Using my Paypal account while abroad

I don't think there will be any problem but you must contact paypal to be sure.

I would suggest that you have to contact the Support Desk and open a support ticket with them informing them of your intention so that if they approve it you can use it as an evidence/proof in case they eventually lock your account.

I have nothing to do with PayPal at the moment considering the fact that my country is not listed by them.

I hope experienced folks would help to answer your question better.

I've travelled extensively throughout Asia and have never had a problem. Your PayPal debit card will work fine at any ATM. I always call PayPal customer support ahead of time and ask them to note my account that I will be travelling, otherwise they may place a freeze on your account until you call them to approve transactions.

Many countries have Internet cafes everywhere -- handy if you need Internet access and don't have a notebook or mobile with Internet, but make sure you remember to log out of your account if you use a public computer. You can use a VPN on a public computer for added security.

We've discussed this before on the WF several times. For each person who has had no problems, you'll find someone else who's account was limited.

Actually, we shouldn't really complain because they're doing this to protect our funds.

In my case, they limited my account when I accessed it using a Vodafone broadband dongle while on holiday in Spain a couple of summers ago. I guess their systems spotted my IP address was from a foreign country.

At that time, the only way they were prepared to unlock it was when I could call them from the office number they had on file. So it had to remain locked until I got back.

You definitely need to call them - don't bother emailing.

You should assume that your account will be locked automatically by their systems - what you need to ask them is what they'll need from you with regard to identification while you're away.

I spent 6 months in south east asia last year and did have a few problems but nothing major.

They did keep locking my account but all i had to do was verify who i was with emails an security questions etc. It did get quite tedious but its what has got to be done i suppose.

There was one time when they locked it and made me fax through a copy of my passport etc which was not the easiest of tasks where i was but i managed it in the end.

My bank card got stolen in my last week in bangkok and i was left with no money at all whatsoever. I had my paypal top up card so i loaded that up with £400 but it never went through. I tried phoning them with my last bits of baht but it swallowed all my money so dont put too much trust in your paypal card. it worked for me every time i used it out there apart from the one time when i really needed it.

I honestly thought i was gonna have to beg for food or something but there are so many nice people out there i got by just fine. Thank you to everyone who helped make that week easier for me, not that there ever gonna see this lol.

Cripes! I've never had a problem with this when travelling abroad before to speaking gigs etc. Didn't even know it could be a problem.

Surely if they know you are logging in with your username and password then that is security enough you'd think?

I'm going to spend about 6 months in Australia shortly so I guess I'd better call them and tell them.

Jeez! The things you have to do just to operate without hassle these days.

There is no major issue in using paypal account outside your home country. All the countries you mentioned are listed in paypal list so there will not b problem. if you find any problem in transferring your funds u can simply use paypal help desk.

I've been in the Philippines for over a year now, and never experienced a problem. I did call PayPal before I left for the Philippines, along with calling my banks, and credit card companies.

This is just to insure when they see transactions happening from outside the normal locations it does not raise any red flags.

During 2010 I have been traveling through India, Nepal and Argentina. I have been using my PayPal account all the time, I've even launched a WSO and have had no problem.

I travel overseas quite a bit and haven't had a problem. If you're at all worried, just contact them before you leave like you would a normal credit card company.

Contacting them before you go is good advice. But don't forget their systems may restrict you anyway whatever you're told when you call.

The secret is to get your ducks in line to have it unlocked from wherever you are.

I don't see any problems with all those countries. Because paypal allows all mentioned countries. You better to call Paypal before leaving your country.

Just to clarify a point that's being made here. Your account being restricted for accessing it from abroad has nothing whatsoever to do with those countries being ones from which PayPal will accept customers.

It's about unusual access activity on your account - no more, no less.

I contacted PP support when I went to France for 6 months... they granted my request.. Your account will be locked if you try to use it from different country IP because they think your account is hacked... Contact support even through email..

There are alternative paypal processors to paypal.

The answers in King Shiloh's thread are good too.

Here is a simple solution that will allow you to connect to your paypal account from anywhere in the world remotely and without having to worry about contacting them:

1. Sign up for an account at www.logmein.com - its free and its awesome. I like it better than GoToMyPC. Did I mention it's free?

2. Connect to logmein and connect to your desktop at home. Use the browser on your home desktop to do all your paypal stuff. Because you are doing this you are always accessing it from the home IP address.

Problem solved.

Just don't shut down your home computer and if you do make sure someone has a key so that they can boot it up for you.

I use this method all the time when I travel internationally.

Also if you want an added layer of security sign up for:

LastPass - Password Manager, Form Filler, Password Management which also has a free service but I prefer to sign up for the $12 a year paid service. The reason I sign up for the paid service is so that I can create a USB key for two factor authentication to use on my laptop.

You can use lastpass to login to logmein.com to protect your first set of login credentials. Then you can enter the second key once you get into the console to access your desktop.

I have a paypal account in Thailand and once when I was in India, I had withdrawn money from my paypal account to my bank in Thailand. Paypal had locked my account.

Dont know why they did it..

A few weeks ago, my Australian Paypal account was limited after trying to login from the USA which was a bit strange because I have been traveling back and forth to the States for past 2 years so it was not the first time I was accessing my account overseas. I was requested to do 3 things including changing my password then after a few days it was back to normal.

These security measures are meant to be for your protection. As long as you call in advance and let them know about your general travel plans/itinerary, I don't think you should run into any issues with accessing and using your Paypal account while abroad.

I travel to the Far East extensively and have had problems in the past. This last time, in Japan, they limited my account. Other times, I've been fine. I usually ring them and let them know ahead of time but this time was last minute and I just "hoped" it would be fine due to the frequency of my trips.

Always call ahead and let them know. It'll save headaches later.
