i always install it in the root as you can always set the home page up as a static page. THis way you can use Wordpress SEO plugins on the home page as well.

Also if you are looking to have a sales/squeeze page on the home page that has a different look or feel from your blog you can just use a separate page template.

There are actually free squezze page templates out there that you can use in wordpress.

Anyway that is just my opinion others may think differently.

I would recommend you do domain.com/blog for your blog, domain.com/salespage, etc and NOT use subdomains. Links you build for your main domain will not count for your subdomain and vice-versa, so keep everything as pages off of your main domain.

In my opinion it would be best to have your sales page on the index page of your site and the blog in a subdirectory. Simply add a link to your blog on your sales page.

So install your blog into domainname.com/blog/ and install your sales letter into the root directory and rename it index.html. This way you can link directly to your domain in your articles.

I recommend the form like domain.com/blog, because it's easy to make us know that is a blog for your website or products, besides, this way also is benefit for your primary domain.

Static page as your home page.

Blog on another page, named blog or updates or news or something like that.

Sales page on another page named product or the actual name of your product.
