It's a new year and still I'm stuck in a quagmire. I want to start this my online business but everytime I turn on my computer I get distracted by many things such as Facebook, chatting, computer games, web surfing, forums, etc. Instead of making websites, I spend hours and hours on useless activities.

I would appreciate any advice to get me out of this rut. I really need to get things started so that I can have a consistent income and not be dependent on my parents. I have the motivation but I seem to be a sucker for distracting things.

I also need to spend less time on the computer so that I can read the books and other printed materials to educate myself about my online business. But everytime I wake up, my PC seems to be a magnet attracting me to it, and before I knew it, I've wasted several hours on useless and unnecessary activities.

Any advice and suggestions would be appreciated. Happy New Year!

    Hey, smartlazy

One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is PLAN!!!

You know what you need to do: write it down! Even the smallest details, write them down!

Before you go to bed, write a "To Do" list for the following day and do your best to stick to it. What you do, tick off; what you fail to do, add on the following day's list.

Try to think of every action you take and what it does in terms of helping you achieve your goal e.g, spending 30 minutes writing an article: think about that: 30 minutes, writing an article that could lead to even 2 sales is worth up to (and possibly more thank) $50. Use this as the tool with which to fight off any desire to, say, read another forum post (like this one? :-))

Also, some people like to have a visual representation of their goal (I think someone said they put a picture of their dream car (their goal) on their PC. This helps you stay motivated.

Lastly, read this: http://www.warriorforum.com/mind-war...rmanently.html it's a brilliant thread, but... don't spend all day reading it: act on it!

    Good luck.

    WM

I joined Bryan Zimmerman's course recently and one of the best tools he gave me was something called Focus Master. Google it and you should be able to locate it.

I have been working from home for 18 months now but it is only in the past 7 months that I have made a real success with my service to Offline Clients.

Using Focus Master really helps as you put in the tasks you need to complete for the day then start the first one - the software uses a timer so you have to concentrate on the job in hand so don't get distracted.

It has helped me to do at least four times more work than I was doing before I used it.

    Happy New Year!

Keep in mind that work must be done before play. The Internet is a never ending entertainment console. It is also a never ending educational console.

It's up to the operator of the console to determine the levels of success that get reached.

This sounded great and I went to get a copy myself.

Just downloaded it and found that it is a "clone" of the Action Machine product that came out a couple of years ago. As this is a commercial product I was quite surprised that it was allowed to be being given away free!

Derek Franklin who created the Action Machine has a couple of free videos that show how to use it at Conquer Information Overload - The Action Machine. May be of help to some people.

I've used the Action Machine with mixed results, ironically I now need something to get me to make proper use of it. But I can see how someone more disciplined than myself could make good use of this tool.

Now if only it could be redesigned to fit onto the 10.1 inch display on my Netbook!

    Hi smartlazy,

What do you want to accomplish with your business? What are your business goals?

Set aside time - a day, if needed - to decide on what you want to accomplish by running an online business. It sounds like your desire to be up to date on trivial, day-to-day matters is greater than your desire to be free with an online business. Your desire to succeed must be greater than your desire to play around online; goal-setting is where this desire switch starts.

When you become emotionally involved with these goals you will be less distracted. The urge to succeed, the urge to be free, the urge to make money from home and the urge to not have to answer to a boss can become greater than the urge to check out Facebook or chatting online.

What do you want more: to check out FB, online games, etc or live a life of absolute freedom. Tap into the emotions of being free by setting goals and visualizing yourself living a dream life. By tapping into these emotions consistently you won't have a problem with being distracted.

    All the best

Do you really want to start an online business?

      How much?

      WHY?

What are you willing to give up?

      Write those four questions down.

Then write the answers to all four questions. Write without stopping to think. Time yourself. Give yourself five minutes each to write an answer to each question. (20 minutes total.)

Remember -- write without stopping to think. You want to get at your own uncensored thoughts. Don't lift your fingers from the keyboard (or pen from the paper if you're writing using a pen...)

You need to know what YOU want. At the moment, you don't.

Once you KNOW, you can motivate yourself... The "WHY" question contains the key to motivation. What do you want to be, do or have?

You'll find that this simple exercise is very powerful.

Remember the exercise -- and use it when you backslide, as you will -- we all do. :-)

Good luck, and happy New Year. :-)

First step is to make a list of things you should NOT do, and slap yourself everytime you catch yourself doing them, then immediately go back to just something else.

I agree with completely disconnecting. Turn everything off. Go outside with a pen a paper and write/draw up a plan. Break that plan into small chunks that take maybe 30 mins to complete.

After finishing your plan, start working on each 30 minute task/chunk. When you finish it, physically cross it off on your piece of paper. You will get a great sense of achievement at seeing your tasks reduce, and you will be making progress by only having to focus for 30 mins at a time :-)

Many new marketers get information overload and thus do not take action. If you are getting distracted by stuff such as computer games and Facebook, maybe you should ask yourself if this really is for you? Are you enjoying internet marketing? Cause if you are not, I would look at other ways to make money.

I don't mean to beat down or you or anything, it's just that if it's not your passion you won't thrive.

    Hey Smartlazy !

Well I'm a lot like you but we both recognise we have a problem which is the first step to doing something about it.
I'm back at work today and ticking off tasks done and enjoying it.
Here is how I got there -
Might sound a bit morbid but its not really - take a walk round your local graveyard - read what it says on the grave stones -look for the wisdom.
The biggest lesson i got was my life is all about time . If i totally waste it then hey thats my choice, but its not really what i want. Ok - so I know i have a major weakness with time management . Simple answer - learn to become good at it . I got a brian tracy time management mp3 download - there's loads of stuff on time management out there - just pick anything and practice it.
If you need your ass kicking then check John Carlton's latest blog post - that should do it. Still something missing? u mean THE reason why loads of people try this **** and get nowhere? This opened my eyes buddy, Check out all 3 if you've got time
still need some help ? especially when on you're pc? then get some kind of blocker - that link should give u some ideas.

I don't think it's always a case of not wanting it bad enough... sometimes knowing what to do for the best and what you should be prioritising on is so overwhelming it can literally stop you in your tracks and you find yourself wasting time away on pointless activities.

I think the idea of writing yourself a list the night before and working your way through it is a good one. Or think to yourself that you will write, say, two articles and then 'reward' yourself with 20 minutes surf time. Good luck!

SMART people that are LAZY usually go to college and get a 9 to 5 job. That maybe your best route. If you are truly ambitious you shouldn't need anybody to light a spark under your but.

I think it might be a good idea to put some sort of parental controls on your internet during the time you need to be working. That way you can't get distracted. Make a list of your favorite sites, and go into your home network and block them.

You'll be super productive in no time. Take it from me, my name might say lazy, but it doesn't mean i'm not productive too!

So my advise is do what you enjoy most...in your case.... Facebook, chatting, computer games, web surfing, forums, etc.

      It's really simple just stop!
      Stop doing all that garbage.

If you want your actions to change you must first change your mind.

"If you continue to think What you have always thought, you will continue to get what you have always got" ~Patrick Shelley

All these thing you're referring to (games, facebook ect...) are put there to distract you, same thing with the TV. All worthless fodder for your brain.

You have to decide to stop all that and if your resolution is true then you will.

Make an iron clad rule that you cannot open even one of those distractions until you have put in 12 hours worth of work minimum. Then you can go play.

Basically you just need to cowboy up and giter done!

It's all up to you, no one will do it for you nor can they.

      Not harsh - just reality!

Learn to focus. Internet Marketing is a hard game and even gathering information makes a head spin. Read and read inspiring success stories from the people who have done the right thing in marketing. Take a day off from the computer. Clear up your mind and ask yourself if you really want to become like them.

It is so easy to get overwhelmed and distracted with all of the millions of time holes out there today. I always start offline, with a good old fashioned pen and paper. I make an outline for my day with concrete steps--things I can actually accomplish, one at a time. Then I make sure to sign off of every distracting site-- email, facebook, twitter, etc. I work my way down the list, and take breaks every hour or so OFFLINE until I'm done. Then I let myself have some fun.

I'm thankful for the helpful and not-so-helpful replies to this thread. These past few days I had an honest-to-goodness reflection of myself, and I've decided to make a commitment to my online business.

I've taken the hard route and I'm now blocking websites that are distractions for me. I edited the hosts file and now I can no longer access these sites. I can't block Facebook, however, since I have some of my work there and I'm planning to do some marketing there. I've also uninstalled my computer games.

Maybe when I become successful, I will revisit this thread and take a look back at the times when I have trouble concentrating.

I think Angela said it best with her 4 questions. You really have to internalize WHY you are procrastinating and wasting time. If you know why you aren't doing what you need to do you can make better decisions.

Good choice un-installing all your games. I did that over 2 years ago and haven't looked back.

On a some what related note, has anyone tried Jason Fladliens' productivity product?
