Clickable Links in Youtube Videos [FREE Tutorial]

by WillR

Warriors,

There has been a lot of interest in this method of late. YES, you can actually get clickable links working in your own Youtube videos in as little as 5 minutes - and for FREE!

Rather than try and respond to everyone via PM personally, I have decided to post this tutorial video that shows you exactly how to get these clickable links working in your own youtube videos right away.

Note: This video is NOT my own but it outlines the exact method I use to get these ads working. So rather than re-invent the wheel I have decided to post this video tutorial rather than create my own.

I hope you find it useful!

so to clarify, the act of pausing the promotion still allows the call to action to appear without you being billed for every view or clickthrough?

NO, you are not charged for anyone who clicks on the link in your ad. You will only be charged for people who click on your promoted video but since you are pausing that campaign, your video will not be promoted so you won't/can't be charged anything.

What a lot of people don't realize is that you can have these ads on your own videos, but Youtube will only give you the option to create them if you have created a promoted video campaign for that video. So you need to create that campaign first which then gives you the option to create your overlay ads, then simply pause that campaign and the overlay will remain on your video.

Obviously Youtube think that by allowing you to put these clickable overlay ads over your videos it will make you more likely to want to advertise your videos. But if you are already getting enough clicks by yourself just pause the campaign and leave the free clickable overlays on your videos.

Interesting, so even if you were to promote it, your CPC would be very low nice alternative to static advertising, thanks for that, I think I can make use of that plan for a number of client accounts.

I don't see why as you are not doing anything below board. You are setting up a campaign and then simply pausing it - you are not asking them to keep showing the overlay ads - it just happens.

For those of you who may be really worried about this causing any problems with your account, just setup your daily budget as 1 cent and then your CPC as 1 cent and don't pause the campaign. That way the most you could ever get charged per day is only 1 cent anyway and your campaign is always running.

just signed up here after reading about the clickthru linking on youtube and this is a huge help but just one question for clarification.....after watching the posted vid above, and going to ads website to set it up....I need to fill out credit card info and there is a $5 fee for set up.....is this correct and I need to do this before I can proceed?

Yes, you need to pay the one time $5 fee and submit your credit card info to get started. You also should have a decent destination for your user, send them somewhere that would interest them.

This would be a good time to dig out that adwords coupon that you didn't know what to do with.

Exactly - although these ads won't cost you anything so you won't really need much of the coupon!

Good tip- It's been mentioned before, but you need a good non-spammy site at the end of your link- or the youtube police might slap you. I've stayed with capture pages offering something for free, and then linking to a sales page after opt-in.

I am trying to understand why the click-through link works while the campaign is in paused mode. Very puzzling. I can't believe this is a Google error or loophole. Here is a possibility:

The charge only occurs when your ad appears on another person's video (put there via the keywords you filled out). This is similar to the way regular AdWords works. In this case, there is no charge if the click-through is from your own video page.

If someone can figure this out, I would appreciate letting us know. I, too, don't want to get slapped by Google!

The campaign you are creating has nothing to do with these ads. The campaign you are creating is a 'Promoted Video' campaign to show your videos down the right hand side of Youtube as a promoted video. Once you create a campaign for promoted videos, Youtube then enables this Overlay ad feature because you are an advertiser with them. So when you pause the campaign your video will not show as a promoted video and thus you won't get charged, but the overlay ads will still be on your video.

Just to add...it costs nothing if you already have an Adwords account. No activation fee. But your YouTube channel needs to be set up with the email account you are using for Adwords.

After spending hours trying to figure out how to do this, I ran across this tutorial vid. I gave it a test drive and it WORKS! I was amazed to see you can even post links to sites outside of Youtube..ha!

If this isn't a true loophole, don't know what is!

Since I am a marketer and have endured some harsh G-slaps, I'm testing this with a 'no-sales' promoted video, and then forwarding to a different video with a very 'low key' sales message.

Thanks for the 'Video Marketing' tip of the Year!

When you create your promotion, we ask you for the maximum amount you're willing to pay each time a user views your promotion. (Another term we use for this is a "bid.")"
So how come I am still using it to this day? CPC is basically just another way of saying CPV. So long as you set your budget as shown in the tutorial it does not matter whether it's CPC or CPV - either way they can't charge you more than your budget.

Thanks for sharing this Will - a simple little way that will increase your clicks by shed-loads. Some people are very impulsive and won't look below the video to see the http:// url so having the overlay is great way of putting your site in their direct line of sight.

    Hi,

video marketing it is hearing great.
But how to monetize this youtube traffic?

    1. Does these overlay ads works great with direct link to your money (affiliate) site? Also are tube traffic is in buyer or pre buy mode?

    2. Or works only with link to your squeeze page to build a list? Pre buy mode?

To Nr.1: what is a realistic ctr on these overlay ads who are direct link to my money site? 1%,2% far more?

Nr 2: Or does tube traffic only convert and make money with build a list not direct link to a money site? (many says cb doe snot works on youtube-why???)
