Paul Myers I Want To Know What You Came Up With...

Hi Warriors,

I have been reading Need To Know by Paul Myers for half the day, and I am absolutely stunned by how much information this man gives for nothing.

But on page 102 it has this...

#1: I was in Tampa for a brainstorming session that included some extremely sharp folks. One
of them asked "How would you take this $39 product and turn it into a package that's actually
worth $1500 in real value?"
In a half hour, using just these strategies, we did it.
He suggested that he'd probably sell the resulting product for around $400.
The increased cost of delivery is about $10. He'll get 10 times the price, and the customer will
get 40 times the value.
Not a bad deal for anyone
Now I want to know what they came up with.

If anybody knows please point me in the right direction.

Paul if you are reading this... Thanks for everything. Now tell me!

It sounds like they took a digital product and printed it (so the $10 charge could be postage).

Printed products usually have a higher perceived value.

Or what they did was :

    take an ebook
    convert it into videos
    audios
    get interviews of experienced people

give away a lot of bonuses and boom 10X the value

Well that would be the most obvious way but how does it increase the value by 40 times just by reading it on paper?

Here is what I am thinking... feel free to throw in your own brainstorming ideas.

    1. Include Screen capture/video DVDs or Audio CD discussing and showing key points.

    2. Interviews with experts based upon set topics or chapters within the ebooks, once again supplied as an audio CD or DVD.

    3. Private members area, with bonus materials and a dynamic discussion point on the topics discussed.

    I know I'm missing a lot... probably why I wasn't invited

I know how you feel. It's pretty scary huh? And I don't get why. I mean, the guy comes over as pretty nice right? (ok, maybe he's not nice to the 'not nice' people but that's just the way it should be :p)

    Hannah,

I didn't get into the specifics of that example for a couple of reasons. One, it wasn't a public meeting and it wouldn't be appropriate to detail it. It's not anything particularly unusual or secret, but it was generated in private.

The second, and more important, is that people tend to take anything that complete and try to duplicate it, rather than using the concept to create something to fit their own resources, skills and work process. When that happens, they usually either don't do it at all, because it looks too difficult, or they don't do it right.

John and Andy have it exactly right. You're seeing it here. The Thud Report gives more details, but everything you need is in that book.

by the sounds of it, it's repurposing the original content, which not only saves you loads of time on creation of products it gives content in different ways so that you can capture the full spectrum of the way people learn.

for instance, start with a 60 minute free webinar.

turn the webinar into a mp3.

turn the mp3 into an audio book.

turn the audio book into a printed book.

    turn the content into videos.

have "freebies" by adding in things in all those products from newbies who want to get exposure and will let you add their content with yours for free.

turning the content into a series.

there's all kinds of ways to repurpose a product when what you start with is very good.

      Hi Raquel,

I am also from Chicago...Nice to have another one of us here.

Paul's Thud report is not really about reusing content. It's really more about how to expand on the value of an existing product, but it is also about perceived value and how to maximize the perceived value, so that you can increase your price point. It's a good read, and if I recall correctly, pretty cheap.

Paul does put out some great stuff... some of which I read
several times and mark up. He makes you think

For those who don't see how you can easily increase the
value of an item, consider that the value is in the eyes of
the beholder. The exact same piece of information can
be worth 1/10th the asking price to one person, and
1000 times the asking price to another.

    Great discussion though.

Not a bad deal for anyone
Now I want to know what they came up with.
I don't know specifically about THIS instance, no.

But is it strange to me alone that "adding value" is defined in
most comments by "making available in other formats" - and
    little else?!

Yes, you can take a print book and turn it into an audio
book, a video presentation, a slideshow, an animated flick
or more - and yes, it does provide SOME value... but 40x
    more?!

Here are some ideas to enhance value:

    * focus the content on a SPECIFIC NICHE, where the same
content is worth MUCH MORE to the audience (e.g. "time
management" for CEOs, or "sleep better" for pilots)

    * teach the why and the how - and sell a ready-made
SOLUTION which saves them time and money executing
your plan. Create a software program, or train a
team, who can execute the steps, and point them out
    to your clients

    * bundle in other extras, like scripts and resources
that simplify and streamline parts of the plan, give
material to use as 'grist to the mill', throw in a
modicum of personal coaching (even if in the form of
a step-by-step action plan to follow, with occasional
    questions-and-answers sessions thrown in)

    * offer critiques and reviews of progress as the
buyer takes action on your plan - to let them know
if they're going the right direction. The bonus for
you is that you'll only be working with people who
    work your plan

    * include "specialist" material e.g. legal forms and
contracts, proven sales letters or copy, high quality
graphics, videos, ad banners etc. - which would cost
a buyer a huge multiple to have created by himself.

    * offer contact details (or better still, introductions)
to people who can open doors for a buyer in the area
of the product's focus e.g. a list of TV broadcasters
or newspaper/magazine reports who welcome personal
contact can make a nice addition for a PR or publicity
    course)

Just a few ideas off the top of my head that might
enhance value by 40x (or even 400x)

    All success

I like to run instructional videos in the background while I write. 80% of most videos is crap I don't care about. When I hear something that catches my interest, I flip windows and back up a little.

I can't do that with an ebook.

And the ability to do this increases my productivity, so it has value to me. If you sell me just an ebook, I need to factor in not only the inconvenience of having to access it in one specific way, but the opportunity cost of what I could have been doing instead.

To expand on your idea, Mani:

*IF you can, lazer-target a niche then find a prominent name in it and see if they will do a Q&A for your clients. Off the top of my head, if I could make a product for say, How To Pitch Your Ideas and Increase Your Sales, and could get Billy Mays (if he were still around) to do a Q&A on a webinar for struggling salesmen, wouldn't that in itself be a huge boost?

*Step-by-step guides are awesome, but how about Teamviewing on your customers computer to ENSURE they're doing it RIGHT? Teamviewer is a free software, and can connect you to anyone else who has it. Takes coaching to a whole new level at that point.

Just a few things I thought of.

And of course, Paul, everything is PG around here. At least until Riley and his hamsters show up.

Sean, teamviewer is great for so many purposes, and it can be used to greatly enhance the value of certain products and services. The basic version is completely free to use (which I quite frankly find absolutely amazing), and as long as the task on teamviewer doesn't require too much time, using it could easily let you justify raising the price by ten times or more (just as in the example given by Paul) and yet have customers very happy to pay that premium.

Exactly, Paulie! There are no shortage of people in IM, Real Estate, Investing, Web Design, Graphic Design, PPC, and many other Niches who would love to have that real, true, over the shoulder coaching provided to them. It's an idea to promote more than what most offer.

When I hear over the shoulder coaching, I usually think of "I'm going to be on the phone with this guy, and after a certain point, he will be charging me hundreds of dollars, and what if I can't find what I'm supposed to do or do it correctly? He has no way of seeing what I'm doing."

BAM! Teamviewer. You say these 'income streams' take ten minutes to set up? Hell, make sure it takes between 10-20 if the person pays that premium. And make sure they know how to do it again, and again.

        Problem solved. Money made.

Sean, this over the shoulder experience is especially invaluable when dealing with computer issues/activities that are hard to describe over the telephone. In this case, a short over the shoulder coaching session is literally worth more than a million words over the telephone!

Troubleshooting computer issues (a BIG industry now where companies like Best Buy and Fry's are pushing service/maintenance plans) are an especially natural fit for Teamviewer.

If you open your eyes a little, you'll see that almost any activity performed on a computer can be supervised/coached and monitored via Teamviewer, and if you know how do to any of these activities well, then these are potential income streams staring at you right in the face!

And to think, Teamviewer was made to be just that, a way to view your team on a game! The concepts are endless to what can be done. Once I feel my animation skills are up to par, I may offer that as a service to people. Giving them my training videos, then offering them the ability to have me watch what they do and help troubleshoot if the models/textures/animations are off.

Perhaps we should stop talking about this so openly, Paul, we might give the members of this forum some ideas.

Besides, you don't have to know how to do anything well, you just have to know more about what is going on than the guy who is asking you to help him.

Sean, the possibilities are truly endless, and you're right, we should quit jabbering on and on about this and stop giving people so many ideas on what to do with Teamviewer...

You're right, you don't need to be the ultimate expert on a topic or software in order to offer help, we just need to know enough to be able to help in a meaningful way! This brings to mind how I always get asked by close friends and sometimes even friends of friends to troubleshoot seemingly trivial issues on their computers...in my mind, it may be trivial and easily resolved, but in their minds it's a huge, daunting task that they dare not touch with a 10 foot pole!

Now just think if you charged $10 per time someone asked you something about that.

That's a good slice of money every day, if you get 10-20 problems a day, which should be cake if you're doing it online with Teamviewer. Someone in this forum could well be on their way to a $6000/month business model simply from that alone.

$10 would be the deal of a lifetime to just about anyone, as they know they'd probably have to pay at least ten times as much just to have some big-name store start looking at what's wrong with their computer...lol.

I don't think marketing this type of service would be that difficult at all if you get a little creative with it. Using word of mouth virtually (i.e. though Twitter and Facebook) would be a great way of getting the word out, in addition to using some inexpensive offline marketing.

Not so much an infomercial as letting some new members looking to have a free tool to use to help them create their business.

Sean, I wouldn't even really classify this as drifting off topic, as the original post posed the question about how one would add value to a product, and Teamviewer is certainly a very valid way of doing it.
