People I Don't Mention Much

There are three people in this forum that I almost never talk about, but who have consistently been very helpful to me.

- Andrew Seltz
- Chris Ramsey
- Paul Hancox

There are two other people in this forum that I may mention or argue with, but almost never recognise for the many insights they've given me. Whenever I've had a real kick-in-the-arse moment about my business that forced me into radically rethinking my positions, it was one of these two who inspired it.

- Paul Myers
- ExRat

Earlier this year, I was made aware that a particular member who appreciated my help and advice had never gotten "the time of day" from me. I was cynical and paranoid and didn't think he was sincere.

So I'd like to formally and publicly apologise to John Durham for being, well, a bit of a jerk. And it's Paul Myers and ExRat who gave me that particular kick-in-the-arse moment, too.

It's easy to forget, in the early stages of building a business, that it's still just in its infancy. I've only been doing this IM thing for eighteen months, and I've come very far very fast and even had more than one massive setback.

And a lot of building a business is plain old-fashioned bravado. We have authority because we say we do. We are successful because we say we are.

But it's good for us to stop and think about the other people who influence us, who help us become someone who deserves that authority and success.

And it's also good, now and again, to stand up and remind people... not least ourselves... that what authority and success we do have and deserve is not purely our own doing.

    Well said Caliban.

An admirable post. I'd actually add you as someone I've thoroughly learned a lot off and it was a pleasure chatting to you New Years Day.

I had no idea you'd done this for only 18 months. That's very impressive, it's taken me 7 years to get here!

Keep going, don't stop and drink rum.

Caliban, when I saw this thread title, I smiled and came here expecting to make some wise ass comment about how they probably don't mention you much either.

But I must admit that this is one of the best threads I have seen started by you, which is not to say that you do not offer value, because you certainly do.

Many of us go through mental processes similar to what you have described here.

Like most people, I'm quick to stand up and talk about how great I am.

I also speak frequently on the subject of airing our failures. When you undertake a business plan that crashes and burns and loses you thousands of dollars - newbies need to hear that, too.

One of the biggest risks we face in talking ourselves up in public is that we will begin to believe our own BS. And I've been guilty of that several times, this past year. I'll probably be guilty of it several more times in the coming year.

And that, too, is a failure. There's no money lost in it, or at least not that we can see, but IM is a relationship business. I've damaged or destroyed many relationships, and will damage or destroy more in the future, by just flat-out being a jerk at the wrong time.

I see this, and I'm trying to make my peace with it. I don't expect everyone to like me... but I do expect that when people don't like me, it should be for a good reason, and not just because I was a jerk.

I agree, and I have definitely damaged and destroyed many relationships, most often due to my other shortcomings that are far too numerous to detail right now.

In the forum environment, I expect some people will like me, others will hate me, and still more do not know or care to know me and are therefore very apathetic towards me.

As I recall, you recommended me to a mutual acquaintance the other day. Why would you do such a thing for someone you did not like?

Seriously, I've heard next to nothing from the peanut gallery about that largely-invented drama. Mainly because when they come to me fishing, I point out in no uncertain terms that I like you just fine. They keep trying to go there, and there's no there there. But it's all fishing and prying, not "guess what Bill said" or anything like that.

Having spoken to both of you, I can personally say, just the other night you both said to me, some very nice things about each other. No animosity at all.

You both clearly have a lot of respect for each other and I would like to add you have both, along with many others, been very inspirational to me since I joined. Not meaning to suck up but so have Paul and Roger.

    Nice post Caliban

It is always nice to thank the people that have helped you along the way.

As for myself, most of the people I would like to thank are not on too many forums. One has an account here, not sure if it's really him but it is his name, but has only posted 3 times sense being here.

But it's a good way to start the new year and I would like to throw out my BIG THANKS to all that have helped me, if you happen to come across this thread and see it.

I doubt any of us get anywhere in life without help from other folks. It's just that more often than not, we don't initially recognise it as being particularly 'helpful', until we get our egos out of the way. (or is this just me? )

All these apology threads and threads aimed at thanking people make me feel bad.

1: I feel bad because there is a wonderful gentleman who used to frequent the forum, Corwinnx who had tried taking me under his wing, insofar as to put me into his mentoring program free of charge. What happened? My girlfriend told me to quit that **** and get a job, because I wasn't making any money at that particular moment, and I lost touch with him. I apologize to him for wasting his time like that.

2: There's been several awesome warriors over the years I've been here that are awesome and treated me with respect, even tho I might not have deserved it. I know I can be an ass at times. But thank you all who show me the respect regardless of the assery that can come up at times.

3: 18 months and you're doing awesome. 6 years and I'm just really starting to buckle down and get this going right. I should have been at your point by now a long time ago. So congratulations on that. But you know that thing about the new... shiny... objects.... I'm sorry, what was I saying?

4: I only wish for you to grow and get better, sir!

I suppose its about time I get to work, and get my work to work for me for once.

There is no way I would ever attempt to make such a list. I would be too afraid of forgetting somebody. There's nothing wrong with other people doing it, but not this guy.

That being said, there are categories of people here that I like.

Those with a deliciously clever sense of humor.

Those who I often disagree with, but in a way that's challenging, not rude.

    Those who offer interesting insights.

Those who are just generally nice people.

Those who are generous with their contributions to this forum, and appear to truly appreciate what a privilege it is to have a place like this to make such contributions to.

    Those who...

...heck! I was trying to be general, and I still feel like I've left out whole groups of people.

    All the best,
    Michael

p.s. Caliban, as the person who started this thread, I think it's only fair that I mention you fall into at least one of the aforementioned groups.

Well, it's sort of a list of people that I've remembered I've forgotten. There's still people I've forgotten, true, but I've forgotten I've forgotten them. I think it's human nature to forget those who have influenced and helped us
along the way. Our egos get so caught up in the "look at me and look at all
that I've done all by myself" BS, that we forget that we don't live in a
bubble and that many people, whether we want to admit it or not, help us
along our way in life...right from our kindergarten teacher to the last guy
who said, "Hey, you know...your squeeze page just might convert better if
you have the main content all above the fold."

I will be the first to admit that were it not for so many people in my life, I
would be nothing today. Just the person that I am, business aside, is thanks
to my upbringing and the love of a wonderful woman who I am fortunate
            enough to call my wife.

The friends I have made here (and there are those here who I truly call
friends) have given me the confidence (we all get a little insecure
sometimes) to believe that maybe I just might have a decent head on
my shoulders even though so many times I have my doubts.

Yeah, even successful people sometimes have doubts.

Please don't believe for a second that we walk on water.

And in the final analysis, none of us are beyond leaving this world, ashes
to ashes, dust to dust. And when that time comes, nobody is any
different regardless of how much money they've made while around.

Try to remember that the next time you look down on somebody who
may not be as fortunate as you.

So if it seems sometimes like I think I'm the greatest thing since sliced
bread, it's as Caliban said...it's all part of our own little "Greatest Show On
Earth" that we put on for the benefit of those who we feel we need to
            impress and our own egos.

The key is putting it all into perspective and realizing that our sh*t stinks
just as much as the bum on the street with no place to live.

Caliban, thanks for the great post.

Caliban - I often talk to the people I work with regarding what I see are the two ways to build a business around oneself online. One way is to define your ideal customer, and then mirror their values and perceptions back to them so they will feel connected and drawn to you. The other is to just be yourself but louder than life and in public. There are 2 BILLION people online. Enough of them will just LIKE you automatically because you are like them - all you have to do is get in front of them. And the internet makes that easily possible. Find just 1000 of em who will PAY you to be you, and then make just $100 of product a year, and you've got a living. Anyone can do it, really. But Caliban, you make it look FUN. Kudos.

Yes I completely agree with you. Not only have they contributed a lot on the forum and in helping some of us, they have also make a lot of useful information available here at Warrior forum for everybody who is interested in such information. And I sincerely think they really deserve a "Thank You" and you too by the way.

At the beginning of the New Year, it's always good to take stock of what we have done, how far we have come and also be grateful for the circumstances and the people that have brought us up to this point.

I couldn't even begin to list all the people, some of whom have literally materialized out of nowhere, who have helped and mentored me over the past 12 months. I'm certainly grateful for all the contacts, relationships and friendships that this forum has blessed me with over this period.

Come on, people! This isn't the place to comment on Caliban's avatar. Saying he looks like Triple H, a member of Led Zeppelin, or a throwback to the days of the Commodore 64 or Atari 2600 is just insulting.

    After all...

Anybody can see he is clearly going for that ICP look!!!

I've learned not to underestimate what's comes out from Mr. Caliban's keyboard.

That's why when I saw this thread I knew that I will find something worth reading.

As our tower grows taller we tend to forget the foundation stones upon which we began to build.

I found great to be able to strip from our ego carcass and say: "this hand held me, this shoulder contained me, this back carried me"...

My articles are now better because of Darklock's list, perhaps without knowing you are being really helpful, so I won't forget to tell you, thank you!

It's refreshing to see someone give credit where credit is due. That happens far to infrequently in this "what's in it for me" world.

There's a marketing and life lesson to be learned right here in this thread if you haven't yet realized it. Notice Caliban started the thread in praise of other people, then notice how many have praised Caliban.

What you get is what you give, folks. Call it karma, call it cause and effect, cause it like energy attracting like energy ... call it pudding if it makes you happy, but the lesson is clear and plain.

    Caliban,

For all the time I have been here, I have always enjoyed your posts. some of the things you say always reminds me of the big brother that gets all up in your business, then beats you up, because he wants to keep you out of trouble.

I appreciate your posts more, from one here recently, when you finally came out of the closet and told people the truth about yourself...

That you are a 'big softie' at heart.

    Never change.

    Thanks,

    John

      Hi C,

Awesome post....made me think of how I have been a jerk at times and lost friends as well.

Although I think I tend to spill more than I should at times too

I think that you are a good fellow I have watched you not be a jerk just as I have watched you be one. I think you add far more value to this forum in particular then you give yourself credit for or realize.

The reality is we are people man we have life issues going on businesses to run This past year I lost well over 100k in just a few months and that caused me to stop posting for a while stop doing what I was doing I shut my sites down I went into a severe depression. Living with the issues I do at times can be the most frustrating at times, but I always found it inspirational to see ol Caliban on here in spite of the things you were facing not too long ago. So even though I never told you this I fired back up and put my hands up again to fight this battle called life I was literally at the point of......

My whole time on this forum I tried to be a good guy sometimes I am not I guess but man people $$$ me off ,like they just do I don't know why but sometimes you wanna reach through the screen and shake some of these people especially the ones I caught scamming blatantly in here.

I signed in the other day and noticed 2 people had removed themselves from my friends list. One thing that is hard to remember especially if you are passionate about something is that people are watching you and listening even if you don't think so.

I hope 2011 rocks for you man I really do because I for one appreciate you!
      Cheers

It is good to describe and mention people who have helped you in your work. I believe it is very good post and you should keep on mentioning people who are helpful not only to you but to other members as well. So we can give importance to them when they comment on our posts. Wish everyone rock in 2011 with helping each other.
