Do People Judge You For Your Niche?

... My niche - well, one of them, because I have several - is relationship related.

Before I even had a "signature" on the forum, the site was in my profile, and I've gotten several PMs and messages that make some really unfair assumptions about what my site is about - or what my "philosophy" is ... and now I've gotten another PM about whether or not someone agrees with "my point of view"...

It's a website.
My personal philosophy is not what half the people approaching me even think it is. Really.

Do you have a niche or focus in your business people jump to conclusions on?

Well, actually, whatever online marketing form I do people have their own assumption about Internet marketing being shady and me doing scams all day and night .

But I just ignore these remarks and do my own thing - I am the creator of my success and future.

This is pretty much what it comes down to, in my opinion. We can't let other people derail us!

Amazing to me someone on a forum would assume you care whether they agree with the point of view on YOUR website.

Judging someone by the niches they work in is about as shallow as you can get....right up there with trusting people because you like their avatar picture

That in and of itself should allow people to have a little more of an open mind but I see your point :-D

          Exactly Phoebe!

I believe in the topic, but my personal belief isn't discussed on the topic. My niche that I'm talking about is "cheating men". People are PMing me to tell me they don't agree with what I think about men... when I have never said anything ABOUT what I think about men. LOL. The site's name just says "He Cheated on Me". . . so unless you're the "He" feeling a certain way... why attack me? LOL ....

I talk about how men cheat for different reasons ... about how women cheat because of double standards... about saving marriages... I mean I just write and talk... I am not somewhere discussing how to slice him into pieces because all men cheat! I'm in a relationship with a man... and LD Carter has known me way before I knew we were both on WF... I'm not the run of the mill "self-victimizing man hater" people approach me as... so basically if you can take my signature and get THAT interpretation, you're NOT paying attention lol.... that's all.

I talk about learning to understand WHY your husband cheats.... as well as how to heal yourself afterwards. My personal philosophy says there's at least 2 types of cheaters - those who do just because and those who are missing something. Personally, if you do it "just because" then there's nothing to discuss about you... so you're not really even mentioned on my site! I'm talking about the ones who felt compelled to do what they did... but this isn't romance class this is WF!

Sorry, Lauryn, didn't mean anything by messing around a little bit. Your point is very valid, especially online. I think people have a tendency to make decisions about us based on niches or personas or even what we write when we might be having a difficult day.

I find it much easier to develop different aspects of myself in the different niches I am in.
Lol, you're fine, I'm pretty laid back.

I tried to write adult content about six months ago. Had an order for 100 articles - 400 words - $18 each. They weren't overly explicit but hit the high points so to speak.

Problem? After writing ten articles I was bored out of my mind. I had told the buyer up front I didn't know if I could do it or not - and I couldn't. It ended well as a few weeks later the buyer learned she could not use the articles as planned so she would have paid for nothing.

I was angry at myself - but realized I'd also be bored writing tons of articles about football plays and that IS a spectator sport.

            kay

EDIT: Typo - 100 - not 1000 articles - I couldn't write 1000 on any one topic for any amount of money!
I would have taken the challenge, but after making the first 100 on Ezines HAHD I'd be overwhelmed... there is too much of a good thing. :p

No matter if everything you say is right.... no matter if you help 10,000 people... no matter if you go above and beyond the call of duty....

There's always going to be 33% of the people who will try and bring you down.

It used to get to me... but now I almost enjoy it - makes me feel a lot more successful lol

Even though we say it does not hurt, in a way it does, well i will be honest it gets to me a little, after a years of being committed to helping and you only need to replying to one post, and some one will pre judged you, write twisted words, make unsubstantiated claims and totally mis represented the purpose or intentions of the post.

I suppose some times no matter how careful you step, there is always a piss pot puddle your going to step in.

Do People Judge You For Your Niche?
    Yes.

It's human nature. We all judge somebody for something.

Yes, person reading this and shaking your head NO, you do it too.

I've already read, today, on this very forum, two separate cases of an individual judging another based on their choice of niche.

All you can do is ignore them. Just like you would if somebody were judging you because of the shoes you're wearing... I mean really, they are awful.

I never get judged for my niches, because my real name (as here) and my niches have no visible connections (well, apart from with one product I endorse, but that isn't really one of "my niches" anyway, and I don't even build a list for it ).

But I know that if people did judge me for my niches at all, some would say, for the most part: "Who'd have thought she'd have such boring niches?" or maybe even "Who'd have thought there was money in that niche?"

This sounds pretty out of line, to me: I wouldn't be too pleased.

I do admit that I might occasionally "judge others for their niche", though: I do wince a lot when I see people promoting alternative medical niches in a way which may discourage truly sick people from seeking the medical attention they urgently need, because I think that's really reckless. Having said that, I can't actually think of another example, though ...

I refuse to answer medical questions for this very reason and get irritated when I find people doing in on places like Yahoo answers...or even worse, giving very bad advice.

People should NOT be answering questions like this or promoting certain products unless they have specialist knowledge, but that is merely my take on the situation

(Every medical question I get asked I merely point them to somewhere that is at least has a doctor on it, like medhelp.com)

I try not to judge but it's not really an issue for me because if I don't agree to the subject of the site, I just don't go there.

And, I'm one of those paranoid people who thinks that no matter what pen name I use, I'm still visible to the internet world. Weird, huh?

But going back to your question, no, people don't judge me because I have a very safe and generic website.

I do hope to be braver someday and venture out to other areas.

Telling people how to pick up romantic partners in the field? You're guilty of destroying the wholesome fabric of the family, cheapening the meaning of love, and objectifying men/women.

Telling people how to get healthy with alternative medicine? You're a snake oil salesman, depriving people of real medical care they need.

Telling people how to recognize serious symptoms and go see a doctor? You're guilty of perpetuating the unethical lies and greed of the modern medical and insurance industries, who just want to keep you sick and paying.

Telling people how to get fit doing just about anything? You're guilty of failing to tell them that the One Real Truth is that the only way to *actually* get really fit is this other thing that *I* endorse.

Telling people how to lose weight? God help you. You're guilty of giving out poor dietary advice...you're guilty of failing to properly address the role of fitness...you're guilty of damaging people's health...you're guilty of perpetuating dangerous and unattainable stereotypes...you're guilty of crippling already fragile self images...you're guilty of objectifying men/women (again)...and you're probably guilty of arson, grand larceny, high treason, and God knows what else.

But since I clearly knew far too much about these things, she didn't want me as her writer anymore. See, nobody could possibly know that unless they were into that sort of thing themselves, you know.

Wikipedia has a disambiguation page for the term. You want the (BDSM) variety.

It will lead you to another disambiguation page, which is the border between just some potentially shocking language and some very definitely NSFW images.

The clientele she didn't want to serve was men. It should be clear from this disambiguation page that if you're not selling toys for men, this doesn't belong in your store.

If you're bound and determined to know the details, you can probably figure out you don't want to know about the band. Click through on the (sexual practice) variety, and you'll find the parachute described midway down the page.

It's difficult to give details to the curious without getting filthy.

      chest or medal? J/K

I've promoted all kinds of things. I remember my friends used to give me a hard time for shilling twilight posters and stand-ups. They quickly shut up after they realized that is how I made a down payment on my car.

If people want to judge me they are more than welcome to. For those that disagree with what I promote on a personal level, they can honestly kiss my ass. As I tell religious people who just want to argue their point... "Who ever said I wanted to go to YOUR heaven?"

Personal taste, morality, ethics. It's all so dynamic. I promote what makes money AND I sleep mighty comfortably at night...

Bein hit on all the dadgum time. Gettin so many personal messages that it would choke a horse. Folks wantin me to send em pictures of myself. People climbin over my barbed war fence tryin to get at me (don't get no fancy ideas bout what I just said cause I can clip a flys wing at 600 yards whilst he's turned away from me with my Sharps Big Fifty... an that's if I been hittin the shine. Sober I reckon I could do it at 1000 yards).

Anyhew, I was thankin I would just add my three cents to this here conversation. I just ask that you not be hatin me cause I'm beautiful!

Lauryn - In my excitement about your red clown noses and applesauce niche idea, I temporarily forgot that some people judge us for our niches. I guess that rules me out of any niche to do with clown noses since I have no sense of humor and I don't have really big feet. I don't even have one of the bulb horns. I suppose I could get one, but I can't grow my feet.

Oh, oh ... bulb horns and applesauce! That might be a viable alternative.

Well one thing which is for sure is that people will always judge others whether because of their or something else. That is just human nature and there is pretty much nothing you can do about it. So I say just be yourself and do your thing. Haters will always be haters and judges will always be judges(not the judges in court lol)

So bottom line is forget about what people say and focus on your goals and celebrate your achievements.

No matter the niche, as your presence expands you run into resistance.

Some people can share their viewpoint in a tactful manner and some others are unhappy with their lives and will down you for living your own life. Leave these people behind. Remember, their judging has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them so try not to take it personally because it never is.

Your feelings are a mirror. The person who judges is judging themselves.
