Making my site Sticky

I just wondered if any warriors had any tips for making my site sticky. We have 20k registered users but they dont return to the site as frequently as we would like. The site is a hobbies and interests social network that connects users based on their interests. Any ideas to get them to return regularly.

Currently we send out an email notification if someone messages you in the site or adds you as a friend etc but we dont want to spam the users to get them back.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    This is the issue all users face, I think less than 1% of forumers are still active after 1 year, if you can crack this code I think you will be a very rich man lol

    You could try doing a forum project, such as getting everyone to help you make the worlds biggest LEGO or sticky back plastic structure to get you in to the Guinness Book of Records...

    Either you do it by building a targetted-niche community or by offering incentives applicable to their hobbies.
