How to Succeed in 2011

EDIT: Okay before you start, this is a 1060 word post. Kinda long, but it's worth spending 5 minutes on.

Alright so it's not quite "HAPPY NEW YEAR" time as it's about 6:00 PM (central) here but I think this is the best time to post this thread as it will give you some time to plan your first week.

When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me:

"The way you start the first week of the New Year, that's how most of your year will be."

Now I don't know how much truth this actually holds but sub-consciously I always used to start off the first week of the new year doing all kinds of good stuff.

You know like, smiling and being nice to everyone, not playing video games for 5 straight hours and other kid stuff.

Last year though, I spent the first week of 2010 planning about my business and thinking about what I need to do to take my business from where it is today (which wasn't exactly where I wanted ) to where I want it to be.

I planned everything and then for the whole year of 2010 I stuck with that plan.

Result: I was doing close to $2k a month in January of 2010 and in November of 2010 I crossed the $10K a month mark. So now, I am officially running a five figure a month business.

Now is my mom's "myth" true?

I don't know, but what I do know for sure is that coming up with a plan and STICKING to it equals success most of the times.

So this year I will be doing the same but I want you to do it too.

So here's what i will be doing:

1. Figure out my GOAL.
2. LOOK OVER what I am already doing.
3. Come up with a PLAN OF ACTION for next year.
4. Find something that will keep me MOTIVATED through the year.

So let's run through this generally:

1. Figure out my GOAL:

Well, my goal is nothing but to run 6-figure business by 2011. I know it seems outrageous but hey, "It is better to shoot for the stars and miss than aim at the gutter and hit it."

EDIT: My other goal is to get started in the IM niche.

So yeah, now all of my efforts will be focused towards that goal.

2. Look over what I m already doing:

Ok right now my main sources of income are:

Clickbank:
I make money on clickbank by promoting affiliate products to my list.

Amazon Associates:
I make money by creating review type sites and ranking in google (much easier to do)

So I have been having massive success with clickbank for the last year but I will now look for trends and ups and downs and try to figure out why they happened. Maybe I can find many seasonal niche markets and if I will find some seasonal niches I will mark my calendar for that month or week or whatever and try to repeat the "success".

Same goes for Amazon but I will share what my discoveries from last year with you guys:

I saw a surge of traffic for my "gifts for him" site in February. Hmm, why?

Okay, Valentine's day.

So this year, I am ready for it.

I also saw a surge of traffic on my weight loss sites in January last year. Hmm, why?

I know, new year resolutions. Everyone wants to loose right after new year, right?

I also found other seasonal niche markets like, Christmas, graduation gifts, mother's day, father's day etc.

So if you are doing something right now, look for the opportunities you might have for the next year.

Come up with a Plan of Action for the next year:

Okay so the important step. Decide what you want to do for the next year.

Sounds real simple but it isn't.

Here's what a common todo list looks like:

Try:
Clickbank
Blogging
Niche Marketing
Amazon
Forum Marketing
SEO
etc.

That's not a good idea. Here are some important steps:

You need to know EXACTLY what you will be doing and one word doesn't tell you that.

Instead of just putting "Clickbank" on your todo list, put your clear plan of action. For example:

"Try to make money with Clickbank by building a list of subscribers (by giving away small reports related to the product being promoted) and then promoting the product via the follow-up series"

Be as descriptive as possible. Let your brain know exactly what you will be doing.

Finally, Find something that will keep me MOTIVATED through the year.

I can tell you from my almost 3 years of IM experience that it's not going to be easy so you need to find something to keep yourself motivated through the hard times.

Something that will help you get up once you get knocked down hard by the realities of life.

Something that you can hang on to and not give up when your friends "worry" for you and tell you to stop.

Something that you can do ANYTHING for.

For me, it's my family. My brother and my mom are the most important people in my life and I want to make sure they don't have to worry about anything in life.

I want to make sure my brother can go to the college of his choice, have the car of his choice, buy the clothes of his choice. I don't want freedom for me, but I want freedom for him.

I have always loved my family and I know that I can't possibly repay them in any form so the best I can do for them is to do the best I can.

We all think that we want money more than anything and we can do anything for money. Well that's not always true.

Will you be willing to take a bullet to your head for a million dollars?

Probably not.

But will you be willing to take a bullet to your head for you child?

I know many parents who will.

And that is doing ANYTHING and Everything for someone.

So figure out what your motivation is.

Is it your wife, kids, parents, financial freedom what?

Now, this post is longer than what I have typed this whole year but I think it's important and can help you so I don't regret the hour I spent typing it.

That's all, have a Happy and Successful New Year.

That was a lengthy post but I appreciate you putting it out there. I think most people overlook the value of setting goals (Myself Included). I plan to have a plan for 2011 and start to duplicate some of the many success stories out here.

I especially like what you put at the end. I think too many people place to much of the emphasis on making money. Money is great, don't get me wrong and thats what most of us are here to make but in reality it is not the end result we are really looking for. Money is just a medium of exchange and what most want is a better standard of living. Whether that is for family or for themselves it is still that which motivates!! Happy New Years!!

Been working on my goals for this coming year today. Both professional and personal. I have learned that without actually writing down your goals and looking them over often, you get nowhere. You spin your wheels.

I challenge anyone who is serious about their business to write your goals down...not just for the year, but for the next five to ten years, and create an action plan to reach them. I know it sounds like a pain to do, but it's well worth it, and it gives you the motivation to build your business and get where you want to be.

Thanks for a great in-depth post. That would've taken me an hour or so to write the way I type.

My goal is to stay focused and quit bouncing from one idea to the next. That got me nowhere this last year. Time for me to start doing and stop thinking about doing.

      Happy New Year!

Yeah this post almost took me 50 minutes to write (from concept to proofreading) but if it helps or motivates just ONE person, that's a job well done for me

Now I think you have a great goal here and you definitely need to stick to a plan and take massive action.

BTW at my newbie stage I had the same problem and I used get over it by using a somewhat lame but effective technique. I downloaded a 1028 x 768 Just Do It (Nike) image from the internet and I made that my desktop background.

I also bought a huge Just Do It poster and I put it right in from of my work table. Now whenever I thought of doing something and procrastination started to kick in, I used to look at that poster and in moments I was full of motivation and I wanted to work at whatever it was RIGHT NOW.

You might wanna think about doing something similar

Happy New Year to you too.

LOL this is not lame... If you don't mind I'm gonna 'steal' your technique. I used to make 'vision boards' of things that I want to achieve, but Just do it has more impact on me.

Perhaps I'm the biggest procrastinator alive! :p I tend to get bored easily and lose interest fast.

What helps is to stick with niches of my interest. If I'm passionate about something I don't mind working on it, writing about it etc.

Anyway great post and a happy new year to you too.

          Thanks for the tips!

2010 was a pretty good year for me. In fact, I doubled my earnings in comparison to 2009. But with that being said, my primary goal for 2011 is to BUILD A BUSINESS instead of just making money. The things I'm doing now unfortunately rely on third part sources (in particular, EZA), and I typically make all of my money from one source (Clickbank), so if one of those things become a problem... uh oh!

So, what I want to do is basically build something that is more secure and less dependent on third party sites. I don't have a full plan in place just yet, but basically it's going to involve building lists, building more websites, promoting a wider array of niches, and for the love of everything good in this world... MAKE MY OWN FREAKING PRODUCT!!

Good luck everyone with your 2011 goals!

You know I have found out from personal experience that something magical happens when you write things down that you want to do them. About a year ago I used to use time management softwares and what not. But today I don't use any software at all. I also stopped typing out my todo list or my goals.

I use the good ole' pen and paper and it works best for me.

And you know what, I am pretty sure you will eventually have more money and success that you ever thought of.

Why? Because you have a reason to succeed.

I hope you have a great new year.

Great post, thanks! I needed to read something uplifting.2010 was very tough year. i managed to get my 'offline' business off the ground and it is doing well but still can't seem to make it online. I've made progress but I haven't made any real money yet. I think I've been jumping around too much from thing to thing. Your post made me realise i need to put in to practice the same planning as my offline business and then I will hopefully see results. the 'why' is also very important. I started my own business as I didn't want to work for someone else anymore. That was my motivation then, the IM stuff is really that i want financial freedom, for me and my family. i don't care about materialistic possessions, I just want to tell all these greedy banks to go screw themselves.. once again thanks for the motivational post. Happy New Year to all warriors, may 2011 be the year we all make a fortune!

Great post and congratulations with all of your success over the past year.

I also noticed how you spend the first week or two of the New Year sets the tone for the rest of the year or at least most of it. I think there's something to your mothers theory. And moving beyond the money is great motivation- the purpose of doing all this hard work.

BTW, "Just Do It" really is a great motivator when you're feeling lazy. I saw a show on some of the most memorable TV ad's and when that ad aired it really motivated and inspired a lot of people all over the world.

Great post, Mo...you really hit the nail on the head about finding your true "why" for doing this. Those of us who have been doing IM long enough know this - it's simply not enough to say that you want the money, because there will inevitably be times when you're so frustrated and mad at your failures and lack of success that you can't even think or see straight anymore, and it is in times like these that your "why" needs to be strong enough so that you have a reason to pull yourself back up and go at it again.

The path to IM success may be simple, but it's definitely not easy, and you're absolutely right about the fact that you WILL encounter tough times that will cause you to want to throw in the towel and give up. Your "why" needs to be strong enough to transcend this pain and failure, and you really need to think hard about this, as it's probably the most important factor that will determine whether you succeed or fail.
