Do you think you can build a niche website around a small town and make money off of it?

Have you done it?

I'm really great at making personal connections, etc. I seem to have difficulty building niche websites. I'm thinking that if I can use my personable skills to actually meet business owners, I may be able to take it somewhere. Thoughts?

Yes, I believe that you can.

Have I done it yet? Ask me again in about six months. I am still looking for the domain name now.

Yes, it is being done, and yes I have done it - (inthe[nameofcity].com). Try to get the chamber of commerce on first - they will help get your businesses listed. You sell advertising space to the local businesses by making a one page webpage for them on a city directory. This gives basic info w/graphics about the business - products, address, phone number hours of operation, etc and a link to their main website (which you build for them as well). We charge up to $200/month for the directory website plus a monthly retainer for their website. I just went through the local yellow pages for leads. You can outsource the technical parts of web site building. It does take a lot of offline grunt work to start, but once it's up and running, it's basically on autopilot!

I have to outsource the website part of it, because I hate that stuff.

It's definitely something you can do and that is being done. You can get creative and branch out from just making a more general site for your town, too... there are a lot of different ways you can serve your local area with a website (think different kinds of businesses, things tourists would look for, etc..).

    Yes of course you can.

My opinion would be to make a site about news or events of things going on in your area, then sell ad space to local businesses. And when I say ad space, be creative, there's many ways you could go about it.

Building a list from the site, selling adspace for email broadcasts, banners on the site, etc.
