Creating JV Product from Interview

Hey guys,

I've decided that I should stop writing my 300-page book for my first online product and instead focus my attention now on smaller, but high-quality products (like 3 or 4 of them) that I can get out and MARKET ASAP.

Just got blasted in a hit and run car accident and had no collision insurance, so now I need something in addition to my martial arts academy to pay off my massive Ivy League grad school bills (at UPENN now).

However, I figured I'd ask knowledgeable people before I go off and do anything too soon.

QUESTION 1:

I was looking to interview a few BIG NAME Mixed Martial Arts guys, and basically build a product off of my quick interview. I'll be doing all the work and using their insight to build a framework for success in combat sport for my customers.

^^ What kind of a "cut" would I be doing here? I once heard that only 50/50 deals are viable, but literally I'll be doing 100% of the marketing, writing, etc... What's my best bet?

QUESTION 2:

There aren't many skill acquisition/goal setting/"self development-ish" products in the Mixed Martial Arts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world, so I'm not sure what is really going to be selling to people out there... how might I go about testing what might sell so I can start building TODAY?

I appreciate the perspective big time, catch you guys soon!

  • You could be on to a winner. If you go to click bank for example all the top performing products over time are real products, not IM related products, the do well because they are hyped for a couple of months and then fall away but real products like yours in a tight niche stay popular becuae real affiliates can target the niche as long as you give them the right tools.

Only reservation is martial arts, can it be taught in some way remotely?

The biggest problem/advantage you'll face with non-marketers is they are generally pretty risk averse. They'll massively under value their time if you pay them but massively over value their time if you offer them a cut.

Eg If you approach this guy for 2 hours of his time and offer him $200 he'll probably think you're nuts and agree in a heart beat.

On the other hand, if you approach him with an 80/20 split deal he'll be worried about getting nothing for his time and push for 50/50.

If you're going to do an equity split approach you need to have a sound plan in place to show how much they are likely to make.

Otherwise make it easier on yourself and pay for the guys time and worry about the risk yourself.

I'm glad you see some potential. The martial art is not being taught online, I am planning to teach training methods and goal setting strategies to make training more effective (help people get good fast).

    Andy:
I have talked to the guy before for nothing (interviewing for a past book), but because I'll be using HIS name on the thing it seems like I have to pay him something here... Should I just tell him "Hey with this particular interview I'm thinking of creating a product based on your insight with your name on it and give you $100 bucks for your time with me today."
^ Is that rational? I might only talk to the guy for 30 minutes and create the entire product from there... Maybe I'll tell him that I'll pay him, and then send him the product and if he LIKES it I can have him do a video for me to use to promote it?

Let me know what you think! Thanks very much guys,

Whoops sorry for 2nd post (just thought of this!):

Should I just offer some kind of 50-50 off the bat with this guy JUST to gain the cred of working with him as a big name MMA athlete?

Or maybe the $100 for his time is better.. ><

    Thanks!

Personally I'd be up front with him about the plan and offer him a choice. I'll pay you $x00 for your time or you can have x% royalties on what I make.

If he takes the $x00 and then watches you make $y000 from it he'll be annoyed with himself but he can't hold it against you. Just be clear from the start that whatever you agree BEFORE there is money coming in stands once there is.

That also goes for you. If his only contribution is the upfront interview and use of his name. How are you going to feel a year from now when you're paying him 50% and doing all the work?

I think that you have a great product idea. Interviewees
will likely do the interviewees for nothing. When talking
percentages, you are really talking about how much tor
pay those who can help get your product into the
marketplace. Most of those people will owners of busy
martial arts websites who also have email lists. They will
probably be perfectly with 30-50%. Assuming that it's a
digitally delivered product, or even on delivered on CD/DVD,
your costs will be very low.

One reason you might want to consider CD's/DVD's is that
your could then include promotions for other products inside
the package, or on the disks.

I am a martial artist myself, and have watched leading
instructors struggle with building schools for 3 decades...
so I don't think getting them to do interviews is a problem.

I would consider how difficult even an interview product
would be to do in video... we like to listen to CDs or watch
    DVDs while traveling to events.

    Thanks Andy and thanks Willie.

This guy I'll be interviewing tomorrow is not a struggling school owner but a pretty big deal NCAA wrestling champ and MMA fighter - for all I know he gets approached with this stuff often, not sure though.

I think that I'll go with Andy's idea and leave it up to him to be fair - and basically casually say "yeah I mean I figure I can pay you a bit for you time of if you like, I can do the writing, website stuff, list building, and marketing and you can let me know whatever kind of percentage you would think is fair."

^^ We'll see what he thinks of that. I'm excited to see where it goes because I'm just pumped to create product and sell product online!

I'll let you guys know how it goes tomorrow, thanks for knowledge,
