    No they are not

Use them at your own risk

You would be better off paying a dollar or so and getting some royalty free images from i-stock photo or someone

You can of course find an image on Google and track its owner down fairly easily and ask for permission to use it, which would seem the simplest option.

Depending on what you want to use it for they may want payment or just be happy with the image linked back to their site from yours.

Worst case they can say no. Asking the questions costs nothing though.

But please remember: Google images are NOT free and you cannot use them without permission!

For free images go to Free Photos - Free Images - Royalty Free Photos - Free Stock Photos - FreeDigitalPhotos.net
and do a search for specific areas of interest.

The site at sxc dot hu has free photos. They are now run by Getty images and they are a part of istock photos but you don't have to pay to use the images.

It seems to me that its kind of like the free part of istock, and many of the images leave a bit to be desired. they are all not so clean and neat as istok but some are pretty good.

Me personally I would rather pay a buck or two and get the EXACT image I am looking for and not have to worry about getting sued later down the road

I see that the question has already been answered, but this will be for the benefit of people who will skim this thread later...

          NO!

GOOGLE IMAGES ARE NOT ROYALTY-FREE IMAGES.

GOOGLE IMAGES ARE NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN IMAGES.

YOU CAN NOT JUST TAKE THEM AND USE THEM.

Hopefully, that'll help. Probably not, but we can keep our fingers crossed.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Here is another post going into more details of what can happen if you use images you do not have the right to use:

The creator of an photograph is automatically granted copyright of his/her creation. (If a photographer has taken a photo on commission then he/she may have passed the copyright to whoever commissioned the work).

Google images are simply photos and other graphic files that Google has taken from web pages that it has indexed and which match your search. You should NOT just copy and use an image without seeking the copyright holder's permission and if you can't find out who the copyright holder is you should not use the image.

There are many images that are in the Public Domain and can be freely used but the onus is on you to make sure they are in the Public Domain. Just do a search for something like "public domain images of (insert the subject of the picture you are looking for).

The quickest way to get an image to suit the purpose that you want is to browse the hundreds of stock photo websites. Just serch for royalty free photos and you will be spoilt for choice.

Yes. I'm a professional photographer, and as soon as the photographer pushes the shutter button that image is copyrighted by it's creator. Even when prints are sold to a client, the photographer maintains copyright unless he specifically releases those rights.

That being said, there are some very good amateur photographers that would be honored that someone would want to use their pictures and let you do it for free. But you have to ask.

I would not reccomend searching for images on google... Just search for a free photo site that allow you to use their images for commercial and personal use.. There are hundreds of them!!
