Directory Pages

What are the pros and cons to back-linking through directory pages. Are they worth while? Many seem that you can easily get on them, Matt Cutts says this will diminish there help in back linking. And the paid one are just buying a back link, to me this seems a spider can easily detect this type of situation. Especially if you are using Google analytics and webmaster tools.

Ive been reading the forums and have yet to get a clear answer.

    What do you mean by directory pages - are you referring to article directories? Or things like "Scrub The Web" and things of that nature?

    The value of a link is generally inversely proportioned to how easily it can be obtained, al those methods spammed by robots have low value. You can find services, often using automation, that will make 100 free director submissions for something like $5.

    Some advise only bothering with a few premium directories, that generally cost money, Yahoo @ $299/yr, Best of Web $100? a year, or DMOZ, free but don't hold your breath while waiting to be accepted.

    This is certainly a topic of interest to me. Google has repeatedly said that link directories are okay if certain criteria are true. Both small and large directories can be beneficial. I wrote something a while back on the subject if it interest you. You still have to use your best judgment and don't just pay someone to submit to 1000 directories. Rather, submit yourself, and carefully write your title and description according to the guidelines of the directory, and choose the proper category.
