Converting Ecommerce website into Wordpress

Hey guys I've ran a pretty successful ecommerce site for about 2 years now and just began to really appreciate the beauty of Wordpress (thanks to Keith Koganes awesome automated blog ideas)

However, it's kind of a pain in the ass to update and maintain a static website unless you are using a CMS like joomla or zencart which I am not because they are kinda confusing.

Anyways...I've got several good page rankings w/ google so it's important that I keep the URL's intact. Is there anyway to do that and if so..how do you do it.

Also...what is everyones experience with the WP E-commerce plugin "instinct"

thanks,
jason

I've used the WP Ecommerce plugin and it's great - for a free one. It has several payment processing option as well as some paid plugins to enhance functionalities.

You can maintain your page rank by doing a 301 redirect to the new pages or if you don't have too many pages, by maintaining the same url string.

when you say "maintain the same url string" how would you do that?

      like my site is...

      sportsequipment.com/footballs

how would i just keep it the same...because doesn't a 301 redirect take a few seconds to load?

I just did this for client who moved from HTML pages to Wordpress.

301 htaccess redirects will redirect the old page to a new one (regardless of url string) and retain your rankings in Google (to a degree). Naturally, Google will review the new page and give it ranking according to it's new properties, tags, title, etc. But the link will be preserved in Google's index and updated with the new URL.

301 htaccess redirects can be done in Cpanel using the link called "Redirects". It's done on a link-by-link basis. ie one by one.

I've used MarketTheme and found it very robust. I'll check out the plugin mentioned.

Like BlueSqaures mentioned above, 301 redirects are in htaccess and are transparent to the visitor.

Why don't you just add a WP blog to your ECommerce site. You could add it as a sub directory or put it on a subdomain. Then you could use the blog for what blogs are designed to do. e.g. site news updates, new products, etc.
