.com vs .net. Urgent. please help...

i finally wanted to build my own website. but i was struck that i was late by a day and that the domain name was taken by someone else. when is saw the site it sells in the same niche (also an affiliate site). is it ok to pursue myfirstdomain.net while there is another website called myfirstdomain.com? is there any potential of being sued.

what should i do? what would you do? I'm literally waiting for any comment.

    Don't register a .net. If you're serious about pursuing a long term business on the internet, then you need a .com. It makes you look more professional. I would only use a .net, .org, .info if I'm using a short term business that I don't care much about.

    The .com is usually in the driver's seat, though in a strict search rank sense you might have equal chances of a higher ranking, since you are apparently starting at the same time as the .com.
    If you were not investing serious time and money then the .net would not hurt so much, if building a major company with a brand name that gets type in traffic you would have a problem, users automatically add a .com to a name. I see browsers add a .com if one just types in: myfirstdomain with no extension (browser might just be finding top ranked version)
    Big developers buy .com, .net, .org together as insurance against cyber squatters.

    Are you getting a keyword domain?, useful for niche site ranking, also consider finding a 5 - 10 year old name at godaddy auctions buy now prices are $5 - $9, age helps with ranking.

    I think that .com, .net, and .org all have the same power as far as SEO is concerned.

    As whether you should purchase the domain name, I don't think you will have any problems using the name as long as it is not a trademarked name.

    .com is the way to go really, you can get away with an org but as said above com is the automatic thing that everyone thinks of after a website apart from localized ones like .co.uk which can also be useful if you are focusing on a specific country.

      it's not trademarked so i guess it's ok then. yeah, the dot com seemed to be the default even in my browser..

      in that case, i'll buy the rest of the complex (net, org, info) for the dot com i just bought when i get my first paycheck

    A .com is recommended. Ask someone what he/she would name a website, and the answers will likely end with .com each time.

      I am suggesting .com. because it is most famous and the persons who are newbie they only know .com and majority of famous websites are using .com. This is better for you.

    This is basically common sense. Would it be common to run a x,xxx,xxx business on an .info or a .com(Just an example). As someone previously posted, .com gives it a more professional feel. For some of my blogs, I can get extremely good amounts of views on my .info domains, but I would NEVER use a .info for my business. Being active in the hosting industry for a few years, It would only seem professional to have a .com.

    This is obviously my opinion about the .com, but it just doesn't seem right to have a .net, .info, .org as a business domain. If you want your domain to be worth more, go with a .com.

    Try using .com, it is better than .net. Even though .com is not free, it is much better, because it is trusted and it is hosting for a long time and also people are afraid going to sites because some have viruses. I would suggest using .com

    When the .com is taken, the .net is usually the second best. That's my rule of thumb and I have been successfully ranking both extensions for fairly high competition KWs.
