RANT! I can't cancel...

I need to rant.

I'm not going to name names here but I have to get this off my chest.

I have been using a quite well known hosting company for a few of my websites. For the first few months everything was fine. So good that I started to recommend their services.

Anyway, I have managed to earn a recurring commission of around $150 per month, nothing to scream about but still it's recurring income that I get for doing nothing.

Here's where it turns ugly.

Over the last few weeks I have had nothing but problems, websites loading slow, going down and so on. It wasn't the first time this happened so I decided to move to a more reliable host.

So far so good you may think.

Well it was, till I went to cancel my original hosting account. I just happened to mention the affiliate commissions I am earning and asked if I would still receive these commissions.

Here's the reply I received.

"Canceling terminates access to the members (affiliate) area and any accumulated commissions are forfeited. Please let me know to go ahead and cancel your account.
Thank you and have a great day"

You have to love the "Thank you and have a great day" part don't you?

So I have a $45 per month hosting package that I can't cancel because if I do I lose my $150 per month commissions.

AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

I'm in the process of doing that now. But that's not the issue. The issue is the way I am trapped. It's probably in the small print somewhere but I still think it sucks.

Keep the package and don't use it! You're still $100+ dollars a month better off.

$150 is more than the $45 so you make $105 per month. However they might also have a problem, and maybe you should ask you referrals to move too!

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

I think they are IF they allow only active users to be affiliates.

Alternative - maybe you can downgrade the account to their cheapest package, at least until you get paid.

I know exactly who you mean and I will be cancelling as soon as I can get my sites off there. It is not easy getting a backup under these circumstances but I moved one yesterday and may just have to rely on week-old backups for others.

If things carry on like this you will see your affiliate commissions dwindle to the point where you can happily cancel anyway. Although 'happily' is perhaps not the best word ...

Advice to anyone looking for hosting:

    1. Have accounts with two different companies so you can set up products elsewhere and/or quickly move a site to hosting that works

    2. Keep your own backups on your own computer and take them at least once a week plus any time you have done major work on a site. I use CP Site Saver to download them automatically but you could do it manually if you don't have many sites.

    It's still a nightmare moving though :-(

I had such problems before - had my sites off for 3 days, however, the host compensated tremendously for that, and therefore I am sticking with them, since I hope they learned out of the experience.

However I have decided to do daily backups to a different server that does only this. I think they are called bqbackup. Works great, and I can very quickly move all my sites (about 5Gig - I think) of info in less than an hour to a new site.

I backup everything - even the emails... - I don't take any more chances hey!

    Hi John,

    This is really not right.

I think you need to let them know your displeasure.

    I feel for you.

...and the small print? Go back and check it! What does it really say?

    Cheerio

    Hi John -

I've always seen you as a aboveboard kind of person of honest principle. I can see where this would bother you even beyond the money.
