Need Good Post Excerpts Plugin that does not use excessive bandwidth - Any ideas?

I recently installed a plugin on 2 of my sites called "thumbnail-for-excerpts"

It did what we wanted and only showed a short portion of each post on the home
page, but then a couple of days later our hosting account was suspended due
to excessive bandwidth usage.
That was the only information that we could find out.

We know that it was not due to traffic as we dont have much.

Since uninstalling this plugin we have not had further bandwidth problems
and we never had them previously either.

So I am nervous to again install this plugin.

Does anyone have any ideas of another such plugin that will only display a
portion of the posts with a link to "Click to read more" or similar?

I know I can just search Google, but am nervous to just try anything.
I would prefer to go on a recommendation from a tried plugin by another
forum member.
