No, I feel like going back to my 9 to 5 job because I loved working at Microsoft.

But never because I don't like what I do now. There are tradeoffs. In the long run, I think this will be better.

hahahaha I don't need to go back to my normal job because I never left it and even though I almost work like full time being self employed I still have my normal job and I enjoy both very much. But if I was to chose then maybe I will chose to be self employed. But we are not there yet so yuppiiiiiiiiiiii!!!

Well at the moment I still have a 9-5 but hopefully this will be the last year of that. I'd say if you really crave going back to your old job you should and then just IM part time. That's the beauty of it really.

  As people are saying, there are cons of being your own boss as well as pros.
  
  But when the pros of working for yourself include you getting to see your little boy several times a day, and you can just a take time off whenever you feel like it to spend with him, that blasts any cons out of the water.

  A lot of people like full time jobs because of the security it brings.
  
  You can be pretty confident when you wake up in the morning that you will have work to do and get paid for doing it.
  
  There is no uncertainty about whether you’ll make money that day, whether you site will get views, etc.
  
  However, what draws people to self-employment is the fact that there is no cap on the amount of money they can make and they get to keep it all.
  
  Many people like being self-employed because they feel as if they have more control over their future.

If you did had a regular job, what was it? Do you make more now as self-employed than you ever did before?

Strain? What strain?

I make less than when I had a regular job. Well, it depends on how you do the maths.

Before: 16 hours a day, executive lifestyle, stress...
Now: 2-3 hours a day, urban/beach lifestyle, no stress, enjoying life

Making about 50% of what I used to... Planning to scale up in 2011, not scaling up my efforts though. :p

Every day! I really miss the stress, the long hours stuck in the traffic, to be an anonymus underpaid employee, the pressure, the long overtime jobs, the ridiculous deadlines, the ignorant bosses, arrogant bosses, dumb bosses, plain stupid bosses, the business travels away from your love ones, the burden to fight every month to meet the month's end, the feeling to have a dark cloud raining over your head, to leave my house early in the morning when my kids are sleeping, and come back home late at night when my kids are sleeping... yeah, I wish to back to my regular soul crushing job and work hard until I fully drain all my happiness.

I hated my regular job. Some are lucky to have jobs that are rewarding.

I ran a men's suit store, which was fun, but my district manager was a terrible person. I worked for the company for 6 years.

I had accrued 6 weeks vacation and wanted to simply get 2 weeks in a row to go to Greece with a few friends. My boss would not allow me to take more than 7 days in a row.

Life is too short for that sort of BS!

In March of 2009, I was making 150% more online than what my job was paying me. I put in my two weeks notice and it was the best feeling of my life. I can't even describe it.

These days, I can take vacations whenever I want...for how long I want. I took most of August off just to explore the California Coast this year.

The freedom I have blows away most jobs,

Nope, I was (among other things) what you would call a turnaround specialist for failing schools. Lots of pressure, lots of deadlines imposed by other people, and lots of anger and depression among the people I worked with.

I do not miss that at all.

But it gave me kind of perspective on how hard internet marketing is. Which compared to what I used to do, not so hard.

Military... you mean I get real bullets with this and you want me to shoot people... cool.

TV Director... wait, I get to yell at everybody and it's acceptable... interns... yummy.

Internet Marketing... I should swap out this pair of sweats I've been wearing all week for another. Hmm... lets go be a jerk on the WF 'cus I'm bored out of my mind. Check stats... YAY, I made $35! All work an no play makes jack a dull boy. I miss interaction with real people. Check stats again.... YAY, I made another $35! Maybe I'll go wander around Wal-Mart for a couple of hours to kill some time.

Internet Marketing, It's a love hate relationship. I'll take a couple of days behind the counter at Tower.. wait, nevermind... they went out of business years ago. Damn you napster!!!!

I really should change into a fresh pair of sweatpants.

Takes 4-5 hours just to shower and dress. I will need to make close to $500,000.00 in IM just to net what I used to a year. Glad ya asked?

I didn't leave my job - I just downsized. My workplace was closed for a year after Hurricane Katrina. I went back full-time but was spoiled by then - went part-time and then over 2 years ago I cut back to "weekends only".

I work between 8-16 hrs a week which is fine. I'm a casino dealer so it keeps the skills up. The money is great and I like the people I work with - it's a win win for me.

I don't mind being alone for long periods of time - in fact, I like it. Having somewhere I "have to be" a day or two days a week is probably good for me.

Umm...I left my job as a customer service executive about three years back and been a freelance writer since then. Though I earn quite a bit from my writing, I feel keeping a day job is very important unless you are well established in the internet marketing field...The internet can be a bit tricky at times...especially if you are a blogger...

Is not the strain of being self employed bcause you have picked a wrong niche?

It took me awhile to find what I enjoyed working with and what it entailed in respect of amount of time and what I could afford to spend. When I was comfortable with what I could do, and enjoyed doing it, and that it covered the bills then I changed my lifestyle.

The important part is that you enjoy your work. My Father said when I first started work 'if you do not like it, get out and find something that you enjoy'.

Now I would not go back to being employed.

No!

I left my regular job after my second baby born and I never, ever want to return to all that job.

I had a very important position on the company, and if the company needs me at 3 am on the morning, was my duty to be there, they don't pay overtime, my salary was good on that times.

Now I make more money than the general manager on that company, I spend time with my daughters and I manage my time as I wish. Its no way I want to return to it.

Sometimes. I miss the face-to-face human interaction. Oh, wait -- no! I didn't at all like the folks in the office where I worked last. I did like the distributors and reps in the field, though... and thankfully that's who I interacted with mostly.

These days, getting more involved in a business development group for a local historic district is helping to balance out the hours and hours of time spent at the computer in solitude.

In a way yes.

I was working on the Mega-construction projects you sometimes see on discovery channel. They were an amazing thing to be a part of.

I can't go back and do what I used to do because I cannot physically do it anymore. That's the part I actually miss. Physically building something with my own hands and my own strength.

I've worked in different aspects of the construction, but nothing holds my mind like physically placing something that will be there for generations to come.

I can't go back, so I don't even really think about it anymore... I just think about where I'm going.

Unfortunately as an Army Officer my day job back then was more like from 6:30AM to 9PM so nope, I would never want to go back to that.

21 years was more than enough for me and although I do miss the people I worked with I enjoy Internet marketing infinitely more because you can exponentially increase your income and everythign is based on your own merits.

I just got out of the army this past summer! The last 9 months was the worst time of my life mostly due to a general lack in leadership so ultimately I chose to leave instead of extend.

Even though I am on unemployment and probably won't make even half of what I made being army.. I'm sooo much happier being gone. But I def understand missing the people. My one job working at a BDE in S3 was the happiest time in the military to only be shattered by transferring to MP unit that needed some serious help :/

To answer the posters question.. I'm unemployment but def happy to be gone from my last job.

Currently looking for a job.. I would def love to not have a boss and just focus on IM but luckily I've been using my unemployment time to learn about IM so I can do my own.

I was a waiter at a steak house and it SUCKED! I could not go back to that job again that's for sure. I love what I'm doing now. Making way more money, planning all kinds of travelling trips and I even invested some money into gold and silver so to me life is good right now.

Nope.

The biggest thing that drove me nuts was the absolute lack of "fulfillment" I got from the job. I wasn't married to it, and I never felt like I was contributing to anything in the world. Although I somewhat enjoyed the "type" of work, that was about it. It was just a paycheck to me.

Absolutely not.

I was burned out on what I was doing by the time I left my last job. Even though I was good at it, and was doing a worthwhile service for people, I resented being "chained" to doing something that was not my passion.

I'm now working on staying really focused on doing what I'm good at, so I can continue to build my own business to where I want it to be.

I've never had a "regular job" since I'm actually 16 but having responsibilities is what wears on me.

With the given success of internet marketing, I have nearly 5 family members and 4 dogs to take care of plus a $2k mortgage haha.

  One job in particular I'd love to have back - I left it in 1981 to go to Journalism college because the routine had become so tedious. For that reason I would not like to go back, but I would because of the respect, accolades for a job well done, and great people. It was the only place where they finally accepted the fact that I could never be on time. I made up for it - working half hour overtime frequently without being asked and not expecting payment. They had to kick me out at night. I loved that job. But after 10 years, I was ready for something new.
  
  Internet marketing is only fun for me if I'm making money. Otherwise, it's just another job, really, and I'd much rather do other things. D'ya think that might be why I'm not yet a millionaire?
  
  And as much as I do enjoy being alone the majority of the time, I do miss interacting with people. Even though some people I worked with in the past 40+ years turned out to be nasty, nasty people - rumormongers, liars, backstabbers and the like out to get me fired. Not nice. Some actually succeeded, because they knew what buttons to push. But then there were those wonderful people who were so great that I never wanted to go home.

At the start I had many thoughts of going back to a regular job (oh so many). But, I told myself that the rewards of working for myself would far out-weigh the initial, stress, long hours and setbacks.

I finally feel like things are starting to take shape and 2011 is going to be the year that I will be able to remove the thought of going back to a regular job FOREVER!

I have a 8.30 to 5.30 Job as an engineer. But salary is not enough to enjoy my life. So IM is the addon to have an extra income which covers all targets. I don't know whether i will leave from that job or not. It depends with a stable IM income which hit a six figure income

I am making more money now than before. At my regular day job, earning is limited. In IM earning are as long as you want to earn. I have manage my own time for my family and for my self. I make decisions on my own because I am the boss. Since I started learning IM, I wished that it would be my regular job.

Well since I'm a student with a job making double minimum wage in the IT field I'm not gonna leave it anytime soon. But if I could make a hundred bucks a day doing this once I go to college I'll be happy and if I can scale, maybe I went need a full time job.

  My last 'job' was self-employed, but I worked outside doing physical work, mainly for bored housewives, who liked to make me copious amounts of tea and get me chatting all the time.
  
  Of course it had it's downsides as well, but on a typical day online where I encounter things such as typical youtube user commentary or typical IM hyped-up sales spiel I sometimes find myself longing to be swinging a hammer on someone's roof with the squirrels and pigeons for company, or digging the earth with the worms and robins playing out their food-chain drama.
  
  Even in my very pleasant home office with a sea-view, a mini-gym and utter peace and quiet, it's impossible to replicate the benefits of the great outdoors and good, honest graft. It's got something to do with 1000s of years of conditioning.

So whats the life of a full time IM really like ? anyone care to post their weekly/monthly income, the number of hours worked per week and how long it took them to get to this point ?

we all hear about the success stories, people living the high life, but if it was really that easy everyone would be doing it ?

im sure the life of an IM professional is not as easy/glamorous as some people make it to be ?

Don't you see that many immigrants actually enter the IM field b/c they were bullied in the normal job field?

We know that working hard has almost nothing to do with making huge money, a brain worker is always better than a labor, so I won't even enter into the 9-5 job field b/c I don't want to be squeezed by my boss. PLus IM field is just so much fun

Been doing this now for nearly 2 months, I've saved money for 6 months and took the risk. Do I wish to go back to my regular job?

I still love cooking but no way I would ever go back to my old job. I use to be a chef, worked 10-15 hours per day, most weeks i had only a day off, always stressed, no personal life, woke up always tired and working my ass off every single day for an underpaid wage.

I'm still not earning a living from this. Been working long hours, studying alot, but damn atleast I'm working for me and not to make some other guy rich. I know I will succeed because there is no other option

If I ever go back in to having a job is to teach others in how to cook.

Out cutting the lawn one day I realized that working for someone else was putting me in the "slave" category so I, in time, started a business in the same profession and it worked.
I enjoy working online and know and see the potential of it and cannot trade it for anything that is until something else of larger proportion sways me differently.

I think I would love to have my old job back. Sometimes I think that it's all I know. I ran my own Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing firm, but in the last 5 years that work has gone offshore.

Ive been into IM for the last year and I think I'm finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel! It's taken a lot of hard work but more importantly the tutoring I've received (and still continues) has made all the difference in my being able to start profiting from the very start.

I really believe that without it I'd still be looking for my first $1 online.

Bits of it I do.

I was art director for a very large design agency working on clients like Adidas, P&G and Intel. Being part of projects on that scale was a dream and I really miss that whole creative process.

On the other hand there was a load of incompetence and bad management and ridiculous petty office politics. Every day felt like a constant battle. That plus the long hours, horrific commute and actually now I think about the complete lack of gratitude when myself or my team bent over backwards to deliver projects made the choice to leave an easy one.

That plus I know make nearly triple every month I did in my job, being able to do what I want when I want and have complete control over my own projects in the past 12 weeks I also did 2 weeks muay Thai ( thai boxing) in Thailand, 1 week in Spain and 2 weeks in Scotland driving around the highlands and islands (Skye is incredible btw) all whilst running my business from a laptop with 2 guys I outsource work to running the show.

Pretty much living the dream and I ain't going back to the prison of work.

While growing up I wanted to become I hit man. I Think its was all the Arnie and Chuck flicks...

Unfortunately I didn't get to kill people or become a time traveler.

I ended working in more dead end, pain in the ass jobs then probably anyone here and im willing to bet on that. In fact the last time I tried to write a list of all the jobs I had worked I think I got to like 20 before I just forgot the rest.

Although at times I hated my work. They all taught me something.

I still work full time and yes, I hate my f***ing job!

I actually like most of the people I work with and I think I'll miss them.

The reason I have not left yet is because I have a young family and although I make some money online Im not at the level I'd like to be and that would mean I'd be taking a huge risk for not only me but my daughter, my wife and my labrador and that's not really fair on them.

The beauty of IM is you can chose to work wherever you are, and the flexibility to work at which time. Works very well for me as a mother of 3 growing up teens. $ wise, not there yet but, I will continue to build it up! I know it takes time and effort.

Not going back to my old day job. Too tedious. Working for myself is more stressful, but good months I earn more than I did working for others. Now I just need to do something about the more frequent bad months, and I'll be set.

I worked 10 years in the insurance industry. When I quit, I let my license lapse so that I would never be able to ask myself that question.

Now I know I have to keep plugging along or I'll end up in retail or something instead.

I make less than ever, struggle, and still love what I do 100x more than anything I've ever done in the past.

2011 will be a great year!

Haven't had a J.O.B since 2001 so no going back.

Was a computer programmer and systems analyst for 19 years. Made lots of money as a salaried employee with bonuses and benefits.

I make a little more now - but work 1/10 th the hours and work at home. Lots of time to spend with family and friends.

I wouldn't change this for anything.

It certainly feels nice to be part of community of like minded freedom seekers. One of the reasons I got into SEO, IM, writing, and such is because I want to be able to work from anywhere in the world.

And know I can.

If I want to get on a plane and go to Hawaii for a month...I can. Sure I'll be working, but I'll be working in Hawaii. Taking breaks on the beach.

I think they call it "living the dream". When I was a "kid"...ten years ago...ha. I used to live on a Caribbean island and we all worked in restaurants and hospitality and we always said we were "living the dream".

I like this dream even better.

There is such pressure to ensure that you can pay the bills at the end of the month. Especially if you have a family. I've been running my IM business along side having a 9-5 job, to ensure I have enough money at the end of the month.

Thanks for the inspiration guys. Seems like most of you wouldn't go back to your old jobs. But I guess that makes sense - if you love the job you wouldn't have quit right :-)

I'm still working full time. In the past my IM projects have been a bit short sighted. I am now working on longer term things that have a chance of bringing in a full time income. Might take me 6 months or 6 years but I will get there.

I could never go back to my old job as a telesales agent. I never worried about the work itself, but after a prolonged period (20 Years), of taking abuse, and having my family spoken about in the vilest detail, and this was by the bosses themselves, my patience levels now are a lot lower than back then.

Also, I am lucky that I am a stay at home single dad, who can take his daughter to school, pick her up, and spend time with her doing her homework......nothing better than that in life believe me.

From my knowledge regular job is permanent earning. There will be ups and downs in the own business, and there is no regular income conformed until we settle. So if we are thinking to start a business its good to go for the regular job and side by side do own business.

I am a management and commerce graduate, today I lost my 9 to 5 job. I was working as factory manager in a private limited company which was refining heavy minerals sea sand for rare earth minerals. I was making $550 per month as my net income from that mind boggling, heart throbbing, spine shivering, ear shattering, depressing and sickening day job.

I have never been self-employed ever, don't know how does it feel like? But one thing I do know though, as the rate of global recession and inflation are going sky high every minute. It would be difficult for me to find another 9 to 5 job easily and within days. It will take months, I don't have sufficient funds in my account to feed my family and pay my bills but still. This time I have been so frustrated that I would like to take risk of being self-employed.

I am working on 2 projects to make a living from online business. I will need your support, guys!

For the past four months, I had been making more with article writing than I ever made while employed traditionally. However, things have become slow (maybe because 'tis the season?) and now I find myself bouncing back and forth with the thought of returning to a regular job, even just for part-time income, until I can get my IM back on track.

I've been trying my hand at creating websites and affiliate marketing. Hopefully, that, and my article writing, will get me back on track so that I do not have to get a traditional job (since I enjoy IM waaaaay more).

When I get out and work for my self, No matter how bag things get I know it will be worth it

No. I like what I do now, having a real job takes too much time out of my hands which I can spend with my family. There is not much difference in terms of earnings and sometimes what I get online is even better.

Ocassionally we all have that moment - for me it is when I would like a complete day off - you know how it is even when you are going out for the day with your family you still have to answer your emails and have the responsibilities that comes with owning your own business.

But on the other hand you have to think what a great achievement it is and how far you have come and the amazing feeling that comes with being your own boss.

In a nutshell I wouldn't change it for the world!!!!

In today's world, we have been fooled to believe that we can get rich quick. So what happens is that people will quit their jobs, start working for themselves, and expect the millions to pour in while doing little to no work.
Once the reality kicks in that they still have to work harder than they've ever worked (at least at the beginning to get set up for passive income), they panic. They start missing the days of a steady paycheque because, even though it only made ends meet, it at least did that.
having a "this is going to be easy" mentality is what will crush you because you will want to run for cover at the first sign of adversity.
Stick to it!!! The best and highest paying desk job in the world couldn't be better than what I do. Time is the only asset that you can never get back so it is important to spend it well. Hours of commuting to make someone else money is not on my to-do list!

I still work a day job and I think i'd miss part of it if I left. But I have it pretty good...great benefits, great pay, great bonus, and it's pretty low-stress. Also really close to my house. Even though I made a lot more online, I still like keeping the day job.

Being able to go South in the Winter and everywhere else in the Summer with my motorhome, horses, and computer lets me enjoy my hobby passions which are prospecting and treasure hunting. You just can't beat living your OWN life and IM is what makes it all possible.

Self-employed = freedom of time
employed = trading time

I don't understand why will people love to trade their time working 9 to 5. At times, its even longer than 9 to 5; it can stretch to 7pm 8 or 9pm.

Enjoying what you do for your self-employed business and having control of your time is more fuilfilling than working for others, climbing the corporate ladder.

Job is like buying the car now and then making monthly payments for a very long time.

Self Employed/Business is like saving money for that car for 5 years and then paying for it in cash 100%.

Really depends on whether you are capable of delayed gratification.

And coming to your question - no I can't answer because I have never went to a 9-5 job in my life. And am glad that I could be in IM right from college.

If I ever go bust I would HATE going back to 9 to 5 it would suck. I got use to not working for anyone and have having regulation I just hate it. The worse thing I hate about corporate america is that you have to lie all day every day and be dishonest. I once spoke up because they where staling money from taxpayers at the meeting they pulled me in the office said I was not a team player and fired me, and I hate not being able to speak the truth and at work you can't say what is true you have to shut up, that's the part I hate, and I'm not lazy just hate all the lies at work and backstabbing.

I haven't really had a job since I was in high school, so I don't want to go *back*, but I am starting to think I want a regular job in addition to my online ventures.

I'm finding that I can't stand being at home looking at the computer, I can't stand being alone all day, I want to interact with people face to face, and I want to do something SIMPLE for 8 hours a day. But then again, I could end up going for a regular job and finding out that I hate it and want to go *back* to internet marketing. Who knows?

I don't miss the 9 - 5 routine, but I miss the social side. There is no-one here to talk to. You can't celebrate with someone when things go well and you can't discuss your woes when things don't go well. Sure I could chat to my husband, but I see his eyes getting heavy after 5 minutes IM talk.

I've never missed my former workplace. Too much politics, petty squabbles, arrogant bosses not to mention the long commute and forced/unpaid overtime.

IM on the other hand is much less stressful. Income and workload is varied by choice, plenty of time for other things and no 'forced' relationships!

The freedom in this sector is what I love most, other than the money of course.
