Your Experience Writing About Disgusting or Controversial Topics(?)

I've noticed quite an interesting trend with the traffic gained to many of my newest articles. The more disgusting or controversial they are, the more traffic they seem to garner. Case in point: I recently wrote a series of articles revolving around the necessary, but inherently disgusting, procedure of expressing a dog's an@l glands.

What have YOUR experiences been with writing these types of articles? It would appear to me that there is a huge market for this subject matter (especially informational "how-to" articles), yet, because of the subject matter, there is a bit of a void in knowledge because writing about it may simply make people uncomfortable.

You know, I never really considered this before, but I think you have a good point here. Although I've not had to write many disgusting or controversial articles, I've certainly read some from time to time- especially controversial articles. I think that a lot of people turn to the internet for this kind of information, either out of curiosity or necessity, especially if it's something they'd be ashamed or too shy to find out about in public (like in a library, by asking someone in person, etc.)

The internet allows people to get the information they need, but while preserving their anonymity. The internet's also teaming with information that sparks people's interest, because if an article is about a strange or controversial topic, they just can't help but read it out of curiosity. Whenever I stop by Yahoo News, for example, sometimes I end up clicking on articles with bizarre titles or strange topics just to see what they're about. I can't help myself.

I think you're probably spot-on with the "how to" articles genre as far as this goes. I mean, if *I* suddenly needed to know about the procedure of "expressing a dog's an@l glands," (yikes!) I'd probably do a Google search to find out about it; most people would probably start with that. It makes me think that there could potentially be something of a market for people who don't mind writing about controversial or cringe-worthy topics, because it's not likely that there would be a shortage of people to read them.
