hey Warriors,

I am working on a last minute project for a client, and I need to figure out a way to do this fast. I'm putting up a landing page for him with a product that is downloadable audios. Now, he wants the download page protected so no one can go there. I don't know how to do this. Can anyone offer an easy solution as I'm trying to get this all done tonight?????

thanks!!!!!!

rebecca

The best way is to use an SSL certificate.

There is some info here: How to use SSL to encrypt a Web in Expression Web, in SharePoint Designer 2007, and in FrontPage 2003

    Hope this helps

Does the download page only need one username and/or password? Or do you need a list of usernames and passwords that could be updated frequently?

If it's just one username/password you can use a .htaccess file. (Google it).

Have the person put in their name and email. Then they get an email with a link to the download page. This link has an md5 hash of their email and time of issuance. Person goes to the page and link expires after x number of minutes. Use php for this.

  • Hey Warriors... I followed this tutorial - Password Protecting Your Pages with htaccess

And now it just keeps asking for my username and password and it won't actually let me into the page.

Anyone know how to fix it?

    Thanks!!!!

Undo what you did... no offense, but you've locked the page down so that no one can access it without a username and password or done it incorrectly so that NO accounts have access.

How to skin this cat depends on how many different unique logins you need.. if each buyer needs their own unique login, you need a bigger system in place.

If you can just use one username and password for everyone, backup and try that htaccess tutorial again, then send out that one username and password to everyone.

If you are looking for the unique download thing above (each person has a login or a unique download that expires) then check out dlguard.com (not an affiliate link).

      Good luck!

          OK, well, I'm really confused.

If you are trying to password protect the page, and it's telling you that the message above, then you have accomplished your goal.

The web server will give you that message and ask for a username and password.

What happens when you put in the username and password you set up?

If it doesn't work, then you didn't do something correctly.

If it's not prompting at all, just giving a denial message (i.e., no place to put IN a username/password) then there's something wrong with the setup as well - verify the tutorial with another one, there are hundreds on the net - search for htaccess tutorial.

    Anyone have any answers???
Well, please remember that usernames and passwords are case-sensitive when using htaccess (Unix web servers specifically)...

If you are getting the pop-up, that means you have locked it down... if you enter a user/pwd and it just re-challenges you again, you either don't have the right user/password, or it's something really messed up.

    Most likely, it's case-sensitivity that's biting you.

e.g., these are all different usernames or passwords:

    SecureUser
    secureuser
    SECUREUSER

    Mypassword
    mypassword
    MYPASSWORD

Hope it helps.... who do you host with? Perhaps their support can help? I'm willing as well to keep plugging. sending a pm with contact info.
