Customized Recent Posts Widget Help

Happy New Year to all of you.
I have recently started finishing up an affiliate website of mine and am having problems with the theme´s widgets. I don´t have the option to change the theme due to it being tied in with the program that I am running.
As a result, I am currently on the lookout for a way to build my own widgets that I can implement straight into the sidebar php page with html. At present I am only looking for a recent posts widget and perhaps an archives widget.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I know it is possible to use a code such as
<?php wp_get_archives('title_li=&type=postbypost&limit=1 0'); ?>
But is there a way to get them placed in html along with styling and border?
All advice appreciated.
