Amazon Associates For 2011 - Here's How You Dig For Gold Where No One Is Digging...

Yes Amazon Associates is still red hot! Still, 90% of the affiliates are all digging for gold in the same area so I want to share with you what has worked for me as well as others....

Tip #1 - Think Outside The Electronics Box

I know electronics and all of the related niches are sexy and always being advertised but don't overlook the HUGE markets that you can really make a killing at since not many people are going after them....

If you go to Amazon, look at all the non-electronic categories. Check out categories like Sports & Outdoors. That category alone has been money in the bank for me.

Tip #2 - Keywords With Qualifiers Are Still Red Hot

Everyone is focused on obtaining exact match domains for their Amazon sites and yet complaining that here are no good domains for their amazon site because all of the exact domains are taken.

Here's the secret....It is still a walk in the park to go after those category keywords with qualifiers for your domains.

Here are some examples (xxxx=category name)

"best xxxxx"
"xxxx for sale"
"xxxx reviews"
"xxxx guide"

Very often these keywords with qualifiers are getting great monthly volumes. Use Google Adwords Keyword Tool or Market Samurai to double check the volumes but you will see that you can still have the best of both worlds of getting a great domain AND great monthly volume.

Tip #3 - Don't Be Discouraged By Affiliates On Google's First Page...Be Encouraged!

When you research different product categories on Google, you may not realize this but you've struck gold whenever you see another affiliate site on page 1. So often I hear the opposite that it's a lost cause because it's saturated...nonsense!

Google is a big enough pool for all of you to swim in. You should be encouraged by the fact that if a fellow IM'er cracked Page One on Google, you can too!

Plus, if you're astute enough, you can easily reverse engineer that affiliate's playbook and copy the steps to get your site to Page One.

------------------------------------

I wish you all much success with all of you IM endeavors whether it be Amazon Associates or anything else!

Happy New Year!

    Thanks Michael - great post.

I like number 2 - not just that you suggest these words at the beginning or end, but the different words. Most people just go for 'review' and might panic if that's taken, but these other words you mention are just as good.

    Happy New Year Michael

Another quality post from you Michael,

I concur about the Sports and Outdoors section.
I had a crack at exercise equipment and have done really well promoting it.

Another niche that got me over $250 last month was food. lol
People buy lots of food from Amazon especially the gourmet stuff

And for a really good WTF commission, I managed to get a commission for a

Also, you would be surprised how many "affordable" search terms I get

I made from $500-1,000 a month selling vintage postcards on Ebay... I then wrote a manual on how I did it, and sold the manual... never noticed any price changes, or competition.

The Internet is simply too big. And only the smallest percentage of people who learn a money-making method will ever employ it.

Competition, if and when I get any - can only improve my efforts... after all, who's ever seen a single fast-food joint sitting on a street or intersection all by it's lonesome?

        Craig,
Between what you posted and Michael posted there is a lot of quality nuggets for people to get started taskign some action to make income from Amazon products.

Saw another post talking about the use of the word "best" and can definately vouch for the effectiveness of having that word as part of your domain.

I've seen a ton of hubpages on the first page of Google (normally in the top 3) making extensive use of the word "best" followed by the niche.

        Respectfully,

Food? Now this is a real surprise! Would have never thought about that. Probbly because I can not imagine anyone I know wanting to buy foods that need to be send to them.

Might be a cultural thing actually. I live in Europe and over here people are the tactile kind of buyers who want to take the things they buy for dinner into their hands, weigh them, smell them.

This is a great tip though :-) What kind of food do people buy in your experience? Not asking to disclose your niche, just to get a general idea.

        Thanks!

Awesome post and some great information. I have a quick question, I have been doing keyword research for amazon product for days now and have found a couple i might jump on. My question is i have came across many sites at the top of google with the domain bestxxxreviews.com. What is the strategy hear? Use both of those keywords in your domain and focus your on page seo on both best xxx and xxx reviews?

Nice post Michael with some great tips especially tip 3 about the competition. Many people will freak when they see other affiliates on page one. You are correct by saying that there's a huge pool for everybody to swim in. If some affiliate has his site on page one then you know your site can be on page one as well especially if you do your research right, you might discover that it will be quite easy to beat some of these guys for the number one spot.

    Cheers and happy new year!

It's not a disadvantage...I've found that even when I'm on page one and there is another affiliate elsewhere on page one that I still get sales. Do I get all of the sales? Of course not....but I get enough to be very content. As I've said, Google is a big enough pool for plenty of affiliates to swim in.

Also, even if my site's ranked lower on page one than the other affiliate, it still will get sales so don't think that you have to outrank everyone just to get sales.

Searchers on google will check out various search results especially on page one so just get your site on there and wait for the clicks...and sales!

Another tip for finding good Amazon products is to use the Amazon search box and just start typing a letter or two. It usually shows the hottest searches that starts with that letter.

For example if I start typing 'e' it starts suggesting epic mickey, electric blankets ...

make it 'ea' and you'll get easy bake oven, eat pray love .. and so on.

You can often pick up some very cool gems that you might not have thought about

Great tip! Let me add another "outside-the-box" method.....

People who shop on eBay often will shop on Amazon and vice versa. And yet, I've found that many items on EBay Pulse don't make it to the Amazon bestseller list.

Now here's where it gets better.....

I tested a while back 2 items that were high on EBay Pulse and yet was way on the bottom of the Amazon bestseller list for that product's category. So when I promoted the products on my blogs, they did very well...Conversions were very good!

So the key here is that you can find great products that convert well that aren't necessarily on the amazon bestseller list! So don't overlook EBay Pulse!

I'd hate to resurrect this thread but the OP sets up my question perfectly about buyer keywords.

I understand "best xxxx", "xxxx reviews"... are good buyer keywords...

But what about keywords where the searcher is looking for a specific product? For example:

    Hotdog costumes
    Powerful waterguns
    Hats that look like sharks

How well do these types of keywords do for you as far as being a buyer keyword? Would you say similar potential as keywords with "best" or "reviews" in them?

P.S.: I'm not targeting those examples, I just randomly made them up.

      Hi AudioRoxor!

Specific product names are excellent buyer keywords. The trick is to setup your site to go after these keywords as well. What I like to do is first revolve my site around the product category. Then each post is setup around a different specific product.

Now I setup the permalink so the product name is not in the main domain name but just after it...So it would look like:

      http://www.CATEGORY.com/PRODUCTNAME

Setting it up this way helps your product name rank well in Google. Of course, there's lots of other things that you need to do but it is an excellent starting point to rank your product name in Google which is an excellent buyer keyword.

      That's hysterical! Sh*t!, why didn't I think of that?! (pun intended ;-) )

My Amazon sales dried up considerably (OK, COMPLETELY) in June when they shut me and the rest of the California-based sites down.

I signed up with skimlinks to try to salvage those sites, but my click-throughs and conversions have decreased considerably since then - coincidence? It's unclear to me if that's the case...

        Hi Itachi!

I don't recommend ANY trademarked brand names. Product model numbers often fall under that as well.

My recommendation is go after the generic category for your TLD and then go after the brand names on your posts which will then show up on your permalinks (if you set them up correctly!). Now you can go after ranking for you category as well as your product names.

I've not done a ton of business on Amazon (my latest check was $10.42), but what a great way to increase sales! Thanks for the useful post.

Something else that might help people...

Initially I targetd ONLY the more expensive products (those above $200) and I did makle a few sales each month but I never made enough to crank up to the higer percentages (due to increased sales numbers). Finally I got tired of that and thought why not give a few lower priced items a shot. So I targeted popular products in the $10 to $20 range. I made 3 sites for those products, once they were ranking I made enough sales on those products that my total sales numbers increased enough to raise my commision % and my overall profit increased greatly...almost two fold just from selling more of those cheap products.

If you want to raise your %...try promoting a few of the cheaper products.

Great post and I definitely agree about the non-electronic items, as long as they have steady or increasing search trends then they are great product keywords to go after.

I'll throw out a bone to chew on....Two red hot non-electronic items to start your researching on Amazon should be....

      Pet Supplies

      AND

      Outdoor Recreation

PLENTY of low competition areas to go after!

Good point Michael. I read about similar technique in Dan Brock's Deadbeat Affiliate. I will definitely have to take your advice and check these areas out. Thanks a lot for the tip.

No doubt, amazon associate is a great way to make money from but be careful to get a trademark name in your domain. It can get you banned by Amazon.

Absolutely smashing advise, I am sticking with Amazon myself as all the people know it even if they do not know what IM is.

Maybe surprisingly... DVD box sets, right before they come out, are also good to promote with Google Adwords. Include the price in the ad...

This is a very helpful post especially the one you mentioned in tip # 2. Digging for a gold where no one is digging is a good idea any way. Thanks.

Cool tips Michael. Thanks for the post.

    I have one question.

If I have a site with the name xxxxxx.com, do you think it's a good idea to register a domain with the name bestxxxxxx.com and redirect it to my main domain?

Ranking for keywords with modifiers like "on sale," "cheap," and "buy" is a great idea. However, don't be discouraged if the google adwords tool shows a low monthly volume (or none at all). It's notoriously inaccurate, and plus if you can rank for these terms with a product that people are buying, you'll make money even with a low search volume.

    Awesome post Michael!

This thread is from the beginning of the year but I daresay that the points will remain valid forever pretty much!

    I will add one myself:

    * Don't spend TOO much time on research - spend more time DOING!

The more sites you get up and out there and ranked the more money you will make.

Works with Amazon and pretty much any niche or subject too!

Some of my best Amazon niches have nothing to do with electronics. So, I second this vote.

    Hi Michael -

I took your coaching course this summer - have fallen off on my promotion tasks, but am getting back into it now. A quick question about who's ranking on page 1 Google for your keyword. I see that Amazon is rating #1 and then the company's website for the product I'm trying to rank are at #2 and #3. Not the main company page, but category pages that have similar products to the one I'm promoting. Those two pages have a page rank of 3 and 4 respectively. After that, it's a variety of other retailers with 0-3 page ranks.

I've read that seeing Amazon on top is good because those pages are beatable. Just wondering if I can outrank the product company website pages, and if Amazon did it because, well, it's "Amazon".

Thanks so much for your insight, and I really enjoyed the course this summer.
