The Dark Side of Marketing

Hey, guys.

I'm pretty new at all this so I was wondering if you could tell me what marketing techniques NOT to engage in. I'm talking about techniques that don't work, too, but I'm mostly talking about techniques that are unethical and can get me in trouble with Google or get me sued. I wanna know which techniques to avoid so I know to avoid anyone who recommends any of them. Obviously I know spamming is one to avoid, but what else is there?

Thanks. guys.

Maybe I am inebriated now so don't take it otherwise but why don't you focus on what works and slog for it rather than actually spending time trying to know about what you shouldn't be doing?

Most people stick to learning abusive words of a new language they want to learn and stop at that. Don't let Internet Marketing suffer the same fate as a 1/4th learned language by focusing on the negatives.

Well, enough ramble that. In a nut shell, anything black hat can get your softer rear side kicked. Google is the bully.

I would suggest that you start by researching the method of marketing online you want to do by doing a search in the Warrior Forum. Read the replies to posts about your search, and you will be able to learn what other warriors are doing that is all above board and is making money for them. Once you have done that, all you need to do is commit to the long hours and hard work to make it happen.

I think common sense is a really good indicator... If you do things just to cheat, manipulate or provide garbage, either for google or your JV partners or affiliates then this is what I would class as the dark side of IM and you will pay the price eventually.

By practicing the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" your buisness will grow and you can sleep at night.

    Hope that helps,

Yep, if it seems wrong, it probably is wrong. Online is not so different than operating out of a building or brick and mortar as folks say. People don't want garbage and they don't want to be scammed. People want value and honesty. If people feel like they were tricked into coming to your site or feel dissatisfied after making a purchase they are likely to never come back. It is better to create a situation where people want to come back again and again.

    OP,

One thing you have to avoid is FEAR, I guess.

Your post is a pointer that you are afraid of failure, success, making mistakes...

Nobody makes it in a business like that.

So, first of all, avoid fear.

Secondly, read the forum rules and follow it. Use the search button to get as much information as much, particularly information about your area of interest in IM.

    Welcome to the forum.

What does fear have to do with it? How does my question point to me being afraid of failure, success, or mistakes? Again, I want to avoid unethical marketing practices and people who recommend them. How does that betray a fear of any of those things? How can a person simultaneously be afraid of failure AND success? What I'm afraid of - if anything - is getting a bad reputation.

You should be concerned with both but more in particular the latter. Just make sure everything you do is quality and the stuff you are selling is something you as a customer would be happy to buy.

Don't lie and don't spam to get sales - the people you work with will ultimately determine the level of your success so don't screw up any good relationships to make a quick sale.

Dont engage on any type of marketing that says you will get the benefit so quickly.I think anything like this type of marketing is unethical.

Don't tell the truth, especially if you KNOW the customers don't want to hear it. Never actually sell anything. Don't use and email or http technology and you should be just fine. (Do I need to mention when I am being sarcastic?:rolleyes

(When I was selling cars, after around 1985 or so, lawyers started to advertise that it was IMPOSSIBLE to complete an automobile transaction without breaking at least 3 state and Federal laws. That was probably 'close' to reality. The laws concerning auto sales were written so 'loosely' they could be interpreted in several different ways. IF you were 'targeted' by any law enforcement body, IF you actually did sell cars, you were probably in violation (technically) off some law or another. Same (IMO) seems to now be true of selling on the internet.)

If you follow your gut,and/or get a good coach, (like that, ^ guy * Andy*, if he offers coaching), don't do anything to anyone that would bother you if it were done to you and you should be OK. (SHOULD being the operative word). Prison is full of innocent people and criminals walk the streets... but it is still worth operating an 'ethical' business on-line. (Even if it does break a few 'legal' rules - like I said, almost impossible to not walk a few lines in business and you are bound to step across it once or twice, if only to keep your balance). Preachy enough?

Wurmwood, the big things to stay away from:

    1. Spam
    2. Lying
    3. SEO tactics the search engines prohibit (read their terms)
    4. Plagiarism/theft of intellectual property

Those are the big things that come to mind quickly. You'll learn as you go there are a lot of little things. If you just try to deliver value in an honest and ethical way you'll be fine.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
