Can You over Monetize a Page

Hi all I am relatively new to IM. I have a few sites up selling Amazon products and using Adsense ads.
Having no joy with Amazon and only getting the odd click through on Adsense.
As I have one adsense ad and several links to the amazon page my query is would I be better off with sticking to one monetizing method per page. Thanks for your input

In answer to your question, yes, you can try to over-monetize a page. That occurs when the content of the page gets lost in between the ads. The content of the page is the most important part - it's what people have come to your site to read. If they can't easily access that information without being bombarded by ads then they will click elsewhere.

Make your content the focus of the page and use strategically placed ads both around and inside your content for best results.

Here's an example of the kind of thing I am talking about:
Top 5 Ways To Make Money Online

I only use that example because I know that site makes something ridiculous like a few hundred thousand dollars per month just from their ads alone. I'm sure coming up number 1 for the phrase 'make money online' doesn't hurt them!

Definitively a good example how to over-monetize a page, without having your content buried. I'll take some ideas for the page I want to monetize for the Spanish Market.

      Thanks a lot, WillR

    1. Forget Adsense if you are expecting to make any kind of decent money. Yes, you can make money from Adsense but you would need a LOT of traffic to make adsense worthwhile.

    2. What niche are you in? Amazon won't work as well in every niche. It also depends what stage of the buying cycle people are in when they hit your site. Are they simply searching for more information or are they in buying mode? Your website stats will show you the types of phrases they are searching to get to your site.

Yes, they sound like the kind of people you want. The site actually doesn't look too bad to me. It has a good mix of content/ads. I would probably test a few different things with your adsense ads if you want to keep them.

        1. Test leaving them as they are but wrapping the article/review text around the ads so they don't stand out so much as ads.

        2. Try a horizontal block of ads that go across the page as opposed to down the page. Try and get an ad block that is as close to the width of the rest of the article so once again, the ads kind of blend in to the page content.

        3. You could try a block of adsense link ads right at the top under article title. That way they look like links to other pages on your site so people are more likely to click on them.

Here's a few other things I would try without Adsense ads...

        1. I would move the image of the headphones much further up the page. People love to click on images so I would move the image up to where the adsense ads are and wrap the article text around the image. I would then hyperlink it so that when someone clicks on that image they are taken to the Amazon product page. The other reason I would put the image higher up the page is so that people landing on your page can immediately see the page is about the product they are looking for.

        2. I would also have a big blue link below that image that doesn't say 'Sennheiser PXC 350 Available Here' but something a little more click-worthy such as 'Click Here for the best price on Sennheiser PXC 350' or 'Sennheiser PXC 350 best price today'.

        3. Even if you add these things further up the page I would still have them at the bottom of the page as well. You want to cater to both types of people. Those who just read a little bit of your page and those who read all the way to the bottom of the page.

        4. The title of the page and the title of the article should have the model number in it. Instead of just having 'Noise Reduction Headphones' it should say something like 'Sennheiser PXC 350 Noise Reduction Headphones' or 'Review of Sennheiser PXC 350 Headphones'. You should have a new page for each different model number you are promoting. This will also help your SEO efforts and hopefully get you much more targeted and higher converting traffic.

Some marketers get so involved on trying to sell things that they forget the reason why a visitor is on their site.

They could be on the "buying" mode, but people usually don't want to be sold, they want to satisfy a need.

If a site is more ads than content, or ads are not much related with what they were looking for, you have lost a sale.

Other times sites are confusing. I have been in sites that I don't know where to find what I was looking for, I did a google search, clicked the link and was presented with something even not related to my keyword search.

Some marketers have lost a sale because I didn't know what to do there.

Make your sites newbie user friendly even with adsense or amazon.

          Sincerely,

          Antonios

You can certainly over monetize a page. It's not always easy to define, and depends on what your goals are.

If you want repeat visitors, you will want fewer ads and to give people reasons to keep coming back, such as a newsletter to sign up for or an RSS feed.

If you're trying for sales, you may have more of an emphasis on the products you're trying to sell. What else is a product review with an affiliate link but an ad?

In either case, you don't want so many ads that you chase people off through the back button. If you're trying to earn money, you need to place your ads so that people click them, ideally after any other actions you'd like them to take, such as subscribing.

Do some experimenting. Move your ads around and change the types. See what works for you.

Of course, until you have good, relevant traffic, there's only so much income to be earned anyhow.

Absolutely you can over monetize a page.

Remember, the key is maximizing the longterm value of a prospect/customer/visitor. You can over monetize early on in the relationship or funnel and sacrifice long term sales potential for sure.

Lot's of people over monetize too quickly...either on a page or just more generally in a relationship!

Agree with WILLR. I think he has done a great job in his suggestions. They are great and definitely should be tested out. At the end of the day, all experiences are part of the learning even if they don't earn us any money.

    Keep the momentum going!
