how do you verify somebody's list

In JV section, I see lot of people are talking about ad swap or solo ads, etc. Some claim that they have a list of 500 while others claim a bigger list (12K).

My question is how do you verify that? what if they only have 12, and not 12K? :-)

    If they are on a public server like Yahoo Groups, easy.

    Otherwise, I would also be interested in knowing.

      EVEN if they go into there account and show you over skype or something, there's still a little problem...

      How did they get that list... There are lots of people using BH tactics out there.

        I use SafeSwaps to find ad swap partners. Nice because they verify the list for me and there is reputation and feedback generated by others who have swapped with them.

        Before SafeSwaps, I used to ask them for the url where their list was build and then I would check the Alexa ranking. If someone tells me they have a list of 50,000 and the signup url has an Alexa ranking of 1 million plus, it tells me they are lying.

    I know folks are going to jump on and say it can be faked, but you could ask for a screen shot of the person's User Control Panel (or dashboard or whatever their list provider calls it).

    I'm using aweber terms here, but it gives you all the lists and the totals. They could block whatever they wanted for privacy.

    You could also ask them to skype with you and share their desktop once they have logged into their list provider to show you their totals. Just a couple ideas.

    I think this is a good question and I would also like to know if there is a way to "verify" the list count. In an ideal world, we should be able to "trust" a business person when they say that have a list of 12000 subscribers. But we all know this is not an ideal world.

    If I approached for an adswap and I don't know the new partner I always suggest a like for like click through arrangement. So you can mail part of your list and the new partner can do the same and only proceed once new partner has matched the volume.

      If their list fits my target criteria, I would accept the risk. The cost of customer acquisition is still relatively minimal. You're really never going to find an exact match anyway.

    I also agree with SafeSwap i have been a member for a while and has worked really well for me.

    But as i match clicks with swaps i am not really bothered what the size of someones list is, what matters is how many unique clicks they give me.

      Safe Swaps seems to be the way to go on this one...

      But there's still an issue with Safe Swaps when you want to broadcast to multiple lists (for ex. Aweber let's you do that) then you can't verify all your lists. You might have a list of 1,000, another with 3,000 subscribers and a third with 2,000. Added up that's 6,000 total subscribers that you have no way of verifying with Safe Swaps.

      There really isn't a perfect way to find out if someone tells the truth about their list size...
      But you can still sniff out scammers with a couple of simple steps:
      Like Garland suggested above, check out Alexa rankings, if your potential adswap partner claims to have a big list (e.g. 10,000+) the Alexa ranking on the particular domain name must be low.

      Another way to go with this is to look for info about the person, do a search on Google, sign up to his/her list, if he/she is a serious business person, you'll probably find a blog, a Twitter or Facebook account. If you find bogus info on him, like angry people talking on forums like the Warrior Forum, how bad a business person your target really is then you found your answer.

      Ultimately, if you have any doubts about a certain person, you can always ask for the public's opinion on the Warrior Forum and I'm sure those who have done business with that person will gladly 'stick their neck out' for him or she.
