Affiliate links target="_blank"?

Hi,

I was wondering which works best for you; making affiliate links open in a new window or in the current window and thus closing your site?

Both have pro's and con's. Biggest pro of new window is that if a visitor doesnt like whats on the page your linking him to he can easily close the tab and click another link. Biggest pro of opening in a new window is that you encourage the visitor to stay on that website and buy something.

Which do you use? On most of my sites I have all outgoing links in a new window.

The best is if you make the affiliate link open in a new window. Why? Because, if it's opening in the same window , the visitor may close the website and you'll lose a possible buyer of another services.

So go for "open in a new window".

I'm going to suggest doing what this forum does, what google does,
and a great many other "respected" and highly trafficked sites do...

If it is to an internal (same site) page, "parent window", otherwise...

    NEW WINDOW...

    Be Well!

I agree this method seems to work best for me.

New window so even if they close it, they have something to keep browsing through just in case they are searching for something else.

Depends on what is linking to what.

If you have a sales page that is selling a single product you're probably better off to open the link in the same window. They are either going to buy that product or not. There is no reason for them to ever return to your site.

If you have a site that offers multiple products it might be better to open each link in a new window. If they don't purchase the product and close that window you still have another shot at making a sale.

So, situation dictates course of action.

I open all offsite links in a new window.

I do it in the event that if they don't like where they last clicked, they can keep reading my site to see where else I might link that they will want to go.

It works for me, because most of my sites are information heavy with more than one set of links to follow.

Websites that force links to open in a new window irritate the hell out of me. I'm perfectly capable of using the back button if I want to return to your site, thankyouverymuch.

Just thought I'd throw a differing opinion out there, FWIW.

I dont know if it really matters, and that is such a wierd thing to split test I bet there aren't many people out there that actually know if it makes a difference

I prefer to have them open in a new window, so if they don't like the new window site and close it, my site is still there for another look
