Facebook Friends

Just been watching a video by Jo Barnes (very good by the way) on promoting your fan page. She advises to get as many friends as you can but says you need to deliver a killer personal message to them so that they will accept.

What would yours be.... in 5 sentences or less?

    Huh, well that's a tricky question. It depends on what you're promoting on Facebook. I promote a small network marketing biz. Here's what i usually write:

    Hi {First Name},
    I saw you are in XYZ group and I just joined too. I'm looking to connect with other people who have the same interests as me. See you around!

    Sometimes I'll personalize it a bit more depending on what I'm doing. I use Facebook Friend Bomber a lot.

    what u say is correct, its better to get as much as friends u can, or u can join with several people and promote your fan page..

    Just be yourself...what I do is i take some time to look at their info section and try to find something in common and mention it..my template though is below

      See, my golden rule is never to include any links or websites in my personal message to people. It looks like advertising and I find that many people don't accept my friend request. You need to build the relationship first before you show them what you have to offer.

        I totally agree with you. At this point, it's better to build relationship first then business will follow.

        Being yourself is a pretty common advice but is really effective especially in building better relationship and connection with others.

      As others have said do not put any links in the message. I'd also try and find people who have a number of mutual friends so you can mention that as well.

As soon as Facebook get wind and know how it works they can look for traces and start suspending accounts - it has happened with other programs in the past. If you are in Facebook for the long term, build your friends up naturally. No point risking things.

      I built up my niche friend list to just under 5,000 people over the space of around 6 months with no tools or software programs - just naturally. Over that time I also built up 2 fan pages in the same niche with over 19,000 fans in total. So it can be done, very easily.

        Huh, interesting, did not know this. There is a way to us the software so it looks like a "natural" request rather than a machine. But, yes I would prefer to do it myself. My main issue is time rather than anything else. Do you mind if I ask how you were able to build up your fanpages??

          It's the classic snowball effect. It will start off slowly but the more fans you get the faster it grows. I also made sure I posted content to it regularly - and content that gets people commenting. Remember, whenever someone comments on something it then shows up in their friends feeds. So the more content you post the more chances there are of this happening.

          No matter what niche you are in you should be able to find at least one or two interesting/popular videos on Youtube you can post in your fan page each week. That's all I did. Set a reminder on my PC that pops up on a Tuesday telling me to go and post another video. You'll also find out which time of day gets a better response after you do it a few times.

          So without all the blabbering above, just post regular content and make sure it is content that people will love to talk about. As the numbers get bigger, the fan page will grow much faster.

        Remember that people are on Facebook to be social first and foremost.

        When you are hooking up with "real friends" that you may have gone to high school or college with some time ago- how do you speak?

        Do you lead with any sales pitch at all?
        No- you don't you find out what's happening with them first.

        So do the same.

        For heaven's sake at least be familiar with their profile, background, fun activities and friends- so that you can show that there is a human behind the message- and not a drone.

    I have a really hard time approving any marketers as friends on Facebook anymore because I know I'll quickly be bombarded with all kinds of invites to events, posts on my wall, and inbox messages that are hardly ever personal in nature.

    Unless someone really gives me a valid reason to approve their friend request, I tend to steer clear.

    Saying... "I see we have 215 friends in common, lets connect." just doesn't cut it.

      Agreed. These things work better in other niches.

      The one I hate is being tagged in people's photos that have nothing to do with you...

        Oh yeah. We had a raging debate about that the other day on my wall. Thankfully, I've done really well to prune down my friends on Facebook and almost no one seems to tag spam or abuse my wall anymore. (I tend to publicly call people out when they do so, and it's not always pretty).

        With 5000 friends on there, it's very impressive that most people keep it very mellow. I truly love my Facebook friends and the experience that I get from there. It's like no other in my opinion.

    As long as you deliver the message to them politely with respect, you can invite them. You must tell to them that you too have the same interest and if there is a benefit. It will attract more people! Hope i help

      Exactly.. I think most people are looking for something they can learn or benefit from.. say if you start a cooking fan page + personal blog.. and update new recipe 2 times a week you would get plenty of people who love cooking in matter of time.. interaction and networking is huge.

    It's a lot easier to have people chasing you down - and believe me, it does happen. I have the maximum number of friends and another 500 or so that I can't approve because of the limit - and the number keeps growing every day.

    It's all about the content you post, how regularly you post it, and the interaction this content evokes from your current friends. People go where the activity is - if it's on your profile then more people will come and want to be a part of it.

    And it's the same principle you should be using with fan pages...
