How to Create an Ebook/Digital Report/Blueprint?

Ok, let's say I have found a topic that I want to create an ebook or digital report about. How do I create an ebook? I tried searching the forum, but I find posts about people selling an ebook (not how to make an ebook). When I say "how do I make an ebook" I mean how do I put one together or what does the ebook need? I notice ebooks all have some kind of legal page, copyright, etc. I don't know anything about that. I don't know anything about squeeze pages either.

So does anyone have a free ebook about how to design an ebook or can you reference me to a thread? Thanks.

    In its most basic form, an ebook is simply a document you have "printed" to PDF format. Some programs call it "exporting" instead.

    As far as the initial legal page goes, the basic format is this:

    Copyright 2011 (author)

    All rights reserved.

    Don't you go stealing this book! I'm seriously!

    For more information, (mailing address)
    Most people say something a little more official-sounding in the third part.

    None of that legal notice is really necessary, the way copyright law is interpreted currently. You don't need to put a copyright notice, you don't need to say "all rights reserved," you don't need to explicitly prohibit infringement, and you don't need to include your address.

    But if you get a "real" book, you'll find those four elements in the legal notice at the front, because that's the way publishing houses always do it. So whenever people make an ebook, they do the same thing, so it will feel more like a "real" book.

      You can create a pdf quick with OpenOffice (free to download). Write the ebook in word or openofficewriter.

      Play with the formatting and proofing and you can export it as "pdf" and you have your ebook download ready to go.

      If you have ebooks on your hard ddrive look through a few of "legals" to get an idea of what they do. Some go way overboard; you cankeep it simple.

      If it's a for-sale ebook, you don't want it given away; unless you are giving resell rights, you prohibit buyers from selling the ebook. If it has affiliate links in it there's a new FTC disclaimer (you can find that on this forum with a search).

      The hard part is organizing and writing the ebook - easy to "produce" it - then you are into the marketing aspect....site or sales page, squeeze page, etc.

    Here's what I do. Very basic

    First page: Title Page
    Title of book, your name, copyright notice

    Second page: Table of Contents

    Third Page: Begin Writing Ebook

    Add plenty of screenshots if appropriate to the topic

    I write it in Open Office and export as pdf.

    A free method is to write it in open office document. Then after you save it once, you save it again as a pdf. You make the pdf available to your customers. When you need to update, you go back to your open office document, save it as the revision, then save it again as a pdf and you have an updated version of your eBook to send to your list - you can promise and deliver free unlimited updates on your sales page.

    All of you are awesome, thanks so much! Thank you for clarifying the legal stuff, I was always stumped about that. I have Open Office and have created PDF's before, so that part will be easy. You guys/gals rock! Thanks SO MUCH!
