What to say to the "NAy Sayers"

I'm sure we've all ran across the people who tell us to get a real job, go to college, and all that good stuff. What do you guys tell them? (Other than F off.)

    I believe a question along this line was asked last week regarding family saying the same thing.

    My family, and friends, don't say much of anything to me because it's clear I make more money than they do. When I'm driving a more expensive car than you, what CAN you say about what I do for a living?

    lol. Funny stuff. What about when you are just starting out and aren't making a killing online? A lot of people respect me for being adventurous, and they think it's cool. But every once in a while you feel like they look down upon you. I guess those people aren't worth your time.

      Just wait, keep working hard and the tables will turn eventually. Then you can say something to them like, "I would love to work where you do, but I just couldn't afford the pay cut".

    Get up real close to them and just stare into their eyes. I mean like uncomfortably close... millimeters away. Not only will they never again make snide remarks about what you do, it's very likely they'll never say another word to you. They may even run when they see you coming. Everybody wins!

    I tell'em I'm glad they don't believe this stuff works. If everyone believed in IM the playing field would fill up a lot quicker, and then who would our customers be? I would hate it if all my visitors were marketing savvy.

    We all go through this. I have supported myself online for over two years now. Strangely, I don't have people telling me to get a job anymore. Instead they ask me to show them what I do. I normally don't because most people do not have the nerve to get out there and do anything on there own.

    The thing that I tell people is, I have calculated how much I have made the people that I worked for. I figured that it is 3 to 8 times what they paid me. It just doesn't make sense for me to continue doing that. Why not work a third of the time or less and get paid the same amount? That way I can spend my team doing what is important to me. If the person that you are talking to is intelligent, this answer usually makes sense.

    I have no problem with admitting that it's sometimes a struggle, but I've impressed most of them with what I do earn and my dedication, and I'm not a top earner by any means.

    I had issues with people who didn't approve of my working at home when I had a work at home job rather than an online business. Even when I had a paycheck from that job, they were convinced I was somehow being taken advantage of. It was a pretty good job, but I so love my business better, and the pay is often better.

    The best is simply outlasting the skeptics' skepticism. It's fun taking people from "isn't that a scam?" to "How can I do that?"

        It's easy enough for those who are established and already successful to tell the nay sayers to "f off," but what about those people who are just starting out? Isn't it often newbies who meet the most resistance from those around them? What did you guys say when you were just starting out and didn't have the bank accounts or cars to show people?

        For the most part, I've just kept pretty quiet about what I'm doing so I don't have to explain myself and be met with the usual onslaught IMers seem to get. I'm not full-time so even though I've been in this a while, I still consider myself to be a "newbie." I'll tell people more about what I do when it's all that I do, but does anyone have a suggestion for what to say other than just not really getting into it?

          I kept kind of quiet and didn't really share what I was doing with my friends and family at first.

          Within two years I was able to walk away from my job.

          Luckily my family was very supportive. They knew I hated my job and had a terrible boss.

          Have people really been negative -or- is that what you think might happen. You would be surprised at how many people I meet who tell me that they would love to quit their job and earn a full-time income online.

          No matter what...just keep pushing and you will make it!

            Here's what no one tells you about going to college:

            You spend 4 years paying $10,000/year OR MORE (one of my friends tuition is $40,000/year).

            You get out of college and most likely wont be able to find a job in your field for at least a few years.

            When you finally get a job, you get offered $65,000/year if you are lucky...

            You spend 10 years trying to get to $75,000/year.

            Meanwhile if you took that $40,000-$160,000 you invested in your college tuition, and those 4 years worth of time building up your own business, you'll most likely have a Million dollar per year business.

            Let the suckers who think college is the route to financial freedom do their thing....

          Don't tell them everything, but give them enough to stop asking questions. For instance, if you sell products online you don't need to tell them that you use adwords or buy adspace, or sell digital products from Clickbank. Just tell them that you have a business that sells products online and try and leave it at that. They will usually ask if you sell on Ebay. Just kind of laugh and say its wayyy more complicated than that. That used to work for me.

          As I read your comment I remember a few times when a couple people would really get under my skin. I couldn't get rid of them, and they made things really uncomfortable for me. It was worse when they did it in front of other people. Looking back, these people were really a blessing though. I mean that because it made me really focus more on being successful.

          There are plenty of things that you can tell people. You work online from home, you own a business, or your a day trader (I trade forex every so often...).

            BTW, before peeps go crazy...

            I dont think college is entirely worthless.

            If you are going to be a doctor, engineer, teacher, programmer, etc. It has it's purpose.

            However if you are going for things like business management, 'advertising', 'communications' and crap like that under the misguided idea that you will become wealthy, it's a complete waste of time.

    I'd take a guess that most IMers stay pretty quiet about what they do... until the PayPal account starts to fill up.
    I used to try to explain (briefly) only to watch their eyes glaze over within a minute. It's like most other jobs... difficult to understand for anyone who's not doing it. And that's okay.

      Watching the eyes glaze over was part of the fun.

      Sometimes strangers would ask, and I'd glance around and ask them, in a low voice, "before I tell you, are you a cop?"

    Some of my friends think my business is a joke or at least they act like it is. I work for my dad and in the mean time i'm trying to grow my own business. I don't care what anyone thinks anymore I just do my own thing and I am very confident I will accomplish my goals.
