How to best use Twitter?

I am starting to get alot of twitter followers, and I was wondering when I initially make contact with them, is it best to send a DM or an @ message?
I have looked at the twitter help page, but it isn't very clear which one will get the most exposure.

    Personally, I don't market directly to my Twitter followers. My goal, for all my social media sites, is to get them off there and into my sales funnel.

    What I normally start out with is a Tweet to one of my article sites, which will lead from there into my funnel. If small percentage is clicking through to my funnel then I need to find out why.

    There is always analysis, patients, improve, and repeat in this game. Yes I consider IM a game and not a business. As Gekco one's said.

    I use @ messages, because the private message are very spammy, at the beginning I check the PM but now I just don't, are so many spam messages that I can't control it anymore, I suppose the same happens to everybody.

    Its best to get them to your op tin page that you would place in your profile because people love FREE things. You don't want to start with commercial tweets. Post links to news, or stories that would interest your market. Get them used to clicking links in your tweets. Follow only about 8-10 people per day. If you do this on a regular basis people will follow you. After you have about 100 followers then you could throw in a promotional tweet for about every 3 tweets. If you post too many sales people will unfollow you. Like I said before people love FREE stuff so I would mainly promote my opt - in page.

      I set up a Twitter account a few years back during the 30 day challenge and I keep getting followers every week. I have no idea why they want to follow me because I don't know what I'm doing. Maybe I'll get that book from you Stew.
