Email marketing is typically far more successfully used as a way of converting into customers people who are already through the door.

Whether you can lawfully send marketing emails to people who have not opted in to your list or have some previous connection with you will depend on the regulations in your country. In the US, for example, the "Can-Spam Act" would apply.

In any case, the delivery-rate, open-rate and response-rate will all typically be far lower, in the case of recipients who don't already know you, than is the case for what one normally refers to as "marketing emails" to people whose permission for you to send them is already established.

    Email marketing does work if:

    1. You have a good list.
    2. You write compelling copy.
    3. The list has an interest in what you are offering.

For me,I just used the old fashion list building technique
It works great but you need to know the proper way of doing it though
The card idea is awesome I think.I think its not a good idea to buy a list
I tried doing it but failed
Include the prospect's name in every email, its good PR
    Hope it helps

Have you tested this, or is it just your own impression?

I ask because mine is very different.

I normally don't include the prospect's first name in every message, even when I have their first names and have that facility available. I believe it works to my advantage. And I believe (but can't prove) that that's because a fair proportion of people know perfectly well that you're doing it only through the automated opt-in in which they supplied it, because you want to try to appear to be on first-name terms with them for marketing purposes; in short, I think some people think it makes you sound like an insurance salesmen, and in some recipients' minds it immediately labels your emails "Marketing", which I prefer to avoid.

Just my perspective, having been considering and re-testing this over a couple of years.

That's a very interesting point, I've never actually taken the time to consider.

I suppose it may be affected by how savvy the people are in your particular niche but I shall certainly be testing this.

Interestingly the inhouse mailing system we use for our envelope company lets you add the persons name but doing so raises the spam rating. I don't use names when I send to this list but hadn't wondered if it had any effect.

Thank you Alexa, I shall be testing this out.

I think this is probably right.

It's terribly difficult to test and "prove", anyway, unless you manage to do so at the very start of what's going to become a rapidly growing and substantial list, with adequate numbers for split-testing to be statistically significant. And even then not so easy.

One thing is more or less certain: more people opt in, if you ask for "email only" rather than first name too, so you build a bigger list to start with.

Another excellent point. I always looked at email marketing from a point of view of trying to be having a one to one with the customer and talking to "them alone", rather than "them all". Yet subconsciously I always feel like I should be writing to them all but still I try to individualise the email I send. This is a new angle to explore. Thank you Alexa.

I'm learning a lot today, Caliban even informed me what the fear of buttons was. Sadly however, I've forgotten!

Fwiw, and this could be a quirk I own all to myself, when I check my emails and start the 'purge proccess' I always double check the ones that include my name before I hit the SPAM button.

It's not a perfect system, but when I'm addressed by my name I will try not to flag any senders where I may have signed up.

It comes from being on too many lists to keep track of, I guess, but I have found that the greater percentage of those email that address me by name are from lists I have joined.

              Not all of them, though.

Just an observation, not a knock...

Email marketing is way to use 'words' to market a product or service, or keep in touch with a potential customer base.

The 'words' carry most of the weight, so the 'words' need to be spelled correctly. (This can be hard for some of us...)

The point I'm trying to make is that you'll need to make sure you improve your spelling if you want to be successful at using the tactic.

Right now you're having a problem...

Actually many thinks that email marketing is dead... but actually it is a tool that every entrepreneur must seriously consider. despite of how accepted social media has become, targeted emails seem to result in much better conversions and are perhaps not going away anytime soon.

    Email marketing will work.

I'm not sure I would use HTML though when you go to send out your emails. A lot of times today if a email has HTML in it it's either blocked (the image is not displayed) or that message is sent to the spam folder.

I've had my best success with plain text emails. They seem to make it into the inbox more often. Again though this is my my personal expereince with email marketing.

Also where are you going to send these people? Are you sending them directly to a sales page or will you be sending them to a page where they can submit their name and email and you collect the lead? This will effect how well your email campaign works.

Also if you want better results from your email marketing give away a promo code, or some type of gift. People love free stuff.
