Forum Marketing Question

This is my first post, so I'll introduce myself. I'm Spiritnova, nice to meet you. Anyways, I've been reading up on becoming an affiliate/internet/whathaveyou marketer for a little over a month now, and now I'm starting to act on what I've read.

The first thing I want to try is forum marketing because forums are something I'm comfortable with. However, I intend to start a blog dedicated to informing people of ways to make money online. Obviously this blog will have refferal and affiliate links in it. I'll start off with free methods and work my way up.

For the moment I'm looking into forums about internet marketing, making money, etc. So here's my question: should I focus my signature on promoting a specific product/service I have in mind, or should I focus on linking to the blog which will have multiple links to follow(including the other link)? Do they even need to be mutually exclusive?

I should mention that I intend to start a twitter account as well to promote the blog, and maybe some other links.

Any help is appreciated,

Spiritnova

Forum Marketing is a very lucrative approach, IF you use it properly.

Join the forums, read what others are saying, ask intelligent questions and offer useful advice where you can. By the time you get enough posts to add your own signature link you'll know what is and isn't both appropriate and effective.

Hello and welcome. You'll need to check the rules of the forums you plan on contributing to. Some specifically state that you can not post links to products in your signature while others DO allow you to place links to a blog. The rules of the forum will dictate what you are able to do.

If I found a forum where either link would be fine, would it be better to focus on one over the other, or just have both?

    Test, Test, Test

Try one for a while and then the other. And No, no reason for them to be mutually exclusive.

This is just food for thought...

If you have the ability to go into other markets where you have some experience and something to offer that is based on personal experience or education, you may find that easier than getting into a brand new field where all your knowledge is "hearsay".

The MMO niche is getting very saturated with folks who have no experience yet think they can make money in it. So the failure rate is huge.

Yet those who try to make money online using niches outside of IM have less competition, sometimes a far bigger audience, and find it more profitable for the time and energy invested.

You don't hear a lot about that on forums dedicated to MMO because those folks are out there actually making money as opposed to preaching to the choir.

A lot of us here were making money on the net before we found this forum. There are plenty of folks who make money on the net that have never heard of MMO forums. The point I'm trying to make is that just because you discovered there is a possible way to make money selling into the MMO niche don't think that is the only niche were that can happen.

I like that you are starting a blog. Doing so allows your targeted readers to feel out your online personality. In addition, you'll also get to potentially generate online ad revenue, while building your business online, and promote other products and services through your blog. If you need any help, please let me know how I may be of service to you.

      Hi Spiritnova,

Good choice of post for your first one, and in doing so you must have done some research, as yes forums can make you very good money, but they require a huge amount of work to get off the ground.

It is very easy to set up a forum, but if people visit it and it has virtually zero posts then your sign ups will be very low.

That said if you believe in what you are doing you can make a good forum work well.

But be aware that in the first couple of years (not months) you will be working at it 24/7.

That said if you can stick it out and get noticed then you can make serious money from a forum – list building?

      Your forum is your list!

I mean this question with absolutely no hostility or criticism at all, but why on earth do you want to start by advising other people about something of which you have no experience yourself, in the single most competitive niche there is?

I cordially invite you to read Bill Farnham's post above really slowly and carefully. And then to read it again. And I wish you well.

      Hi and welcome!

As the previous people replying to your question said you just have to check the forum rules and most of all don't be blatant about promoting your blog.

On a different note tho... if you didn't make money online yet why do you think you can teach others how to? Yeah, you could try the "challenge" kinda blog where you let your readers now upfront that you're just as new at all this as they are so they get interested in seeing how YOU can do it, but other than that i dunno... i wouldn't do it if I were you...

Why not start a blog on a different topic, less competitive? Have a cat? Blog about it and promote a cat related product! Have children? Blog about it and promote a children related product. Have parrots? well... you get the idea

      Hope this helps

      Thanks,
      Alex

Check the forum rules. Most let you have 4-5 lines allowing you to have more then 1 link you can put both.

@Bill- MMO isn't the only thing I'll be focusing on. I also have some niche products from clickbank I intend to try to promote. I've been doing my research and I'm well aware of other oppurtunities. This is just what I intend to try to start with. It may not work, and I'm ok with that, but I'm still going to try.

@Devid- I think you got confused... I intend to join forum communities and promote links in my signature. I'm not setting up a forum myself.

@Alexa- The main reason I intend to go with that topic is because it's the only thing I could think of that I'd be able to produce consistant posts. The main point of the blog will be to chronicle my journey of making money online. It's not meant to be a 'how to' so much as a 'here's what's out there'. Besides, it's not the only thing I'll be focusing on. I have other niches I'm going to try to promote.

@Josh- It wasn't so much a question of 'can I' as "should I'. All I wanted to know was whether having both would be good or bad for clickthrough. After looking around and seeing alot of people with multiple links, I'd assume it's fine.

@Alex- I wouldn't be teaching them how, I'd be showing them possibilities. I tried to think of something else to work with, but I just don't have enough material to work with in another niche.

Before you decide on your sig file, at least for this forum, you may want to read the first post in this thread:

Thanks for the warning, but I didn't really intend to promote on this forum. At least not yet. I was only going to use it to get advice.

Besides, I already read it before posting anything.
