Oh God! Virus!! HELP!

Ok I'm trying to stay very calm.

I seem to have gotten a virus on my brand new lap top.

Well, my husband says it's spyware, and not a virus because it's blocking me from going to any web page unless I buy their software.

It also removed Norton.

Has anyone had this happen?

Is there a fix?

We've tried downloading AVG by file transferring through Skype, but it's blocking it.

Download System Mechanic's trial version and run it. It works great, will remove viruses
and will speed up your computer.

TY, but it's blocking me from going to any website. There is no way to download anything to it at the moment.

Danielle, you may want to try renaming the files before transferring. It sounds like a virus, a very intelligent one. These things are designed to anticipate your every move; i.e., it knows you want to install anti virus, and it will block you at every turn, one hurdle after another.

I'm not very technical -- if i were in your shoes I think I'd return it to the vendor and demand they replace it, or at least fix it. May be a less stressful course. A reformat may do the trick, but a clean wipe may even be required, who knows?

Maybe someone else has experienced this or can suggest something.

I keep everything in the cloud or an external drive (mostly cloud). Then I just reinstall the operating system every so often. You never can be sure. Many people are infected and don't even know it.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Do you have access to another PC?

      Download AVG's Bootable Virus remover.

AVG - Rescue CD | PC Rescue and Repair Toolkit

      Burn a CD.

Boot it from the infected PC and run the Virus software.

Start your computer in 'Safe Mode'...then download Malware Bytes AntiMalware program. Run full scan and follow the prompts.

You may also try Spybot (also safe mode) and run scan also. It may be that you will need to run full scan two or three times, but you should be able to get rid of it.

Whoops..forgot to add my vote for Avast. Malware Bytes, SpyBot and Avast and you should be able to get yourself back into operation.

WOW! Thanks everyone. My hubby did a full system restore (back to factory settings), and that appears to have fixed it.

I lost the stuff I'd put on it like FF, Skype, etc, but nothing I can't recover. I've only had the thing 3 days, LOL, so luckily, I hadn't put a whole lot of stuff on it as of yet, so it's all good.

The problem now seems to be that we can't put an anti-virus on here because of some kind of 'remote lojacking system' thing the store put on it.

So I may just be returning this thing tomorrow anyway.

          Thanks everyone! Warriors rock!

I had Softeo virus not so long ago and Avast kicked its butt out. The trial gives you 30-days lots of time to get upgraded later.

I just read the other thread. It sounds almost exactly the same, only with mine it was just websites it wouldn't let me go to. I think. I was able to open Skype and I was chatting on the browser version of Y msgr when it happened and neither of those were affected at all. I don't think I tried to open any other files though.

Now I'm scared it's not gone, but the machine is going back and they are either removing their lojack s**t or I'm going somewhere else. So I'm stuck back on the old dinosaur again tonight. oh well, at least I'm online, right?

If all antivirus and malware removal tools fail, then you have no choice but to reinstall your OS. Make sure to back up your important files first.
