a stock photo site?

      Or from a real person?

Because that cardboard cutout over there isn't me. And if you like it better, go buy from the lie you like instead of someone real. I don't need your money that badly.

John already hit the nail on the head but you can have a pen name that you utilize for obscure topics, eclectic niches or random musings.

Steven - That explains why when I read your article on the musical band Yes it had no resource box.

Here are a few ways I avoid writer's block:

1 – Conduct research using Google
2 – Write in short spurts
      3 – Write in a conversational tone
      4 – Avoid distractions
5 – Obtain ideas from TV shows
      6 - Observe questions/answers using Yahoo Answers

Consider the obtaining ideas from TV shows tip. I normally just have a notebook and pen which I use to capture note or highlights from the show as I watch it.

The television programs that normally catch my interest are geared towards financial planning, gardening, crafting, healthy eating and other similar niches.

I’ve found this method also works well with the many infomercials that are on television. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. The programs on acne prevention, losing weight, getting out of debt, making millions on the Internet...etc

In fact, as I conduct a channel search right now I see that the following shows are on that could be worth watching for article creation in these niches:
      • unique collectibles
      • foreclosure secrets
      • financial secrets
      • power tools
      • Slim in 6 Weeks
      • home fitness
      • age maintenance systems
      • relieve back pain
      • simple craft ideas
      • 3-in-1 Multi-Vac
      • portable steamers
      • carpet cleaners
      • Internet Millions
      • Total Gym XLS
      • lighting pieces
      • fashion wear
      • jewelry
      • Ab Secrets
      • hair loss
      • …and many, many more niche topic shows.
      Respectfully,
      Tim

      Great Advice, Steve!

I don't usually have that problem because I write for so many niches that I just have to
look through my list of niches to see what inspires me today...

Unfortunately, that means I'm not always writing in the ones I should, but oh well..

And of course I also have blog posts to write, plus writing for my clients.

In fact, here's something I've discovered years ago -- at Toastmasters!

Whether you write or speak, figuring out what about you're going to write/speak is the
same process. And here's what I discovered back then:

The more I write/speak, the more ideas I get about what ELSE to write/speak.

I have no worries about running out of material anytime soon!

Here's some things I do when I get hit with writers block.

    * Switch niches. Pick out a niche you've wanted to target and just haven't and pump out some articles in that one. Changing gears and then returning to my main one always helps.

*Write your articles grouped by niche. If you've got to write 10 articles per niche, in say 3 different niches, write all ten for each one at a single sitting. Having the topic fresh in my mind always makes new ideas pop up.

*Always keep a pen and notepad on you. New ideas pop up in the strangest of places. When you get stuck open up your notebook.

*Use Ezine Articles title suggestion tool. Add in your keywords and bang, you've got a bunch of titles that should spring some ideas into your mind that you can write about, and you'll already have a pretty good title to use.

*Read. Too many writers don't do this one. I find the more I read, whether related to my niche or not, the less I get writers block. Just getting my mind going and thinking seems to wake it back up when I'm in a writing slump.

*Read about your niche. This one should be obvious, but again, many people will never pick up a magazine in their related niche, and are therefore losing out on an absolute wonderful source of ideas.

Just some of the things I do to overcome writers block.

    Best wishes,
    Sylvia

Try turning your articles into videos. While its not "article" marketing, it can really help increase the value of your articles if you link to them.
