Giving Away Something For FREE!

I have looked and looked and can't find a rule on giving something away for free on the main discussion forum.

Is it legal to do so?

I was thinking of designing and giving away custom signature banners simliar to the one in my signature file, just different colors, for x amount of people, on a first come first serve basis, with no strings attached at all for the holidays.

Would someone who knows the correct accurate answer on this please respond or at least give a link to where it says I cannot do this. I do not need to get an infraction.

All the best,
Steve

I mean in this main discussion thread, where we are right now.

And no, I am not really interested in paying money to give away my free services.

        Hey Steve,

there's absolutely no rule to break if you do that here. So, there's nothing illegal about it here.

The only that could be probably wrong with it is your motive but I guess that your motive is right.

Just my thought. I might wrong but I think you have to give it a try first. Why?

There's no harm in trying and there are some Xmas giveaway threads running here in the main internet marketing discussion forum even as I type this reply.

        Cheers.

As stated, do it in the War Room or make a WSO. And let's face it, as nice as the offer is, it is still a promotion for the design services in your signature - whether intentional or not. That sort of stuff is not for the main discussion forum.

Since when is giving a promotion? I guess talking would be a promotion also?

People usually see things through their own eyes, or the way they think, maybe thats why you think that giving is a promotion, because thats something you would do?

Trouble is, EVERYONE thinks his OWN products are that good, whether it has any basis in reality or not.

I mean, honestly, I'm mystified that people don't have Google Alerts set on my name in the WSO forum so they can stampede over and throw money at me every time I release a new product.

I gotta say that there are some paranoid people here at times. No trust in your fellow man's motivations. Not you CD, just in general and I understand why people think this way.

Because they have hardly ever experienced pure giving with no strings attached. There is a world within this world where people actually have pure motivations. And are capable of giving just to give no strings attached.

My fellow man does not care about my well-being as much as he cares about his own.

This is not going to change anytime soon.

EDIT: Incidentally, I have a free product which delivers the download link in the "confirm opt-in" message from my autoresponder. That's no strings attached, too. You can confirm... or not. Either is fine. And, amazingly enough, people always confirm.

I am just going by the information I have at hand. You are wanting to offer free banner design to members of this forum. In your signature you have a big banner advertising your ecover design services and 4 other graphic design related links. Forgive me for drawing conclusions...

No one is stopping you from giving stuff away, I think it's great. But there are places on this forum to do it. This part of the forum is for IM discussions not promotions or giveaways. The WSO and War Room were put together for those very things. Besides, it's in your best interest to post it in one of those sections because that is where people go when looking for services like graphic design.

Post it in the right place and I'm sure you'll have a lot of people take you up on your kind offer.

I understand your point, but see post #41 for the truth.

Yes, I am graphic artist, no doubt about that. So I see your side. I could just hide my sig link in all my post to prove my point if needed......

Either way, I've been informed that giving free things away on this section, although not written anywhere is not allowed and I understand and will abide by what I have been told.

Unfortunately I will not pay for a WSO to giveaway a gift. Maybe if I was a rich man, I would. I may just suprise people and make a signature banner and give it them when they least expect it, what they do with it is their business. Its just fun to give.

                Steve,

paying for a WSO to giveaway a gift is part of the generosity. A truly natural giver can go to any length to make sure gives.

"For God so loves the world that he gave His only begotten son..." Now, that's a natural giver - he doesn't even think of what he has to lose; he thinks just about giving...

You don't have to be rich to pay for a WSO. Is it not $40?

How much did you pay to be a War Room member? How much did you pay to have the signature banner?

I think this thread should be closed and locked because it's turning into something else.

The OP's question has been answered long time ago. The message has been passed long time ago. And I believe that the answer/message has been accepted long time ago too.

We all deserve a happy day, at least today.

This thread turned into something else along time ago........

$40.00 is actually 40 $1 Double McDonalds Hamburgers. Thats alot of food.

I think being free to give something away for free, and being able to do it for free is the best plan for me.........

                  Yes, please lock this thread.............

I would suggest you bring creativity into it and send it to "Members Contest & Challenge" sub-forum.

Maybe tag it, "Signature Banner Contest bla...bla...bla..."

    Just my suggestion.

The correct answer is that the main forum is not for giving
away things. While it's a nice thought, what happens is that
it soon turns into another WSO section, with people using
the main forum for list building.

That's why you have a section just for announcing free
ebooks, etc. It's Allen's way of keeping up the quality of
the discussion in the main forum... which is another reason
why you have the off-topic forum.

The War Room seems to be somewhat different and I have
taken advantage of some REAL NICE freebies in there. I'm
not sure why it's different, but the main forum is not for
    giving thing away.

Moderators feel free to correct me :-)

In 1998, I drove my motor home from Anchorage Alaska, through
Canada, across the US, down to Florida... to my last Air Force
assignment (Eglin Air Force Base)... and decided to stay.

I did that drive in October incidentally, when the mountainous
roads were icy... and an exciting drive. The most interesting
part of the drive was the night I was somewhat tired, and
thinking of pulling over to take a rest, when I saw this sign saying
"Welcome to Purgatory" which jolted me enough that I got
        the hell out of there

I love the Emerald Coast... and I've lived in some very
beautiful places, including 4 years in Hawaii.

We've actually had 2 internet marketing meet-ups on
Okaloosa Island, where I got most of the attendees
by posting a note on this forum. I'm sure we'll do
        that again this year.

Let me know the next time that you're in town. We could
        do lunch...

Sure, will do, next time I'm down that way. Yes, there are some awefully named places on the way down through the south, that would make just about anyone run away.

Eglin Airforce base is from what I understand one of the best places to retire. I had made many, many, many friends from all branches of the military and ranks while in FWB-Destin area.

The beaches were at one time not to known about. I've had people that have stayed all over the world on other beaches, that have said that the emerald coast is way at the top even compared to other great beaches in the world.

I spent all my 20's in florida as a bartender on the beach, what a great time it was. Wouldn't trade that for anything.

Anyway, nice talking to ya, and may see you in the near future.

    Hello Steve,

I had the same question couple of weeks back. After some research, I found a Warrior Forum moderator string which mentioned that Free stuff can only be posted into the Warrior Special Offers section. Sorry I didn't bookmark that page or I could have shared it with you.

    Hope this helps!

Hmmm, I never mentioned a sign-up list or list building at all. As a matter of fact I said no strings attached.

My motivation is just to give.

Well, I guess I will hold off, maybe do it later somehow.

    Steve,

    Willie pretty much nailed it.

Same problem as with so many things. If we let the folks with the right intentions do it, we end up with folks doing almost the same things, but with the clear intention of using the discussion sections for advertising.

Even that wouldn't be bad, except that it would take over. We'd be flooded with them, and the shills would be out in force on top of that. We've seen this before.

The War Room is a better choice for that. And yes, I know that doesn't seem fair. It's just about the only way that will work, though.

Ok, just needed clarification from someone I knew was in charge.... Because its not written anywhere that I could find and as you know I have seen some people giving free things away, at least in the webdesign forum.

      No big deal......

      All the best,
      Steve

Yeah. I know the thread you mean. I haven't looked at that section enough to grok the impact yet. I will be, starting after Christmas.

Sometimes the sub-forums can be handled differently because of their narrow focus. If it works, we try to leave it alone.

Didn't take it that way. It's a legitimate question, and you're probably not the only one who wonders about it. I just don't know the right answer yet, so I figured I'd explain why it might not be the same for all sections.

That's because you aren't giving gifts, you are giving bonuses to a purchase. There is a difference.

true, but I don't have to give the gifts to
sell the product, as the product was already
selling on its own without the gifts,

Of course - I wasn't saying that there is anything wrong with giving bonuses. People do that all the time.

One of my very best subjects back in high school was "Literature"
and I was taught about "poetic license" and this allows me to decide
to use "gifts", instead of "bonuses", if that's what I felt I am giving,

And for those who were not literature enthusiasts like me, poetic
            license, according to thefreedictionary.com is...

The liberty taken by an artist or a writer in deviating from
conventional form or fact to achieve a desired effect.

But that's not poetic license. Poetic license is when you write a sonnet in trochaic tetrameter instead of iambic pentameter, or put an alexandrine into the middle of it instead of at the end, or pretend a specific kind of flower bloomed out of season so you can use it symbolically. Using a synonym isn't a deviation from established form or fact.

When choosing which opinion one prefers,
                  It can be difficult to choose aright;
The path is fraught with danger, and no light
Dispels the shadows where dark creatures stir.
And sometimes, when confronted with that choice,
                  'Tis mere familiarity we crave;
Although we tell ourselves that we are brave,
Instead, we seek a comfortable voice.
So rest we still in what we knew before,
The safety of the choice already made
                  Retaining self-assurance easily...
The path is clear, the cobblestones well-laid,
And insecurity is felt no more
When all we know is what we choose to see.

Oh, but I'm sure poets don't know anything about poetic license ANYWAY.
