One thing I learned in 2010...Stay off WF

If I had to say I learned any big lessons in IM in 2010, it has to be this one.

Stay off of this forum when you have something you need to get done.

I can sit down at the computer to bang out 5 articles. This is something that should take me an hour to do, hour and a half max.

Then I make the mistake of opening this forum. Three hours later, I am yet to write a single word.

I learned to schedule my WF time. I only read this forum AFTER my checklist for the day is finished. This way I am being productive.

    Lol!

Probably not the only site that has a potential to waste your time away.....but a good point.

Get things that need to be done.....then browse the forums!

    Happy new year all!

Yeah, just some time in the morning and at the end of the day. Unless its a holiday, then a bit more. Or a Thursday.

Or some day of the week that has the letter "y".

Really though, what I look for is folks who can use help woth something I know about, or have an answer to something I need to know. But that kind of thing I can usually just scroll through the first 3 pages to find.

    Jon,

To be fair with you, you learned something very crucial to you, especially if you are the type that's easily distracted and hardly focuses on daily plans, etc...but I wouldn't like to learn such...

...to stay away from a place where I'm fed especially when I know very well that I have not had my last meal? And even if I have had my last meal, I have not fed the very person/people that fed me.

Most of us come here each and every day not because we are lazy, jobless, naughty or have no business to run but because we want to give back to a community that have given us more than we've ever needed.

Sorry, I will never learn to stay off WF. Maybe I'm addicted to the forum. I wouldn't know. If staying here is a crime, let me be a criminal.

Just my personal opinion and I think I'm entitled to it.

Oh how I agree! I am fairly new to WF and if I come here at the start of my day....I look up and it's 2-3 hours later... I say to myself, How is that possible?! lol I think it's because of all the great content here! I learn something new e v e r y d a y that I'm here reading. I love WF!
    p.s. I read more than I post. :-)

trouble is this forum can be so addictive. for me it's for two reasons - reading the success stories of others, or picking up some awesome tips from the pro's here. and that can suck up a lot of time.

just a case of finding the balance and not getting drawn in too deeply so you end up getting no work done.

Yes, I discovered this last year with FaceBook. I quit it for 8 months, but when I went back I scheduled 15 minutes a day, and that's it.

I think WF is a little different...you can learn something here, and you can also help others. Therefore, it gets 30 minutes most days, and often some extra time after my work is done.

Good lesson to be learned! I noticed how some new members post upward of 300 posts on WF within just a few short months! I don't see how that can even be possible unless all they do all day is post! HAHA

I try to visit the WF with a purpose.
It might be to try to find an answer to a problem, or hear which shopping cart (or whatever) IMers like best, or to promote one of my products, or answer questions in my field. When I go in without a purpose in mind, I'm doomed.

Good advice. WF is a great social stop, but I suspect there are people spending more time reading instead of doing. When I'm being really productive, I end my day here, right before I shut down for the day. By then, my brain is mush and my productive time is long gone!

My point wasn't so much don't ever come on the WF. I find this a great place to network and learn. In fact, i am often here looking for answers.

My point is to be more focused on work. If I am looking for something specific, its ok to be here. If not, I will wait after I finish my daily list.

Just like a real job, only surf at lunch time and after work.

I usually get into trouble when I hang out on any forum too much.

At first its a peep, then I start chatting and hanging out, then I start flaming and arguing.

So yes take a break BEFORE it gets out of hand - prob I will stop hanging here again soon except for when I need to hire people.

    Great advice!

browsing around WF can be time consuming especially in the war room area. i still spend much of my time online in WF because i'm still the first few steps of affiliate marketing. will tone it down once i get my website running

Have a great year to everyone!

Basically, I have found that the warrior forum is great use of time for me. It has helped me find new sources. That said, if you are on a deadline then I would limit my exposure. We must spend our TIME in a wise way.

Most people would agree. This is a great forum for warriors. Fact is, the best one.

I oculd not agree more... I have fallen in to this trap I spend hours looking for magic pills for internet marketing and end up actually doing nothing as a result.. However once I have muy tasks done, writing a couple of artilces, building some backlinks, I so read htis firum there are some golden nuggets on here if you look hard enough !

I set my WF sessions up to last about 30 minutes each time with the intent to visit 3 - 4 times a day.

That may seem like a lot of time but in many cases it is part of a work rest cycle which I established after I fell ill due to overworking/exhausting myself out in June/July of 2010.

Also, if I don't always stay the full 30 minutes. If I get accomplished what I needed to do in 20 minutes then I stop researching/posting at that time.

I view this forum as a valuable business asset and treat it as such instead of looking at it as a water cooler forum - Hopefully that made sense.

Once I made that switch my productivity skyrocketed and I was actually getting more out of the forum.

    Respectfully,
    Tim

I am sorry I disagree as my experience has been far different. I have found when I do not spend regular time on this forum , that is when my focus waivers.

This forum keeps me focused and motivated, and I actually earn a large percentage from here. For many it is different , but if you really want to get the best out of this forum spend the majority of your time trying to add value you will find that by giving you receive more,

I wouldn't advise staying away from the WF, but maybe instead, use with moderation.. Forums, especially this one, are one of the easiest ways to maximize your business, learn everything in one spot and keep on top of latest trends, but with any forum, if you spend 99% of your time reading and not taking what you learn and applying, it's all for naught.

So, 2 parts application and 1 part learning and you'll be set for 2011.

    Happy New Year..

I think we have all fallen into that trap at one time or another. You have to balance learning with doing otherwise you just fall down the well and you cant get out. Find out what you passion is or what your true motivation is to get you going. It's also easy to get started and then second guess etc. Lots of pitfalls but nothing better that a good kick in the pants to get you going. Keep forging ahead or just stop trying.

    It's all about balance.

It's easy to label the forum as a time waster, on more than one occasion I've found myself on here just poking around without any actual purpose. And you are correct, stopping that would be an excellent New Years resolution.

But the forum is also where I've obtained work and met many other marketers with whom I've developed great business (and often personal) relationships. In these cases the WF has been worth its weight in gold.

I consider the forum as both an educational resource and a social networking platform. Social networking is a valuable marketing strategy, but it should only be part of what your day consists of, not the entire day.

I also work solo, a radical departure from the 20 years I spent in the corporate world as a Systems Analyst and Software Developer. In the "real world" I worked with other technical professionals face to face and we interacted with one another and shared our technical expertise. We also ate meals together and socialized. In may respects the forum and Skype have taken their place.

In 2011 I intend to limit my time here and not use the WF as an excuse to not work. But as for staying off completely no way!

All my best wishes to everyone in 2011

    Bill
